There is not a Saturday Night Live performance on the Video Compilation, but...ROBYN WAS ON SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE?? How could this escape me? Ever since his first letterman appearance I've tried to pay close attention to the SNL musical guests whenever Robyn was touring to support a new album. I thought that show would be perfect for him, but I never heard of any appearance. Details? -russ. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Feb 96 09:53:00 -0800 From: Russ Reynolds Subject: It's a Raymond Hitchcock Evening Forgive me if this exact same info was posted by someone else recently, but I came across a copy of "Attack The Lusitania!" by Raymond Hitchcock. Note about the author sez: Raymond Hitchcock has written several TV plays, and articles for magazines as diverse as *Penthouse* and *World Medicine*. He is arried with three children, and lives in a converted water-mill whose origins he has traced back to AD 961. In the photo he looks (oddly enough) like a younger version of the guy on the "I Something You" single. The book was published in 1979--which means that one of his three children had already released A Can Of Bees--and it's dedicated to Lal and Fleur. Lal, I believe is Robyn's sister (right?) and is the person responsible for those attractive models on the Underwater Moonlight cover. I'm guessing Fleur is his other sister, but I'm only guessing. -russ. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Feb 96 10:06:00 -0800 From: Russ Reynolds Subject: Electric Trains I had a thought that it might be interesting to hear IODOT rerecorded as an electric album. Then, as soon as I realized that would really be kind of a stupid project for Robyn, another, slightly better thought entered my brane...What if Robyn released two versions of his new album: one entirely acoustic (Eyesque) and the other with drums, electric guitars, backing vocals, the works? This would be an innovative undertaking for any artist, as well as an attention getting gimmick, and who needs a good dose of attention more than RH? He's already released accoustic & electric versions of the same song simultaneously (Globe Of Frogs)--why not an entire album? I'm sure we'd all buy both versions and each of us would surely be very happy with at least one of them. -russ. ------------------------------ From: LORDK@FLP.LIB.PA.US Date: Mon, 5 Feb 1996 13:51:24 -0500 (EST) CC: LORDK@FLP.LIB.PA.US Subject: Magmificence O.K., my humble b.s. on the attractiveness issue. No Kirk-like bimbo he, which is the point. My husband has alsways thought I was a moran for entertaining notions as to our heros gayness-- He's not immaculate enough-- . He's never tried to sell himself as a sex-symbol. Look at some of those bad haircuts, occasionally ill-fitting outfits, grey he refuses to hide with any sort of consistency. the guy is rather obviously-- just a guy. Agood solid B is how I put it. If you want to go for him theres enough there to fuel desire, but hes not such a babe that you have no choice in the matter. He's attractive enough to get the job done, but not so attractive as to be a menace. For me, its the voice. The flatness, the harshness, the gentleness, the snideness, the sweetness, the meanness, the shyness, the bitterness--but most of all--the sensuality of it. He packs alot into it, multiverses of ambiguities, and each one makes sense to me. The first album I ever heard of his was Grovvy Decay(not one of my favorites)--and even thou i didnt even like some of the songs, it still felt that that voice was talking to ME, was sitting right there in my living-room, cutting thru all my bullshit, and talking to ME. And it was a voice I knew, some long lost childhood friend, who couldnt abide all my usual nonsenses, refused to even deal with them. Who reached right past them to remind me of who i really was, what I really was. And who streanthened that part of me so that i could, for at least a moment, shed some of that nonsenses, and walk as myself back into the world. And just for the record, guys, thats sexy. thats alot sexier than great pecs or perfect bone structure. And Robyn can be as much of an asshole in real life as he wants, he's earned it. Kay, the life is more senseous than most of us can really deal with Cap. Terry--most people are really sexy if you just zone in on the right frequency. My guess is, you're really sexy yourself-- you just not confident of it yet. And what makes you think Robyn's harem would ONLY be interested in Robyn. I mean, what would all of us randy females do when he got a cold.? Perchance the harem would need a harem of its own. The Loire valley really is very nice. I seem to recall an interview a few years ago where Robyn said that he was recording a song for an Incredible String Band tribute album. Does anyone know if this ever came out? The list of covers from last week had a few of their songs on it (China White, Hedgehog Song) but I wondered if this ever made it to plastic. (BTW, if you've never heard them, they were an extremely strange hippy folk world music type of group from the late sixties). There was also supposed to be a Nick Drake tribute, did this ever come out? (Not sure if Robyn was on this one)... Since Robyn probably won't be too keen on it, how about *WE* put out an electric version of his next album. Maybe do something like reissue all of his albums with reverse polarity (BSDR, Respect and Fegmania acoustic, electric Eye, IODOT and Surfer Ghost..) Or is that just too silly an idea for the list? I'm guessing >Fleur is his other sister, but I'm only guessing. As far as Fleur goes, this is the case. My friend at work went to grade school with her. Someone posted recently on an article that is on the web where Robyn talks about his family. URL address is: http://k12.cnidr.org:90/hitchcock.html Here are the bits specifically about his family: a+p: Your father was a writer, wasn't he? RH: Yes, among many other remarkable talents. a+p: Did his talents rub off on anyone else in the family? RH: Lal, my younger sister -- as opposed to my youngest; that would be Fleur -- is quite an artist. She builds totem poles. Really great ones, too. She's made a few chairs that instead of having a leather or wood seat, they have grass. But the woman who was exhibiting the pieces thought the grass was too long, so she trimmed them to her liking. From my sister's point of view, it's not unlike tweaking the eyelashes of her Mona Lisa. Then again, maybe that might be sort of an extreme parallel. a+p: Well, I kinda liked it. RH: Hmm. She also makes these wonderful lampshade, with heads that are enormous flowers of wires and papier mache. Now she's making a railway station of my family waving goodbye to my father on his death train. My youngest sister, Fleur, writes books. So I supposed my father's creativity ran rampant through the family. a+p: You must have had a rather strange childhood surrounded by people dripping with inspiration. RH: We weren't that strange of a family. We went to the bathroom, wore shoes and the like. Lal and I were encouraged to do our things, while my youngest sister wrote novels, something which we could never do. We were a very unathletic family. Our idea of afternoon sport was to stand around and throw balls over our shoulders. We were a very unphysical family -- I think I gave my youngest sister her first hug when she was 28. I supposed we preferred existing from the neck upwards, disembodied yapping heads saturated with intense thought. Well, I like your idea of acoustic *and* electric versions of albums (and of course I'd buy both versions, because, hey, I'm a rabid collector), but some of Robyn's songs don't work both ways, I think. Take "Falling Leaves" for instance. I his playing it with a band and electric instruments makes it, well, not too good. Way, way too much echo on the drums, if you ask me. I think it would have worked *much* better if he'd recorded it in the IODOT fashion: him, acoustic guitar with metal strings, and some naff harmonica. Or mebbe nylon strings with piano harmonies. Yeah, sure, Globe of Frogs works great in either setting. I've also loved Robyn's recent acousticifications of Soft Boys toons, esp. "Only The Stones" and "Wey Wey Hep Uh Hoe." But I doubt "Messages of Dark" or "Mr. Deadly" would survive the Rock Band thing. +++++++++++++++++++++++ Internet Product Specialist Gene Hopstetter, Jr. + Cadmus Digital Solutions +++++++++++++++++++++++ http://www.cadmus.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Feb 1996 13:14:32 -0800 From: librik@netcom.com (David Librik) Subject: Re: Electric Trains Russ Reynolds writes: > Then, as soon as I realized that would really be kind of a >stupid project for Robyn, another, slightly better thought entered my >brane...What if Robyn released two versions of his new album: one entirely >acoustic (Eyesque) and the other with drums, electric guitars, backing >vocals, the works? Actually, I could imagine Robyn doing this. We know he finds the existence of this Fegmaniax list uncomfortable. I can't think of any ploy more carefully and brilliantly calculated to tear the list apart with flamewars -- surely such conflicts as RESPECT VS. EYE! and SOLO VS. EGYPTIANS! would be dwarfed in comparison to the immediate chaos engendered by ELECTRIC VERSION VS. ACOUSTIC VERSION! of the same album. The old "well, they're two different records, so they're both good" line wouldn't work. We'd realize we all really have nothing in common and would stomp off, mutually grumbling, never to dissect Robyn's personal life again. - David Librik librik@cs.berkeley.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Feb 1996 16:15:28 -0500 (EST) From: Jennifer Cynthia Waits Subject: Re: Robyn the magnificent On Mon, 5 Feb 1996 gene@cadmus.com wrote: > > On Sun, 4 Feb 1996 22:53:00 -0500 (EST) Terry Marks wrote: > > >Hmm...this thread went a lot longer than the thread about going out with > >Maisie Hitchcock. Russ responds: I'm talking about an entire album of new material, two different versions of the same album being released simultaneously. Same songs, same order, one electric album, one acoustic album. The innovation comes not from doing different versions of the same song, but from offering different versions of the same ALBUM. Has that been done before? And given the current climate for acoustic records (thanks to "Unplugged") this would seem to be a good time for someone to try it.
