I was only going to say that "physical attraction" is about a hell of a lot more than just "being tall", and I am not even sure you can separate physical attraction from other, (apparently more valid) types of attraction anyway.( My husband, to whom I am attracted in every way, has been mistaken for Brad Pitt on his trips to LA. I do not find BP attractive in any way, however!) One of the first things that attracted me to Robyn was his voice. Then, I saw him live, and noticed how long his fingers were... It is a very fully-involved fantasy. I guess I am in the Spock camp too, but what do I know, I think Nick Cave is pretty cool, and the fact that I tower over Iggy (and I am a shrimp) is of no consequence, really. I get the feeling (perhaps falsely) that the males on the list don't like to consider the fact that the females (and perhaps some of the gay males) may be attracted to Robyn and that is part of the appeal. Does this diminish him in some way? Does it diminish us? I am sure you will let me know what you think ; ) ! Comments? here's my take on the physical attraction part: for someone to meet him in the first place, he or she'd almost always have to be either a fan or a journalist. so unless it's a chance meeting, the physical attraction factor isn't going to play a role in getting him more fans (or a harem, or...) and those photos in albums and magazines aren't particularly flattering or clear (i.e., mostly blurry), either. don't get me wrong -- i'm not suggesting that he's grotesque, and his height is definitely to his advantage, imho. but i maintain that it's his words/narratives and music that get him the hoards of (screaming female, male, fill in the blank) fans. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Feb 96 22:18:36 CST From: Truman Peyote Subject: harems, tabs, translations Still suffering from a suckerpunch! (should have known that Bruford thing was too good to be true, glad I'm a procrastinator by nature and kept forgetting to ask for a copy). Of course you could bring your girlfriend, your powerbook, and any other tools you might want to the chateau. It's not fair to demand that all the other men remain celibate during their stay. That includes you too, Terry :). Thanks for reminding me about the translation, I had plum forgotten. (Covering all bases here) As for the attraction thing......well, yah, I'd say it would probably be Mr. Robyn's musical and intellectual gifts that make one swoony rather than his physical appearance......although I do like them tall and weedy-looking and those dark eyes don't hurt. And being a gittar player myself may or may not have something to do with my admiration for the way he manipulates the instrument and the fact that I find it farily sexy :). Susan next time you get into me, I swear to God you won't get out again :) ------------------------------ Date: 2 Feb 1996 17:00:18 -0800 From: "Mark Gloster" Subject: Re: harems, tabs, and opini Reply to: RE>>harems, tabs, and opinions (robyn's) I read an interview about a year ago in Dirty Linen wherein Robyn said his favorite RH album was Queen Elvis. It could be that like me, his attachments change with wind direction. I am lasing (verbing a word here) Eye somewhat these days while people take whacks at it. Next week it could easily GOF or QE or IODOT. And it seems that whatever I am listening to is my favorite, except a couple of his albums which I also like. Robyn seemed to get down on fegmaniax after the previous songbashing thread we had. I think he acted like we didn't exist until the great "I hate Wafflehead and Luminous Rose" thing. He then said on his last tour of the states a couple of things which were clearly in the realm of nonpositiveness. Life in the harem might be enjoyable if I could bring my sweetheart, my guitars and my powerbook. I guess there are enough of us people out here who are familiar with unix to have him let slide a few by on play-on-word (eww, not microsoft!) technicalities. -Mark Gloster mark_gloster@quickmail.apple.com ps. the Feg Crimson tape was just too good to be true. I would like to hear King Crimson do Glass, or Robyn play Matte Kudasai. I don't think I want to hear him play "Don't Kill the Whale" or anything else from the most tragic of all Yes albums (oh, that was Alan White anyway). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Feb 1996 17:37:32 -0500 (EST) From: Bayard Subject: Re: harems, tabs, and opinions (robyn's) Terry ponders: > Robyn ignores us on the internet, scribbles over his fans prized albums > and decides that he'd rather not have anyone travel to see him and the > female listmembers are fawning over him. Interesting. I wonder if it is a physical attraction too, or mostly due to his musical, artistic and intellectual talents. I'm no judge of a man's sexiness, but to me he is striking only in his surprising height when you meet him. Comments? Also, I think he ignores internet itself more than us, and any rudeness experienced from him is likely due to "the pressures of stardom" or artist's moodiness-- haha! (; I think he is a bit surprised by all the attention he gets, and perhaps doesn't like it so much. > I *try* to be nice on here and I'm locked in a tabbing room all day.. > This isn't because Robyn likes Eye and I don't is it? I think Eye is mostly something he had to get out of his system. The only albums I think he's particularly attached to are BSDR ("my all time party favorite," he said a long time ago), Feg (for nostalgic reasons), Trains and Element (is there anyone who DOESN'T like these?) and (strangely) Queen Elvis. Oh, and of course Underwater Moonlight. I think we all know which ones he especially doesn't like. (Pretty much everything else, perhaps; especially the no-longer-available soft boys stuff.) I think he liked PI and Respect when they came out, and he may still be fond of Respect. I'd advise against moving into the Robyn Love Palace, Terry. As I understand it, you're already locked in a tabbing room all day (albeit with acoustic lighting fixtures) and I have a feeling you'd have to become a eunuch (shudder) (; bayard ps. Wit, brains, and musical ability surely don't hurt, and though the height is definitely a factor (I'm 5'9", so most men I meet are around eye level, performers and otherwise) it isn't really the deciding factor. It would not, for example, explain how I had the hots for Bob Dylan for awhile, or why David Bowie starred in many of my adolescent fantasies. But I digress..... Someone asked if those not vulnerable to Robyn's odd sex appeal might find all of this annoying or if it "diminishes" us or him in their eyes. I'd like to hear about this too. Opinions, kids? I'd like >to hear about this too. Opinions, kids? The het male equivalent to attraction is admiration -- often for much the same reasons. I recognize a lot of really attractive qualities in Robyn Hitchcock -- really more in his on-stage and on-record persona, as I don't know the man at all. I appreciate, and envy, his cool sneering confidence, his incredible and effective imagination, and his being six foot two and entirely composed of dead sea creatures. I like to shout along to Soft Boys songs ... "and all those tiny insects look like YOU!" ... in order to imagine myself as the singer. Of course, I feel less that way now that he's been fairly explicit about the emotional and psychic damage he feels the Soft Boy attitude inflicted on him and those around him. Turning the question away from Robyn for a moment -- and I'm sure that if he's secretly reading any of this, he's probably horrified by now -- wouldn't other straight guys say that they can recognize and appreciate a really attractive male? It's closely related to standing in front of the mirror and criticizing the way you look because you don't match your personal ideal. (My personal ideal comes closer to the Robyn on the cover of Invisible Hitchcock than the one on the Sequel Sampler, though; I don't care much for polkadots.) I don't think hearing about someone's having the hots for Robyn Hitchcock "diminishes him in [my] eyes" -- but I do remember thinking, when _Queen Elvis_ came out, that the Old Robyn would have answered the question "Is ... this ... love?" with "No, it's emotional parasitism." But the Robyn of _Eye_ is pretty frank about the fact that he uses all of his body parts, including his heart. - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Feb 1996 01:25:09 -0500 (EST) From: Bayard Subject: i got the hots for... Attraction is something pretty well hard-wired into us crazy human beans, and I don't think anyone could be diminished for feeling it-- even if it's for someone one's never met. In fact I think everyone I've talked to about this has felt an attraction to some prominent figure/celebrity/ whatever. I was just wondrin', that's all. And yep, a few of us straight guys actually do take aesthetic pleasure in seeing a good looking male or other person who is not actually desired. Not all admiration is sexual. Thanks for sharing your feelings on this subject! ObRob: For my own pleasure, I'm thinking of compiling a tape of classic robyn moments-- rare songs, one-offs and the like-- in the spirit of the excellent _Uncarved Pumpkins_ cassette that was made by John Jones. It will consist mostly of excerpts from tapes of concerts and the other rarities some of us collect so crazily. If you have any recommendations about what should go on, please send me an email. I'm thinking things like Vomiting Cross, Dark Globe, The Mousaka Song, Laughter, The Speed of Things, The Hedgehog Song, Etc, etc. Maybe I'll throw in a song or two off the Queen Elvis outtakes, etc. Let me know what you think, or if you have a tape with rare good sounding bits. We could do something like this with the best stories, too. Put in your votes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
