It was neither a lyrical nor vocal triumph, but still was among the biggest selling R&B singles of 1977. Lead singer Charles Clark, along with Larry Cunningham, Paul and Ralph Mitchell, and Jonathan Murray weren't able to sustain whatever magic they generated with "Float On." The next two singles were actually superior performances to the hit. "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" and "I Just Want To Be With You" demonstrated that Clark could be an effective ballad singer, but neither could move beyond moderate R&B chart status. the end, .chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Feb 1996 20:07:41 -0800 (PST) From: Glen Uber Subject: Re: WHFS appearance Dates needed On Thu, 1 Feb 1996, Terry Marks wrote: > > xx/xx/85 "Progressive cafe" Robyn and Bill Bruford improvise some off > > the cuff covers including Lamb Lies down on Broadway, Cat Food and > > Indicipline. First and most importantly, Bruford was the drummer for King Crimson!!! Two of the above songs are King Crimson songs, and the third - LLDOB - is a Genesis tune, a song with which Bruford was probably familiar after having served a stint with Genesis in the mid-70s. Check out the album _3 Sides Live_. The line-up on the album includes 3 drummers...Bruford, Chester Thompson and the ubiquitous Mr. Collins. --g =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= E-mail: = hirsute@u.washington.edu = World Wide Web: = http://weber.u.washington.edu/~hirsute = =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Feb 1996 03:48:40 -0500 From: jojones@mailbox.syr.edu (John B. Robyn is asked to never come back. Is this for real? When I first read it I thought it must be a joke but many of us seem to be taking it seriously. Robyn & Bruford seems to be such an unbelievable pairing. Bruford has a reputation as being an extremely serious musician, while Robyn has a penchant for, well, silliness (sorry about that, I'm not trying to propagate the "eccentric Englishman" stereotype but sometimes the silliness in undeniable). Anyway, why would they do "Cat Food"? That comes from a King Crimson album (In the Wake of Poseidon) long before Bruford joined the band. That aside, though, the idea of Robyn doing "Indiscipline" is brilliant. I'd love to hear it ("I like it!"). Wasn't it The Floaters? I remember when this single came out, kinda similar to The Stylistics. Stefan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Feb 96 08:12:00 -0800 From: Russ Reynolds Subject: video compilation/farewell Bucky Got my video compilation yesterday--many thanks to m.brage,a&w rooney, and anyone else who had a hand in that. * I'd like to know who it was who taped the Golden Gate Park set--whoever you are, you were standing about five feet behind me. If you look closely at the bottom left corner of your screen just as IODOT is beginning, you'll see my camera come into view, hoisted above the sea of taller heads to snap a photo (I have no idea where this picture is now). * As leader of the "It's BUCKY" campaign, I sadly throw in the towel, as Robyn clearly sings "Mucky The Pig" in the D.C. performance (one of us has to get a copy of that performance to Tom Petty, by the way). * After watching the whole thing, my wife remarked that it could well be his inconsistant singing which has kept him from mass success. I'm inclined to agree that could be a major factor. I have a hunch that his poor performance on Letterman singing SYTHIL probably is the reason he never came back to do a spot on Letterman for PI. That couldn't have helped his career. Hopefully his improved singing of late--combined with those WB bucks--will propel him into the limelight. - -russ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Feb 1996 08:59:18 -0800 (PST) From: Glen Uber Subject: Re: WHFS appearance Dates needed On Fri, 2 Feb 1996, John B.
