Particularly pleased by "The Can Opener" and "Bells Of Rhymney" which were both new to me and "Tell Me About Your Drugs" which I've heard him play live but never owned. What interested me most were the copious sleeve notes these re-issues contain which go into some depth about the circumstances under which the albums were recorded, for instance, the Fegmania notes are basically about the formation of the Egyptians, and on 'Element' he describes the beach that inspired "airscape". If anyone not wanting to buy the CDs wants the notes, if you email me I'll type them up for you (allow me some time as I'm busy). So you can get the sound of the basic E chord by playing a normal first position E but - damping - the - third - string - so that there is no vestige of a G# sound in there whatsover (alternatively, finger the 4th fret on the third string to double up the B string). The picking order is then: 6th, 5th, (hint of 4th), 1st, 2nd. <- remember not to let string 3 sound! Second chord is that favourite A with an open B string: 1st: Open 2nd: Open 3rd: 2nd fret 4th: 2nd fret 5th: Open 6th: Open Picking order is: 5th, 4th, (hint of 3rd), 1st, 2nd. Third chord (second position B-shape with top 2 strings open): 1st: Open 2nd: Open 3rd: 4th fret 4th: 4th fret 5th: 2nd fret 6th: not used Picking order is: 5th, 4th, (hint of 3rd), 1st, 2nd. Mmmm! sounds good! Incidentally, those Egyptians sound just great: what a band! - not like dull Robyn Hitchcock and his weedy acoustic records . . . (no, I don't really mean it... but then, on the other hand, maybe, perhaps ...) - Mike Godwin PS Did Beaker have "It takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry" (R Zimmerman) on his list of covers? ------------------------------ From: jimm@dbu.edu Date: Mon, 29 Jan 96 15:40:48 -0600 Subject: Eye I know this is heresy to all you Eye-ophiles out there, but I must join the group of Fegsters for whom Eye does not hold as special of a place in their hearts as does, say, Respect or even Perspex Island. I think it's the general mood of Eye that lends me to not enjoy it as much... It seems uneven to me, it can't make up it's mind between emotional gut-spilling and quirky eccentricity. Track by track, I think I agree with Terry more than anyone else... The stuff I like I really, really like (Linctus House, Queen Elvis, Satellite, Glass Hotel) and most of everything else I have developed a sort of indifference to. I treat it much the same as I do Invisible Hitchcock... I don't automatically grab it when I want to hear a good Robyn tune. If I'm in that certain mood (there's that word again) then it's perfect--but otherwise, I usually just skip over it and put on something else like Respect or Element of Light, etc. Actually, I've taken to listening to Black Snake Diamond Role, now that I've traded in the Glass Fish for the new and improved Rhino rerelease--even sounds better! Funny, but in concert I think I like the solo Robyn, but on CD I think I like the Robyn-with-band better. Oh, I don't know... Robyn-with-band was pretty excellent, too! Anyway, just wanted to say why I don't appreciate Eye as much as some of you great folks---but I do like the CD and at certain times in my life it has meant a great deal to me. We had better get cracking on those translations though, as I hear Robyn himself plans to record a few tunes in French and become a superstar in the land of Gainsbourg. That will of course be AFTER the acoustic show played in my apartment exclusively for ME, during which I get Robyn to tearfully admit that Eye is the best damn record he ever made. He is so overwhelmed with my musical acumen that he proposes to me and we run away to France together. It is at this point that he gets the idea to take France by storm with catchy little tunes like "Ecoutant aux Higsons" which earn him pots and pots of money. So much money, in fact, that we are able to move to a large (yet cozy) chateau with enough guestrooms to house everyone on the feglist whenever they wish to visit. Get cracking Robyn, it's not as though I have all day! Thus, there may well be loads more people who want copies. If anyone has the time, equipment and inclination to help me provide these to people (I'm having them send blanks and postage paid SASE) it would be much appreciated. (i've made well over fifty double-cassette sets so far for the list, and have no idea how many PVs readers might want-- maybe none, maybe more than this list wanted.) We also need to figure out a way to divvy them up-- I'd rather not have to write back to all of them and tell them who to contact. Maybe just put my address and those of those who would assist in the zine, and let prospective listeners throw darts at us... positive voodoo... sincere thanks in advance for your selfless offers of help ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jan 1996 16:20:19 -0800 From: cagedrat@ix.netcom.com (Rob Zarzecki ) Subject: WHFS appearance Dates needed Hello everyone, Recently I got a tape of 3 WHFS appearances by Robyn from a lovely trader in MD. Can anyone help me with dates for my trade list? What I gather the appearances are: the recent one from January, 1996 (7th) "Just passing thru" at Omega Studios, Rockville(?) MD. Includes "satellite of Love" and "Weasel turned his back on NYC" improv. One from 12/?/89 "Lunchtime cafe" "Ride and "snow strike" (improv.) are performed. One from Feb? 95 with Deni Bonet "flashback cafe" this was before a 9:30 club gig that same evening. "Arms of Love, De Chir St and You've got" are performed xx/xx/85 "Progressive cafe" Robyn and Bill Bruford improvise some off the cuff covers including Lamb Lies down on Broadway, Cat Food and Indicipline. Robyn is asked to never come back. any help would garner smiles, help my list fill some holes, and generally make the world a better place jack of all trades, rob z ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
