I have no idea where the "Northern >Line" goes (I assume north from London....to where??? 50/52 stations >between London and....Newmarket? or 50/52 between London and like, say, >Aberdeen? what kind of scale are we talkin' here?) I know it's been answered in full, but the length of the line in total must be close to 25-30 miles. There's one main line from High Barnet, just north of London (place of birth of one J. Dignan, now of New Zealand) that heads south to Morden in the south of the city. The line splits in two for much of this length, the western branch travelling from Camden Town via Tottenham Court Road and Leicester Square in central london to Kennington (one of the homes of that most delightful and arcane of sports, cricket). The eastern branch also joins at Camden town and Kennington, but in between it travels through Kings Cross-St Pancras. There are two large branch lines off to the north of Camden town, one going to Mill Hill, the other to Edgware. Other points of interest: Wimbledon, home of tennis and the wombles. Highgate and Archway. Our Robyn lived around this area for some considerable time. The New Vaudeville Band had a minor hit with the song "Finchley Central( on the Northern Line)". At one time, the main line tunnel on the NL was the world's longest railway tunnel (19 miles) Point of derision: long time MP for Finchley (another of the northern line stations) was one Margaret Thatcher. attempted map (apologies in advance) - Edgware - Barnet \_ | \_ Mill | \_ Hill- | \_ \ | \_ \_| \_ | \_ | \_ | \_ | \_| | | Camden town |------ | \ | \ | \ | | | | | | | | | / | / | / | / | / | / | / |/ Kennington / / / / / - Morden James PS: Go the Bees! I interviewed Robyn nearly a year ago (April 95- doesn't seem it could have been that long ago) when he played the Park West in Chicago. At first, he seemed a bit closed, but started to open up when the depth of my questions ensured I was a fan and not the, "So, you write a lot about fish don't you," type of journalist. Anyway, I'll quit waxing poetic about one of my fondest moments and get on with the point. Robyn started having fun with the interview (we actually started to exchanged some verbal wordplay- guess who won) and at one point he asked, "do you know what I'm going to do next?" He went on to say (ok, this is the point of my post) that a lot of people on the internet seem to know what he's going to do next before he does! (paraphrase- "perhaps if they say I'm going to quit recording and concentrate on painting I will. Maybe life will start to imitate the internet and I wait to be told what I'll do in the future.") So, it seems he IS aware of us and is perhaps reading this as well... I would be happy to pick it up or make tapes for anyone who is interested. "[L]anguage is a great way for two tribes to get the wrong idea about each other. "Wolcott's Medicine Show" is a Band cover. I suspect "won't you take a chance with me" is a Roxy Music cover. Same as the song "Take a Chance With Me" from the Avalon album ("I'm a fool, but I believe/Won't you take a chance with me?"). Could "Drip Drop" be a cover of Irma Thomas' "Raindrops" ("I guess I'll just go crazy tonight" with a chorus intoning "drip drop" in the background) or is it another song altogether? I just mailed one to a fellow fegmaniac for $1.01 postage. If anybody else would like to make arrangements for me to purchase one for them, drop me an e-mail, they have a few left. http://home.aol.com/HSatterfld "Unmarried men commit ninety percent of all violent acts. So, in addition to recording about a zillion brilliant albums tomorrow (well okay, he can clone himself first), giving them all away to us for free, and winning every global lottery (to make up for giving away all those free CDs), Robyn will personally fund all of us in whatever we wish to undertake for the rest of our lives. I may need help spelling accommodations.... There are two of us, but we are not a couple. We are looking for a cheap place in a reasonably safe neighborhood. Dumps are fine! Any UK fegs have a suggestion? Please e-mail me directly. I won't be able to make the trip if I can't afford it! I would also reallllllly like some goos record store suggestions. If I go, I'd lover to be able to peruse some good record/cd stores. ON a recommendation from someone on this list, I went to Berkeley and checked out Amoeba Records. They literally have a STACK of Queen Elvis on CD. I wanted to buy about 5 copies for friends that now like and want it but are unable to find it (it is out of print). But, as always happens, I found so much stuff that I HAD to have that there was no funds left over. There are some list members in the Bay Area (no. cal)--perhaps they can help you.
