I'll go home and try it out as soon as I've marked these next 20 papers... On the tapir front, are we talking about the really attractive, black and white Malayan tapirs, or the dowdy, boring, dreary brown Brazilian tapirs? (not that I have any particular preference) And a capybara comment: as the capybara is a native of South America, it is highly unlikely that you would find one in the Sahara - in any case, it would probably keep bumping into those ironing boards. Gaudalajara (sp.?) might be a more approporiate location, but would present scansion problems... - Mike (Color Out Of Space) Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jan 1996 14:55:09 -0500 (EST) From: Terry Marks Subject: RE: Duels > BUT SERIOUSLY... > Does anyone have any idea about Robyn's views of his past material? He seems to HATE the GD series. He liked recording BSDR. He compared being a Soft Boy to findign out that you were an SS officer on March 16, 1946 [did I get the date right?] but was amazed that Underwater Moonlight managed to sound good. I don't think that he publicly acknowledges the existance of Groovy Decay, Two Halves for the Price of One, or Jet Set Flier. That's all I know Terry PS Enough Respect vs Eye. Let's try IODOT vs BSDR [or maybe Eye vs Iodot, Iodot vs respect, Eye vs BSDR, or Respect vs BSDR] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jan 1996 19:59:02 +0000 From: Jim Bower Subject: 26 Jan and its entrails Greetings Fegs, I've just got home after my weekend down south which included the Friday night 12-bar club gig. Loads and loads and loads to say!! 1. Didn't meet any of you UK fegs there...not surprising, given the vagueness of the description I gave of my clothing and ex-girlfriend, but also the club was so hilariously cramped, communication with anyone not immediately squashing me would have been pretty hazardous. I was the one who shouted "where do you get your shirts, Robyn??!!" (he cleverly ignored this question). I had a great view of him from the neck down and stooped or squatted for most of it thanks to the low ceiling above me. For once, Sarah had height advantage at 5 foot 4. 2. I didn't write a setlist down (where did the word "skinny" come from, by the way?). I assumed someone else would. Some real surprises though...that Van Morrisson song, f'rinstance, and 'More Than This' by Bryan Ferry?? Blimey. Thoroughly enjoyable, of course. Highlights for me were "Glass" (forgotten how good that was), "Kingdom of Love" and "Higsons" was a hoot. 3. Mark Ellen. Not only sighted, but he got up and played three songs inbetween Robyn's sets which was mirthsome. Nice bloke actually, I spoke to him at the bar...he was surprised I remembered him from the TV, I told him that since he presented the BBC's "Live Aid" coverage he was probably somewhere in everyone's video collection. Anyway, there I was stood at the bar talking to the editor of Q Magazine and (hard to believe though this is) I had FORGOTTEN TO BRING THE SODDING FREUD SQUAD CD!! Left six of them in the car, only realised when I got there. Buggerbuggerbugger. 4. Andy Metcalfe. I was so pleased he not only turned up, but played along with RH for a lot of the set. Marvellous. They are such a good double act, they got the old banter going and I was struck by the feeling that these two men should be working together if only for the undoubted compatibility of their senses of humour, plus his presence seemed to relax Robyn a lot. 5. Mushy Jenner, Mrs Wafflehead UK. (Part 1) Spoke to her too, I wanted to ask her why details of this gig were only posted to the South-East portion of their mailing list, and got the chance. She said it was under the instructions of Robyn himself, which I wasn't at all pleased about. Robyn rarely plays in the North, I was once told this is because they don't make much money up here which seemed fair enough, but this sounded very odd. Feeling persecuted by this latitude-discrimination, I asked why, surely the postage cost isn't that high?? She said she thought Robyn wanted to discourage people travelling long distances to see him. WHA?????? Can't figure that at all...partly because most of the audience appeared to be fairly dedicated fegs...the bloke stood next to me had only missed a couple of UK gigs in the last 10 years. There's a chap who some of you may know called Laurence/Lawrence that is known to be the No1 never-miss-a-gig UK fan (and judging by his excellent shirt on the night I could believe it). I'd seen him before, he puts vegetables on stage sometimes. I'd have thought Robyn needs people like Lawrence, and the bloke next to me, and me...he's not a mass-market kinda guy, he's probably got a smaller fan base than most and to survive this long he needs them to be dedicated. I took a day off work and drove 250 miles through a snowstorm to watch him play in a Soho cupboard, and to be told by the daughter of his manager that he would rather I hadn't bothered pissed me off! 6. Mushy Jenner (part 2). Told her as a result of above conversation that I had found out about this gig over the net. She was unaware of the existence of the feglist and I got the impression she didn't particularly want to hear about it. Well, I said, if you wanna get information out to the netfanbase, it's cheap and easy, plus it's growing etc etc etc. Found myself coming out with the usual stuff we say to explain things net-related to non-net-folks, and gave up. I'd like to know if anyone here has ever approached Robyn or any of his entourage and mentioned the feglist? Mushy certainly wasn't interested. I wonder sometimes what RH would think if he read half the stuff posted here and this raises the question, has he ever? Any fegs brought up the subject of this list with him, or Sincere before? 7. Robyn. I thought he started nervously, he looked tired and seemed less coherent than usual, but this wore off quite quickly (as I said Andy seemed to help a lot) and it became another vintage event. He said it was his last gig for a while, his voice needed a break and he needed to 'clean out his system and give up everything at once as it's easier than giving them up one at a time.' Said he wanted to do another 12-bar residency 'sometime over the summer, perhaps Christmas.' And something about giant cyborg ants... 8. There are, in fact, only 50 stations on the Northern Line. I know this because I travelled along it several times over the weekend and counted them several times (on the map). I would be interested to know what happened to the other two. Well, personally, "Certainly Cliquot" is about as gimmicky as Robyn gets.. > novelty artist"? puh-lease. all i can say is, if you can listen to this > album and not be moved, then you might as well be dead. Well, I'm not totally dead, according to my pulse, and I think: Cynthia Mask: The first three verses are kind of boring, listless and meaningless. No real relation to the song, way I see it. Musically, it sounds like "Wax Doll", only without the strings, extra guitars and charm. Certainly Cliquot: One of those times where he takes a tune and destroys it, like Superman or Furry Green Atom Bowl..lyrically, it's a rambling mess without even the typical wittiness or strangeness [and deny it if you'd like, but Robyn can be very witty and very strange]. THere's nothing particularly "Eye"-ish about it. It doesn't sound very heartfelt or cathartic or honest or whatever. It could have just as easily have been on BSDR, Groovy, IODOT or Fegmania. Queen Elvis: Now this one is good. Flesh Cartoons: My favourite song on the album. Chinese Water Python: Tolerable, but not nearly as good as some of his other guitar work Executioner: I like the lyrics, I like the verse, but the way he sings the chorus makes me cringe. Linctus House: The opposite of executioner. I like the chorus, I think its one of his better ones, but the verse just seems to be abstract rambling. I think that maybe he ought to have put the "Linctus House" chorus in "Executioner" instead. Sweet Ghost of Light, Transparent Lovers, College of Ice: Never heard them. Got the tape, not the CD. Beautiful Girl: Repetitive and boring. I know that if it were on Respect, it would be singled out as "an example of Robyn trying to be pop" or bad songwriting or something similar. Raining Twilight Coast: I like it all, except for the last verse. It seems like on some songs Robyn can write two verses, then just toss a third one in that has no relation to the song and is centered around something odd like fish or dwarves (Chinese Bones). If anyone else has any examples of songs like this, let me know Agony of Pleasure: I agree with what I read in Positive Vibrations. It sounds like "somehting a schoolboy wrote in maths". or suchlike. Well, I'm quotign it wrong, I know, but whatever they said, I agree. Satellite: "growing betsy in a bag and she don't mind as long as things are round". If we're getting into moving lyrics and no silliness or gimmicry..... Aquarium: Another great song.. Clean Steve: I like the 10 minute story versions better. It reads like the track listing from everyone's dream bootleg tapes. However, this particular factoid isn't true: >WHERE WE WERE BORN IN TIME (9.24.94)"A fairly recent Dylan song."... >it's actually WIDE OPEN STAR (!neurotic sf 9.24.94) "Wide Open Star" was also played at Neurotic, but "Born In Time" is, in fact, a recent Dylan song (with that name). He played both songs that day. Interestingly enough, when Robyn returned to the Great American Music Hall and played "Wide Open Star," its lyrics bore little resemblance to the just-written version he had played at Neurotic Records a year before. By the way, is "Chinese White" the correct name of the song by the Incredible String Band, on 5000 Layers of the Onion, whose refrain is "I will lay me down with my arms around the rainbow"? - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
