I don't think stripping down a song makes it sound any more "honest"... It's content, delivery, and arrangement for me. And the content of Respect is easily the most intimate and personal thing I've ever heard out of Robyn. And the arrangements reflect the content. PERFECT!!!! It just moves me man, rocks my world... If you're still with me, I was wondering what Robyn songs people have had the greatest change of heart about. I used to think Luminous Rose was horrible. Then about a year later it crept up on me, and now: Luminous Rose is my favorite Robyn song of all time. I also used to hate Superman... And about a year later I realized what a fool I was, and now I think it's easily the best song on QE!!!! This, however, did not and will not ever happen to "The Shapes between us throw up into animals" Or Whifflehead... YUCK!!! In another 5 years, I'll be laughing at my own stupidy... Yesterday I found a copy of the Madonna of the Wasps promo CD single for 3 dollars. I am very happy. Be apart of the Respect love-in. Downtown San Jose. Eulipia on S. First. Nice artwork, brick walls, upscale menu, Pilsner Urquell on tap. The kind of place where a silk lizard shirt would fit in well. Then down the block to S. Okay, this is probably a stupid question that's already been covered or is just really obvious. Is Robyn English? Ha, ha, just kidding, I just wanted to make my *real* question look like it wasn't as dumb as it is. I can't find _Queen Elvis_ *anywhere*--not at Newbury Comics in Boston, not at HMV in NYC...where might I procure a copy? I need suggestions that are relatively easy to draw since I'm not that talented. So far I have an "Eye", a "Man with the Lightbulb Head", a fish, and a "Madonna of the Wasps". Any other ideas? EYE has an amazing visceral delivery that is nowhere to be found on RESPECT. the production on the latter is not merely piled on studio gimmicrey, but rather, a real achievment. the songwriting is where the real controversy has any merit. RESPECT is probably the most mature and palatable stuff he has thrown together. the songs are awesome! (by the way, for all of you professed haters of this album, who, after hearing many acoustic live sendups, have decided to ban it in their homes, can we PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make some of these wondrous recordings available in some kind of tape tree? why not enjoy both, i say? the only song i've heard acoustic from this album is 'the yip song'.) i've always enjoyed 'wafflehead'. there are no bad songs on this album. lately i listen to RESPECT more frequently than any other album. it took awhile, but i now love it. i consider it to be robyn's most lush aural landscape to date. the songs on EYE run the gambit from intense and personal tales of heartache and betrayal to silly non-sequators (note: napoleon died on the island of st. helena after waterloo. he was imprisoned on elba, but escaped to france to start up another french offensive but lost it in waterloo. he had an ulcer from candice bergen's constant refusal to see him.) and in-jokes. this album has consistantly stirred me in the most profound way. 'linctus house', 'glass hotel', 'transparent lovers', 'sweet ghost of light', 'raining twilight coast' and 'aquarium' are delicate and sweet. 'executioner', 'queen elvis', 'flesh cartoons' and 'cynthia mask' are bitter and quite cathartic. 'agony of pleasure', 'clean steve', 'certainly clickot' and 'beautiful girl' are pretty silly, but great fun. this album is not for everyone (RESPECT on the other hand is) but remains my favorite since it taps into the heart and soul of robyn like we may never see again. perhaps inspired by a&m, at least in part, it stands like an oasis in the desert of what many fegs seem to consider a misguided detour of his career. "quarky novelty artist"? puh-lease. all i can say is, if you can listen to this album and not be moved, then you might as well be dead. ken "it might sound dodgey now" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jan 1996 16:39:21 -0800 Subject: Re: A Lovely Day for a Poll From: Tom Clark "fegManiax" As we seem to be tangentializing(?) on language recently, I thought I would share this with the list, it's a mailing list which delivers a new dictionary entry to you each day.
