Newton) Subject: Robyn dream thread ... Hello Fegs! I am new to the list, but have been monitoring awhile. I noticed the bits about Robyn dreams, and though I am sure I've had them, I do not recall any at the moment. However ... I saw him live about a year ago shortly after arriving in Dallas at a small bar called Poor David's Pub, where I got to sit next to the stage (aka a platform) not more than an arms-length or two away. This was like a dream to me!!! He needed to brush past me to get on/off the stage. I was resting my feet on the platform (I mean stage...) and tripped him accidentally! He didn't go tumbling to the floor or anything, just caught my foot slightly. My first impression on seeing him in person was how tall he is. I somehow never got that from pictures. He was also incredibly thin compared to the previous time I saw him at the Ritz in NYC (Respect tour I think??) I later got an autograph though I was completely unprepared. He had to write on my directions to the club. He seemed annoyed that no one brought any LP covers or anything. There are not alot of people who I would get flustered to meet, but our boy was definately one of them! This was better than a dream, because it was real! His daughter was at the show and he dedicated the song to her, making some 70s/hippie comment I believe. Curiously, I have also seen Game Theory and Camper Van Beethoven open shows with it. RH&E performed it as an acapella at the middle of the show, the way they did "Uncorrected Personality Traits" during the PI tour. So, if you've heard early acoustic versions of songs that were later released as full-blown productions, most of the time you're going to prefer the acoustic version, and vice-versa. Likewise if the first Robyn album you heard was acoustic, you might always prefer to hear him that way. The electric/acoustic debate is all very interesting, but really I see it as much more of an economic/practical issue for Robyn than a stylistic/aesthetic one for us fans. It simply costs less to record and tour acoustically, and since Robyn seems to sell almost the same number of records either way, what do you expect him to do? Recording albums in a studio is a lot like sex, in a way. It's great while it's happening, but when it's over, you've got a lot of cleaning up to do, and a few days later you look back on it and wonder what all the fuss was about. In fact, the analogy can be taken even further than that: The entire business of recording and performing music is quite similar to the male sexual experience in general. (Maybe I'd compare it to the female sexual experience, if I were female.) I mean, basically, to become a musician (i.e., sexually active person) you have to first learn an instrument (look at lots of dirty pictures) and get to the point where you can play in front of others (go out on dates). You get gigs (heavy snogging) and try to make enough money (score points) to go into a studio (bed) and record songs (do the nasty). Eventually you do mixdowns (climax), but after that you have to lug all your gear out (lug all your gear out) and all you have to show for it are some rough mixes (stained sheets), which quickly lose their appeal (begin to stink). If you're lucky you'll have finished masters (high-rez videotapes), but even then nothing comes of it unless you can get your songs (sperm cells) to a record company (ovum) that's interested in expanding it's stable of artists (ovulating). If your tape is accepted (fertilization!), you might get signed (married) to a recording contract (pre-nuptial agreement), but they could always dump you (dump you) and reneg on the record deal (miscarraige). What's more, your relationship might become strained if the record (baby) turns out to be a commercial flop (ugly, loud, and/or obnoxious). You try to keep the company (wife) happy by writing more songs (more sex) and doing another record (more kids) but they're always meddling and nagging at you (meddling and nagging at you) to tour and promote more (work harder and stay thin). Eventually the whole thing ends in a lawsuit (divorce case), and you get out of your contract at great loss to yourself (alimony), and try to get on with your career (life), but inevitably you fade into obscurity (die). Robyn has been through plenty of that sort of thing recently, don't you think? So I don't blame him if he'd rather be doing acoustic stuff; I just like the electric stuff better. Sorry to go on...it's late. --John H. "JH3" Hedges ------------------------------ From: Hedblade@aol.com Date: Wed, 24 Jan 1996 05:39:08 -0500 Subject: Re: KungFu Fighting There is indeed a recorded version of Robyn doing "Kung Fu Fighting." It is available on a UK compilation called "Alvin Lives (In Leeds)." Some of the money from the comp went to fight the Poll Tax (i.e. you have to pay a tax in order to vote) business that was turning England into a police state a few years ago. The recorded version is much the same as the live version some of you have seen. The disc also includes tracks from Lush, Cud, Close Lobsters (GREAT band), The Wedding Present, and a bunch of others I can't think of now, doing versions of songs that were UK hits in the '70s. I only had it on cassette for years, and then in August or September of '95 I found a CD copy at a Coconuts record chain store for (gasp) $7.99!!!! They had a few copies, but when I went back a month or so later to pick up The Jazz Butcher's "Condition Blue" (which they had for the same price), the whole damn bin was gone! I must have stopped in 8 or 9 Coconuts stores before I gave up. It raises an interesting question: There must be an abundance of these cut outs here in the US if one store had five or six of them- WHERE ARE THEY NOW??!!!!! It's great while This was a very interesting post, although I have problems with the metaphor equating performing live with dating and recording in a studio with sex... Have done a bit of both, *performing* is much more like sex, at its best creating a weird feedback loop of emotional energy between the participants, being kinda messy and unpredictable, and producing an intense pleasurable sensation. Whereas I've always found studio experiences to be very sterile -- the best part is laying the backing tracks, which is much more like performing, but, gawd, doing overdubs is a pain in the ass! Not even much like masturbation...more like chewing stale gum... doug ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jan 1996 13:24:08 -0600 (CST) From: VERMIN-IN-TRAINING Subject: feg theme OK so I'm through (for the most part) with the graphic setup for a fegmaniax win95 PLUS theme...its got the Globe of Frogs painting as the background, the RH God walks among us as the computer the Lovers painting changes from blue to red when trash is deposited (a subliminal growth from my bitterness no doubt) so now I'm ready to do the sounds and don't have any...so if some kind soul with access to/or can make some short RH .wav files could talk to me soon I can get on the stick for getting this posted to MushMouth or somewhere jay %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Jay Lyall "All my friends do the model girl thing hist1a@jetson.uh.edu So I found me one University of Houston Now she wears my nose ring" --Lloyd Cole "Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip" "There's liquor on my breath --Robyn Hitchcock And you on my mind" --Replacements %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jan 1996 15:01:19 -0600 (CST) From: VERMIN-IN-TRAINING Subject: Lunch with Uncle Bobby OK a quick game to break up the monotony of the Eye vs Respect debate....
