Jones) Subject: WHY I DISLIKE RESPECT. Eye is my favorite. Why? I like the acoustic Robyn best. But I also like the group dynamic--Robyn, Andy, and Morris all interacting together. So, after the PI tour, when Robyn began talking about the new album they were working on, he said it was going to be "totally acoustic"---"we recorded it in my kitchen on the Isle of Wight." Then they went on a quick tour in summer of 1992. Robyn, Andy and Morris all acoustic. I missed it due to lack of info, but I have tapes....it was fabulous. Very stripped down. Dreamy, quintessential. I began to fantasize about how great Respect would be. Then it came out. I got the feeling that the basic tracks WERE acoustic and laid down live in the kitchen. I wish they could've just used the basic tracks only. Made it all acoustic. Railway Shoes is a good example of what the WHOLE album could've sounded like. Arms of Love in a simple form could've been the single that would turn heads. The arrangements of the tunes on Respect are what ruin the album for me. That, and the fact that it was the first album where, when it came out, I already knew 80% of the songs from having listened to live tapes. .:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.: : John B. I saw that tour and heard songs like When I Was Dead a few months before Respect was released. What I'd heard live was a far cry over what was released. I kept asking myself if Respect would turn out like Eye, which I was cold on at first but now count as one of my favorites. But no, Respect still falls short (for me), with a few bright moments (Railway Shoes and Serpent...) I don't really think that though that Arms of Love had star-making potential. This album didn't really have any true radio-friendly songs, which is one thing I do like about it. PI I do like but it suffers from a little too many attempts at crowd-pleasing. I like to see at least one place on each disk where Robyn takes a big risk on goes out on the edge (Wafflehead excluded: I just can't grasp it, no matter how hard I twist my mind). If I like an album on first listen, I get jittery about its staying power. I like work that's subtle and complex and grows better over time, like Eye was for me. So patiently I waited for Respect to work its magic on me. Alas, it never did. I don't think it's necessarily bad, just dull in spaces and, yes, overproduced in others. But I LOVE "The Yip Song" (go figure), thought "Driving Aloud" was a cool single, and enjoy "Serpent" very much (and usually include it on friend comps). Just wanted to add these sundry redundancies. Friday night's gig at the Twelve Bar was much more enjoyable for me than 2 weeks previous. I don't know if it was the cup of coffee beforehand, or the front row seat in the balcony overlooking the stage or the Long Island Iced Tea or the relaxed atmosphere in the company of fellow fegs or the soothing, jingly jangly sounds of support band Homer or maybe a combination of all, but things were just better. Following next Friday's 4-week finale, I may have to seek therapy as I have become quite used to seeing Robyn on an every week basis. Don't know if anyone wants to chime in that was there, but I have to say that this was one of my favorite (top 3) sets that I've heard Robyn play. This could be a disastrous thread to begin, but I'll start with a rather boring one: Shortly before a RH solo show a few years back, I dreamt that Robyn was at our apartment with some friends of mine. We wanted him to play some songs, but everyone was afraid to ask since we didn't want to be pushy to our guest. Then Andy Metcalfe was suddenly there with a fretless bass (no place to plug it in mind you) and he started playing a song (I can't remember which one). The dream transformed itself out of my apartment and into the club in Portland, Oregon where the show was to take place. The strange thing was, Robyn was very worried about playing to loud and waking the neighbors. I also remember Robyn to be about seven feet tall in this dream and he asked if we had any acid to give him. We didn't, but he didn't seem all that disappointed. No, I don't have dreams about the musicians I admire often. This is one of the only ones...Except for the one where the guys from Camper Van Beethoven played a gig in my living room, got drunk on marguiritas, and took off with my blender. But that's one for a different mailing list. Sunday: continuous play) and came to the following conclusions: 1. Globe Of Frogs is much better than I ever gave it credit for. I hope the same kind of positive energy comes through on his Warner Brothers debut as well. 2. Anyone who thinks EYE is a great album ought to think the same about Respect. 3. "Wafflehead" and "Luminous Rose" are both worthwhile tunes (my shuffler did me the favor of playing them back-to-back, and I actually enjoyed the experience). "Certainly Clickot" still annoys me. 4. While it does contain several good tunes, Perspx Island is a rather lifeless album next to the other four. Some comparitively bland songs. The biggest disapointment of the bunch for me. 5. Alternate versions as bonus tracks are a bad idea in the age of CD shuffle. Seems like every third song I heard was "Queen Elvis" I'd rank 'em thusly: 1. Globe of Frogs 2. Respect 3. Queen Elvis 4. Eye 5. In it I mentioned that perhaps the Robin Hitchcock reissues did not do as well as hoped for. I went on to say that maybe Robyn's signing with a major label would draw interest in his back catalog. Much to my surprise I found a package from Rhino sitting on my doorstep Friday evening. Inside I found a letter, a CD, and a catalog. Here is the handwritten letter: Thanks for the letter - we feel the same way. Hope the word on RH kicks in bigger when he is back on an evil major. Here's a catalog and rare sampler. -Jim Neill -Rhino Records Sure enough the CD was the 22-Track Robyn Hitchcock (& The Egyptians) Catalog Sampler (PRCD 7083). I seem to remember reading that the version of "Goodnight I Say" on this sampler is different to the album version. Is this true? None of the tracks listed indicate anything other than being on the reissue. Suddenly and mysteriously about 2 months ago I stopped getting my feg messages. I tried to contact Woj--no answer. I tried unsubscribing and resubscribing--to no avail. I finally admitted defeat and figured I'd never (sniff) ever (sniff) hear from you lovely and extremely beautiful people (weepy) again! Then, last week I got violently and copiously ill--and when I returned from work today I had a bunch of Feg! messages in my email! Hallelujiah! It's great to be back--and you'll all never know how much I missed you! And now for something completely.... My friends and I nominated "Too Drunk to EXPLETIVE" by the Dead Kennedy's for our graduation song. I didn't know anything about Robyn back then, but if I would have--I'm sure I would have picked one of his songs, too. (Kudos for "Mellow Together" -- a lovely song, indeed) Neil Young's "Comes a Time" won. Come to think of it, it's seems almost ridiculous to imagine back then that Mr. Young would be even MORE popular 12 years later in good ol' 1996! Go figure! Now for something about Robyn... Seeing "Cold Turkey" mentioned recently reminded me of a question I have wanted to pose for awhile... I know that Robyn liked(s) the Beatles quite a bit--(I've seen him list "Revolver" as one of his faves of all time). (Incidentally, a bunch of the songs on "Revolver" have that weird backwards guitar that can be found on "Element of Light" -- suppose he got that idea from the Fabs?) Can anyone list all the Beatles songs has he covered that are available on vinyl/cassette/CD--and are there other songs that he plays (or has played) at concerts, too? ps. I was studying for the GRE last weekend and I learned many great new words. I think that Robyn might want to consider some of them as candidates for his new album title. In fact, we ought to have a contest where we all submit suggestions for the title--and then we vote to see which one wins. Then we try to talk Robyn into using it... We can all dream, can't we!? Well, anyhow, here's my suggestions: "The Intransigent Cow" "Not Now Eric, Can't You See I'm Imprecating!?" "Denude Furniture" "Your Turpitude Isn't Delicious, It's Just Fun" I love you, man! On the last Egyptians tour I was at soundcheck and the boys did "Rain" by the Fabs. Morris told me later that they didn't ever do it live- just for soundcheck. Has anyone ever heard them do it? Is it any wonder that Robyn loves Revolver? To the grave I'll argue that it is as fresh today as the day it was released. Just to bring the whole thing full circle (see Subject), a small group of us had a BIG push (flyers, ads in the student paper, etc.) at my high school for "I Saw Her Standing There" as the graduation tune. Sure, it's not nearly as cool as some of the off the wall pieces nominated here, but it seemed like it might have had a chance (I think the final count was 60 or 70 votes in a class of about 800), and was without a doubt better than "Take A Look At Me Now" by Phil Collins (the winner, obviously). Respect, as I've said, was the first RH album I heard, and until about 1995 was my favorite RH album. It's the nostalgia thing. I was raised on nutrasweet and fat-free frozen yogurt, so I hate regular soda and ice cream, even if the gourmets say the latter taste better.
