(he did not use any of his usual songwriting devices), and the melody has a dark ages quality (and less interesting than his own, I might add), I stand by my suspicions. On the other hand, Robyn has shown so much variety in his repertoire that I can believe that he is capable of writing an historic musical work. I just wonder what he did with the other seventeen verses that happen after the plot has run its course. Now had this been an Irish ballad, it probably would've ended happier, but still not as quickly as RH did it. -Mark I think my sense of humor and my seemingly random dental structure proudly reflect my Irish/Scottish/English heritage ------------------------------ From: Hedblade@aol.com Date: Wed, 17 Jan 1996 23:20:03 -0500 Subject: Re: a+m promo questions There is indeed a full size CD single of "Baloon Man" with the electric "Globe Of Frogs" on it. Have seen it many times (and many copies) at Tower in Chicago and seem to run acoss it fairly often in other stores. Haven't been living there for the past few months (but still paying rent!), so I can't say what the current status is. Would be happy to pick some up and trade if anyone's looking for it. In ralation to the the Sequel CD comp, I picked up a rather strange CD single from the same company at Tower over the summer. It's a single of "My Wife And My Dead Wife," but it also has the entire contents of the K Records single (although Robyn's speach at the front of "I Something You" is clipped off). The strange part is, I bought it at Tower and when I got home I noticed that it says FOR PROMOTION ONLY. What gives- anyone? Beth p.s.--another good alternative is to go for the mass appeal, suggest closer by NIN, and laugh at the videotape which will show your entire class saying, "It's your sex I can smell" to hundreds of parents, faculty, and staff. What about "Lady Waters & the Hooded One"?...it goes on far too long and really doesn't say much. I also find the music boring for the same reason I find the music to "Luminous Rose" and "Freeze" boring: there is not enough happening with the melodies, harmonies and chord changes to hold my attention. BTW...my graduation song was "The Time of My Life" from "Dirty Dancing". Given the choice, I think I would rather listen to "Luminous Rose". I figure Robyn has averaged about 1.5 subpar songs per album. Not bad considering his total output. However, there are some real gems there, for me. Much the same applies to Respect. Here's the question- why do so many of you disrespect Respect? Perhaps it's a sign of my age, but I thought it was a leap forward for Robyn. I enjoy the funny stuff as much as anyone, but Respect was full of lyrics that for once seemed to come from the heart ("Railway Shoes," "...Gates of Wisdom"). But hey, what do I know? Hedblade@aol.com P.S.- I forgot which one of you has the Lloyd Cole lyric on your postings, but I'm glad somebody else also liked Bad Vibes! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 96 18:03:17 CST From: Truman Peyote Subject: funny stuff a-goin on Respect is a quantum leap BACKWARD from Eye, which is all (with the exception of "Certainly Clikot" and "Clean Steve", which I guess is a comic song although it's a rather bitter one) emotional, serious stuff. In fact, I would venture to place Eye in a category with albums like Blood on the Tracks and Plastic Ono Band, in the sense that it is so raw, spare, and "take-no-prisoners" that at times it is difficult to listen to. I also consider "I Often Dream of Trains" to be quite a serious record, in spite of the presence of "Mellow Together" and "Uncorrected Personality Traits" (which actually does have a serious point to make concerning the silliness one encounters in the world of academia :)). It's not a matter of yer age. Could it possibly be the battle of the acoustic RH fans (ME! ME!) vs. the electric RH fanciers rearing its ugly, asparagus flavored head once again?
