As do I. I must take issue with the description of this sound as "highly annoying." I think it sounds silvery and liquid, like raindrops hitting the top of your car as you speed down the highway, and adds the perfect effect to the tune. Subject: WHFS broadcast news Big news in Robyn's on-air broadcast last night! (at least, I don't recall having seen this here yet). Our man has signed to Warner Brothers, and _Shadowcat_ or whatever it's called this week will be out in May. About 25 songs have been recorded, though they haven't done the drums yet; about half will be on the album and the rest may surface as b-sides and such. Set included: I Something You, Vegetation and Dimes, Satellite of Love, One Long Pair of Eyes (for real, this time), DeChirico Street, Weasel Turned His Back on New York, and You and Oblivion. Wow! This is shocking! You would think that after Robyn's messy A&M contract, that he would've stayed away from the "big leagues". At the same time, it is flattering that a big label would think enough of Robyn, even if it is in terms of potential earnings, to sign him. P.S. Who taped this show and how may I obtain it from you? This is the first time I have heard of the Weasle Turned His Back on New York song. Has he played it before? Are there any songs that he hasn't played live yet planned for the album? Wanner Brothers does seem a little odd. Maybe Robyn will become a gigantic media icon and Greenday will open for him. I guess we'll see in > may... Clarification: only a few songs will have drums put on them (the singles) sounds like much of the record may just be Robyn and Deni. Weasel is an 'HFS DJ, so I think that tune was in the "Digital Spaceship" category. When he intro'd "De Chirico Street" he said he didn't know if it would be on the new record or not, so i gather the track listing is far from final. There certainly aren't 25 songs on Netsurfer Ghost, but then "Devil's Radio," "Trilobite" etc. surfaced after that, so, who knows? Does Robyn have a lot of songs that have never been played live? There are certainly quite a few songs I've never heard him do, but none that I could authoritatively say have never been done. doug (unsnowed in! yay! at work! boo....) ------------------------------ From: TPJSHEDS@aol.com Date: Mon, 8 Jan 1996 19:32:11 -0500 Subject: II Questions In regards to the high pitch piano on "Driving Aloud" Beth wrote : >I must take issue with the description of this sound as "highly >annoying." And, come to think of it, who is anyone to accept any of Robyn Hitchcock's aesthetic decisions as anything less than completely blissful ? Agreed. Sounds like we can look forward to an electric album, hopefully a push for some airplay (I'm laying early odds on "Devil's Radio"), a tour with a name artist [Van Halen perhaps? ;)] and lots of TV exposure. Best of all, no hard-to-find indy singles. - Russ. Today listening to nothing but Smashing Pumpkins. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jan 1996 10:31:17 -0500 (EST) From: ! They have a tradition of signing idiosyncratic musicians such as Randy Newman, Ry Cooder, and Van Dyke Parks, and letting them do what they want over long periods of time, even though their sales figures can't be very high. This might be because they are friends of Lenny Waronker (WB President), but hope- fully Robyn will get the same treatment. Of course the channels of distribution will be much expanded too. Hopefully things will work out well. (Then again, I thought A&M was headed for a golden age when they signed Robyn and Chris Stamey around the same time!). Agreed. Another case in point is O+>, the artist formerly known as prince. He has been a BIG disappointment for WB--they were expecting all his albums to do as well as Purple Rain. It would be fun to have Robyn appear onstage with "SLAVE" written on his face the way O+> did last year when he was having problems with WB :). .:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.: : John B.
