The real surprises to me are a) _Eye_ being so high up both the best and worst album lists, b) the very strong Best Album showing by _Queen Elvis_ and _A Can Of Bees_, and the fact that of the five Best Tracks, four were by the Soft Boys and the only other was from 1984 and c) _Element_'s poor showing. For the poll, I only accepted votes for bona fide SBs/RH albums, and not _Plutonium Express_ et al. Top five albums: 1) Underwater Moonlight 2) Fegmania! 3) Eye 4) A Can Of Bees 5) I Often Dream Of Trains Every one of the Soft Boys and Robyn's albums, save for Hen, Globe Of Frogs, Respect and 1976-81 had at least one vote for best album - including votes for Groovy Decay and Two Halves. _Queen Elvis_ was sixth, ahead of _Element_ and _BSDR_. There was much more unanimity in the vote for worst album, with Decay/Decoy and Queen Elvis miles ahead. The top five for worst album were: 1) Queen Elvis 2) Groovy Decay/Decoy 3) Perspex Island 4) Eye 5) Respect I assume that the non-showing of Two Halves is due to the fact that a number of people haven't got it, or don't consider it a 'real' album. The votes for best and worst track were, naturally, more divided, with most tracks getting only one or two votes. Again, the surprises are what didn't make it, and just how strong the Soft Boys' showing is. Best track: 1) Queen Of Eyes 2) I Want To Be An Anglepoise Lamp 3) Insanely Jealous 4) My Wife And My Dead Wife 5) Black Snake Diamond Rock Worst Track: 1) Wafflehead (By a huge margin) 2) Ultra Unbelievable Love 3) The Shapes Between Us Turn Into Animals 4) Lady Waters And The Hooded One 5) So You Think You're In Love There were also two votes for 'Anything with Michael Stipe'. As regards the question "How did 52 Stations make the top 10, although lyrically it's not great, musically (in some versions, particularly those with Andy - the Kershaw session version is a good example) it's beautifully constructed. As anyone anorak enough to check will know, in 1982 there were 47 stations on the Northern Line and there have never been more than 50. And the vocals for the covers on _Portland Arms_ are by Jim, as it says in large black letters on the sleeve. According to _Guinness_, the first song released to feature backward guitar as the main music, rather than as a spot effect, was _Dominoes_. And yes, I know issue 6 is late, but I've been off in foreignerland for two weeks and since geting back haven't been arsed to do the paste up. "The music is heavy, so let's have a bevvy, while Robyn acts good & weird"* Aidan *This _is_ a genuine lyric. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Dec 1995 14:06:35 -0800 (PST) From: Jonathan Naito To: Fegs Subject: Falling Leaves How does one get a copy of Falling Leaves? The songs that I had left over that ought to be on an album but wouldn't fit were compiled onto Falling Leaves... The problem with this theory is that (as I once read somewhere--sorry, it's 1.30 am and I'm not at a library, so I can't check the source--any physicists here?) the gravitational effects of the planets and the stars are approximately equal to that of an orange (or, one presumed, several pieces of toast having the same mass) being held five feet in front of you. As to the "studies" you've cited: no I haven't read them, but there would have to be a strong correlation, not merely a couple of anecdotal similarities. Pull together enough people and you're bound to find coincidences: someone on this list reading this message right now is thinking of the word "fish": am I right? Probably (I mean, besides myself as I typed it). Am I a psychic? Nope, sorry. While there does seem to be some evidence for the ffects of the moon on behavior, you can't simply extrapolate from there to astrology in general. And the argument that "the paranormal doesn't work under controlled conditions" suggests a convenient out, one that will always apply. Prove I'm not really a giant walking piece of cheese: well, no one else has ever *seen* me look like a giant walking piece of cheese, but that's because whenever I pass within human eyesight I turn back to looking like some guy in his early 30s. I mean, no, science can't prove everything, and there are serious problems when you claim "the scientific method" as some completely objective, be-all end-all type thing--but there's simply a hell of a lot more evidence that there's nothing to astrology than that there is. Oh yeah: someone on the list said they could guess signs well. So what am I? (and no hacking my system's database--that's cheating! The university *does* have that info on file...) --Jeff Jeffrey Norman "Can you write underwater University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on liquid paper?" Dept. of English & Comp. I'd agree that Revolver-era Beatles is probably where Robyn took his inspiration for backwards guitar technique. So not only does Robyn look like George Harrison but on occasion he plays like him too. :-) However, I don't agree that REM is doing Robyn. I don't know about "WTFK?" but I maintain the guitar part on "Crush With Eyeliner" is lifted directly from Love Battery's (neo-psychedelic Seattle band) "Between the Eyes". -Jason ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Dec 1995 19:49:18 GMT To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu From: redsfan@dircon.co.uk (Mark McKeown) Subject: Borderline Gig Skinny Dear all, My apologies if you already got this message.
