I only have a turntable and a tape player, and have avoided the CD market so far. If any of you have any vinyl you are looking to shed or know of any places I could envision you to visit for me I would appreciate it. I am looking for: RH albums- Invisible Hitchcock, Respect (available?), Gotta let this Hen out. Any RH singles or EP's (by the way, I remember long in my youth ago a friend showing me two RH coloured vinyl singles that she urged me to buy and I didn't. Any ideas?). Any Soft Boys paraphenalia. To clear things up, "Peace of Mind" is not a Beatles song, contains no Beatles, Badfingers or anyone connected to the band. It has long been thought to be an outtake fooling many people. It's a pretty neat song actually made by a bunch of people trying to make a fake Pink Floyd song. Maybe they should have covered it anyhow:-) Robyn Content:RH played Across the Universe when I saw him at JC Dobbs in Philly '91. yay! Oh, I don't know: I think I'd've agreed with you if it were 1981, but it is nearly (more than, now) 15 years later. It's not like they're actually reforming and recording a whole new album of dead Lennon tunes (I hope). That might be a bit more dicey. I think it's because I'm betting that, despite the hype the "new" song is getting, most people who buy the _Anthology_ discs will do so for the vintage, prev-unrlsd. material than for the "new" stuff. What's the word on that? this rumor started as a result of andy and robyn appearing for a few minutes together on andy kershaw's radio programme some years ago (the songs robyn performed at this session later became part of the kershaw sessions disc). andy offered to "twiddle knobs" for robyn. the comment appeared to have been tongue-in-cheek and since then, nothing, as far as i know, has come of it. the idea seems intriguing: andy handled the lilacs (or are they the lilac club? i can't recall) and martin newell fairly well. however, i feel that robyn is best left to produce himself. i think that, after all these years, he should be capable of making his sound himself. at this point in his career, he'd better. woj ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Nov 1995 19:11:38 -0500 (EST) From: Gary Assa To: Ross Overbury cc: The list that invented itself Subject: Re: Free as a Robyn (no Robyn content) Do you yhing some really cool plot is going on like this: There was all this hype about Free As A Bird, but the song that is the BIG ONE, is the one that will be played on Wednesday night. Haven't got the tracklisting to hand (the copy I have hasn't got a back cover as the running order hasn't been finalised, & I don't have time to listen to it as I'm about to go off). I remember that it _doesn't_ include 'Statue With A Walkman', 'Silver Wands' or 'Man With A Woman's Shadow', and _does_ feature an appalling take on Egyptian Cream on saxophone and piano. The cover is a line drawing (not a painting) of what looks suspiciously like the Silver Surfer coloured in black (but which I suspect is meant to be a demon or an elf) standing on a surfboard hovering in midair above clouds/snow with his arms outstrectched, flames coming from his fingers and lighting bolts flying in front of and behind him. It has "Before anything can happen they can crush me into nothingness" scrawled across the top. It's unusual but not particularly good as artwork (or as an album). A rough mix of much of it has been around for quite a while - at least a year - and was pencilled in as fifth in the series of bootleg CDs that began with _Stand Back Dennis_. n.b. further evidence that RH is getting very close to Julian Cope may well be evidenced by Cynthia's picture being on the cover of _Twenty Mothers_. I've got a tape of it, and it sounds fairly Beatleish to me--although the distortion (not intentional) is pretty serious, and the pitch gradually rises throughout 9an interesting effect--I hope). I thought I'd seen it mentioned in some Beatles book, but have been unable to locate it for sure--so I'm half believing you there. --Jeff Jeffrey Norman "I've been praying a lot lately-- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee it's because I no longer have a TV." On those Beatles influences, haven't we forgotten Arthur Alexander? Listen to his original version of 'Anna' and you'll hear where a big chunk of the early Beatles sound came from; I have also heard them covering his version of 'Soldier of Love'. He was black, though, so he didn't get the same publicity. Another big Beatles influence is the Shirelles, a girl group who did the original of 'Baby It's You'. That 'Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields' single is totally original, though, with McCartney writing the better song and Lennon creating the more outrageous one, as usual. - Mike ("Opinions - I got several of 'em") Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 1995 07:43:57 -0500 (EST) From: Terry Marks Subject: An assortment To: Pretty Girls and Anglepoise lamps What a Robyn-esque day yesterday. Lennon hadn't had a chance to edit himself and arrange the song more, and McCartney hadn't collaborated with him since 1970 (probably long before that, judging from the last few Beatles albums), so how did _he_ know what he wanted?
