This song would have been infinitely better (although MUCH more challenging) for fab 3 1/2 to record. In fact, it sounds like George is on the demo, which was multi-tracked. The guitar is Travis picked (read: Dear Prudence-like) with lyrics that have the roughly same acid content as "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". The quality of my copy is not astounding, although arguably better than the Lennon "Free as a Bird" demo, but since it is a studio effort, there is probably a decent master or maybe even a multi-track tape lying about. I found it tacky that they used "Free as a Bird" as the finale, with a _countdown_ yet! They might have done better to offer it more discretely, as an integral part of the program. Did they think that Beatles fans would turn off their TV sets once they had heard the song? If they have done stronger material, like "Peace of Mind", they might have released that song first. I lied about the Robyn content. A local paper printed an article about before any of this reunion stuff was out suggesting stand-in candidates for John in a reunited Beatles. Robyn was mentioned, but the writer wondered if the remaining Beatles could get into songs about fish. I've said enough. -- ROSS OVERBURY rosso@cn.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Nov 1995 17:10:09 +1200 To: The Glass Hotel From: james.dignan@stonebow.otago.ac.nz (James Dignan) Subject: More bloody beatles! the people were a-talkin' and what they said was that Jeff Lynne should never have produced the Free as a Bird single, and then they were saying different things about Robyn and others sounding like Johnno himself. I have two things to say. To understand the way Lynne hears the beatles, listen to ELO's "Can't get it out of my head" - is that the ghost of Lennon? and then their "21st century man" - is that the ghost of McCartney (well, he IS dead, ain't he?). And talking of 21st century (schizoid) men, if you want to know where the Beatles sound got people today, listen to "Walking on Air" of King Crimson's recent album Thrak. Robyn content!!! Have any of them become lawyers? Kimberley has a degree in Archaeology (a _Cambridge_ degree, too!), and helped Julian Cope with some of his archaeological books. Robyn began a degree in fine art at a dodgy college in Winchester but was thrown out/decided to leave depending on who one believes. Matthew Seligman can now (probably) claim to be the only practicing barrister to have played bass for Van Halen and David Bowie. Alan Davies is a conveyancing solicitor in Ely, about 30 miles north of Cambridge. Robyn never studied anything at Cambridge. He went to an extremely minor private (not public) school, which I can't remember the name off offhand (public school=upper class, private school=middle class, state school=lower class, for the benefit of Americans) 4) Robyn played all instruments except brass and bass on _IODOT_; James Fletcher played brass and Chris COx played bass and also did some vocals. 5) The Beatles were an artificial construct of musical vampires who ripped everything they did off somebody else, but got away with it because EMI spent a fortune on the PR to give them a ludicrously bloated reputation. Everything they ever did, Chuck Berry, the Kinks, the Beach Boys, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Little Richard or Elvis did earlier and usually better. EMI are attempting the exact same thing again with Blur (the music-buying public has a notoriously short memory; one review of the Kinks' 'Scattered' called it "a poor imitation of Blur"). Personally, I don't give a shit about George's "oh shit I'm bankrupt" reissues. Or Lady Diana's 'Exclusive Revelations'. 6) Negotiations are "well advanced" to release _Surfer Ghost_ on the Head Heritage (formerly Magog) label, owned by Julian Cope. Planned release date 19/2/96 barring hiccups. Having got the album, it sounds pretty terrible, I have to say, rather like a bootleg that's had all the applause etc wiped off; as well as the new tracks, it features 'reworkings' of older tracks. It's also had all trace of Sean thoughtfully edited off. It also has a *very* naff cover. Phone/write to Sincere or Head Heritage for more info, not me, as that's all I know. Morris popped up on the last Monochrome Set album, and Kimberley's new album is out now on Polydor. replies to any of this will only be read if they're from subscribers or people i know - oh, you know the drill by now Aidan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Nov 1995 10:19:51 +0000 (GMT) From: M R Godwin To: An ironing board in the Sahara Subject: Piano I have always assumed that RH plays the piano on It Sounds Great When You're Dead. After working with Deni on new, violin-ized, versions of such old songs as Egyptian Cream, and Never Stop Bleeding, Robyn must've thought that they merited showcasing on his new album. I feel that this kind of stuff has its place as part of a live show, but why waste valuable space on a compact disc with old songs we've heard and own on other CDs???? Netsurfer Ghost is 60 min long (and with the new songs from recent tour it is 85min long!) which means that some of these songs get dumped. And what about Lobsterman?? IMNSHO, what Leckie did for the the Dukes Of Stratosphear is the *best* neo-retro recording and engineering I've ever heard. I'd love to see Robyn record with Daniel Lanois. Having spent time in Lanois' house/studio/castle in New Orleans, the *amazing* vibe of that place is perfect for Robyn, with or without the Egyptians. Lanois is very good at recording just singers with guitars, too. Roger Eno would be cool, too. I think he has an amazing feel for sound and tone, and he'd really be able to get a lot out of Robyn's music and guitar playing. (Sure, his brother Brian could do that, too, but I'm sure he's way too expensive. Besides, you prolly couldn't pull him away from the Bono Bunch). Hmm, wonder why noone at those labels who release stuff by other guitarists like John Renbourne and Michael Hedges (Windham Hill, ECM, etc.) haven't approached Robyn? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Nov 1995 13:27:12 -0500 (EST) From: Bayard To: glass frogs Subject: feg romance & surfer ghost while erasing all the leftover, personals-like feg demographics messages from my overflowing inbox, i wondered: have any two people gotten together as a result of subscribing to fegmaniax? not to be nosy, but it seems like it could happen. also: aidan sir, I'm certain a track listing of surfer ghost would be most appreciated when you get back. also what does the cover look like.
