Because there's such a variety of artists in the poll, it serves little good. If everyone can tolerate the exercise one more time, let's do top 10s so we can rank our favorites by points. THAT would be interesting. If y'all'll (how about that for a contraction?) send lists to me at zerosummer@aol.com (as not to clutter the list) before December 1, I'll do the tabulations, as I find this sort of thing entertaining. (Will you let me, Terry?) Thanks. --Joe P.S. Please don't indulge in ranking the more obscure stuff higher for the sake of the final tabs. Honesty, honesty! =) And only ten, please. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 1995 22:16:30 -0600 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu From: gshell@metronet.com (Greg Shell) Regarding "That Poll" OK, I did not read the FORMAT notes and thought a blank meant no vote. I have always called Black Francis,,,, Black Francis... I looked for Van Morrison under Morrison Pete Townsend was The Who Keith Moon was one of greatest drummers of all time, but I don't believe he wrote any music for The Who John Entwistle is one of the finest bass players alive, but he did little as far composing songs for The Who Roger Daltrey is JUST a singer, who's voice I do not much appreciate. He has attempted to write some songs but I rank them as barely worthy attempts. The Who was and always will be a result of Pete Townsend, and I think he has written just as many magnificent songs since The Who disbanded. Also, I think you missed Segovia. Well that's my 9 cents. Please be sure to rank your artists one through ten, OK? Otherwise, I'll go by the order in which you list them. Also, anything after 10 will be discarded (yeah, it was tough for me too). On the previous freestyle poll, I suppose anyone could vote for 35 or so artists, and it kind of weights the thing wrong. Terry: Please forward any top tens you might get from this point on to me. I've already gotten a bunch. Thanks, everyone. --Joe ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Nov 1995 09:57:50 -0600 (CST) From: JAY LYALL Subject: Right, well, I'm off... I'm not 100% on all of the fingerings, but the fingering for the F#7 is as follows: E:2 A:4 D:2 G:3 B:0 E:0 The picking pattern from low E to high E and back should jump right out at you once you make this chord. Now, I watched Robyn play this song at Berbati's Pan in September and it was in F#7. When he got to the "Into the bureau she rambled" section, he went higher on the neck and did his own open E [E:0 A:7 D:9 G:9 B:0 E:0] and then used a barred [second position] Eb [D#]. Since I have so many responses in the first day, I am going to say the deadline is midnight after Thanksgiving, not December 1. Fegs are admirably enthusiastic about self-indulgent stuff like this. My kind of people. I'm going to try to avoid combining artists and their bands in one tally. For instance, John Cale (and even Lou Reed) merits separate billing from VU for a distinctive solo career. Ditto for members of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc., even the Pixies, as far as I'm concerned. Exceptions are the Kinks/Mr. Davies, Talking Heads/Mr. Byrne, & the Church/Mr. Kilbey, only 'cause people sometimes vote for those three just like that, with a charming little slash. I say this to let you know that you can put John, Paul, George and Ringo in your top four if that turns you on, and each will count separately. That doesn't mean I'm looking to count the name of, say, all eight major Pogues, but you get the idea. Here's to happy polling. --Joe (the unimaginable Zero Summer) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Nov 95 19:26:12 CST From: Bram Tchaikovsky To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Village Green Preservation (and a word about polls) Zero Summer informs us that some people vote for Talking Heads/David Byrne, Kinks/Ray Davies, etc. (and as one who did that, I can only thank you on behalf of my slashes, who do try their best to be charming :)). I voted for Kinks/Ray Davies because I wished to acknowledge that although Ray Davies could not be considered to have a distinctive career outside of his Kinks association, I nonetheless consider him the genius responsible for all those lovely tunes and the sensibility that infused the music as a whole. I think that is what others meant to do as well with their slashing. It's a small distinction, but one worth making. Susan P.S. I for one LOVE voting in music opinion polls. It's one of the few tasks presented to me in this life that I am actually well-qualified for :). Keep 'em coming.
