Very odd. i think the version that ended up on _alvin lives in leeds [anti poll tax trax]_ was recorded about the time of _eye_, and it seems it was considered for inclusion on the album but did not make it (this is probably wise, as andy's vocal "bass" playing, and the squawks, don't fit too well with the mood of _eye_. _i_ think. ------------------------------ To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Re: Sincere management well acquainted with live shows Date: Mon, 13 Nov 1995 22:42:24 -0500 From: "Thomas Narten" > I was just thinking today----at many of Robyn's shows, he says "if you get > a good tape of that, you could send it to the management." > > In fact, he even told ME directly after one of his shows to send a show I > had to the managment, and offered a card with the address on it. > > my guess (with help from last fall's ICE article) is that they want to > archive them for possible use in making a CD of "the ultimate live show". > Jim Neill (the guy from Rhino who helped out with the reissues) was quoted > as saying something like that in that ICE article. This is a really silly thing for robyn to be saying; he's not serious. I don't know why he would say this. There is no way he would ever release an audience tape out on disc/tape. The quality isn't good enough. What label would do it? Also, robyn could easily tape (on DAT) every single show if he wanted. He apparently doesn't, which disappoints me. :-) An industrial-strength portable DAT machine would run no more than $2K, and tapes are only another few $$ per night. He certainly has that kind of money, me thinks. And just think of the next 'you & oblivion' he could release if he were taping every show... I just found a basic theme of the song and plan on finding the rest. Some of the E-barre chords may be A-barre chords and vice versa. 2) "Filthy Bird" is now back on the untabbed list. I no longer have any faith in my transcription of it. I am unable to tell how serious Robyn is. I have audience DAT tape of Robyn where, in the beginning, he must spot someone with a tape recorder. He then says in to the microphone, "I don't mind him taping the show. In fact, I'd like a copy...especially if it's a good one." He was a bassist known in the forties primarily for his silly novelty tunes such as the above (another one I like is "Who Put The Benzedrine in Mrs. Murphy's Ovaltine?"). I haven't heard Robyn's recordings of any of these, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear him cover one :). By the way, I vote for "She's the Jeanne Moreau type" because I think it makes more sense in the song's context although the pronounciation does sound strangely like Murrow and Miro is certainly possible; perhaps it's deliberately slurred to give people like us something to do :). I am reminded here of a friend who insists that when Quinn the Eskimo gets here, everybody's gonna wanna dose. Having had a landlord named Mr. Quinn who was a right talker, I always thought that everyone wanted to doze upon Mr. Quinn's arrival :). 'Senor Senor' is I think a Dylan original (if you listen to RH's intonation during it, then there may be a clue in that...). As for Silly Wizard, synchronicitously I noticed their name for the first time a couple of days back, thumbing through the Rolling Stone Album Guide looking for Jane Siberry albums. It described them as being: "Masters of classic Scottish folk, this quartet turns out trad fare and original tunes that make the most of Phil Cunningham's fleet-fingered accordion work and Andy Stewart's high, strong voice. Occasionally they'll augment their banjo and guitar energy with synthesised string ensembles and electric piano, but their sound remains direct and uncluttered; they achieve a fierce loveliness. Consistently expert in its choice of material, Silly Wizard hasn't made a bad album: 'Wild and Beautiful' and 'So Many Partings' may be the best, but all the discs feature highland delights. (on a star system going from 1 to 5, SMP and W&B rate 3 1/2 stars, as does 'The Best of...'; 'Kiss the Tears Away' and 'Caledonia's Hardy Sons' rate 3 stars each.) BTW - can anyone tell me about a guy called Wazmo Nariz? What it had to say about him in the RSAG sounded vaguely Hitchcock-y... James James Dignan, Department of Psychology, University of Otago.
