When I first heard this story, lo those many years ago, the deal was that Robyn was _boarding_ his cats at the CPL; Peter was trying to adopt one simultaneously. Robyn entrusted his cats to Peter. As he put it the first time I heard about this, when he got them back none of them had been "damaged beyond repair," so Peter and Robyn became friends. I've always thought that this version is consistent enough (allowing for Robyn's off-the-cuff weirdness with interviewers) with later reports to be fairly close to whatever really happened, but I suppose we shall never really know the truth of it. P'raps Robyn, Peter, and indeed all of the Egyptians and REM, are members of a satanic cult who summon demons by means of the ritual torture of (mostly) innocent and (comparitively) defenseless felines, and bonded instantly upon realizing this. doug > >(written with kikko on my lap, yoshi and elly curled up at the foot of my > >bed, and mizu on the pillow) > (Written with Tara desperately trying to stop me typing) Written with Max out of the room ------------------------------ From: jimm@dbu.edu Date: Thu, 2 Nov 95 17:03:00 -0600 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Pets I've got a lovely idea for Robyn's pet. I hate to spoil the fun, but I ought to point out that the review in question was in fact embarassingly fawning; it was a track-by-track job in which only two tracks weren't ludicrously (looking back) overpraised ('Railway Shoes' and 'Then You're Dust', if you're wondering). A few pages later was a live review of the _Respect_ tour, which included the line "perhaps the greatest live performance I've ever heard - he can do no wrong ... one of the best performances I've ever seen". For some reason, I am in disbelief. I have never met ANYONE!!! that is fan of Robyn Hitchcock. It's nice to know that the world isn't so big after all. michael ps. the video compilation masters are finished except I am waiting for tapes containing the Conan Obrien show and the first David Letterman. One of them, "Gun," had "I Wanna Destroy You" as the B-side. Has anyone heard this? I haven't heard much Uncle Tupelo, but their offshoot band Wilco sounds pretty good, in a Replacements sort of way... Again voting closes on the 30th...and I will be gone from 18th to the 27th so if you have any question ask me before then or you'll have to find me in Edinburgh and buy me a whiskey to get an answer... jay %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Jay Lyall "Capy Toad Blast" "If you could free my inner child hist1a@jetson.uh.edu Then I could free your inhabitions." Wilco is a good band, and apparently Son Volt, the other offshoot, is very very good, but Uncle Tupelo was AMAZING. I know someone who had a compilation of Uncle Tupelo's B-sides, but we're not in contact anymore and he's not on the Net. I never heard the version of "I Wanna Destroy You", but if it's as good as their cover of CCR's "Effigy" on NO ALTERNATIVE, then don't miss it! Their sound is sort of a combination of Replacements/Husker Du (later period) and country/folk. Suffice it to say that if you EVER see this 45 anywhere, GET IT. "Gun" is one of Uncle Tupelo's best songs (from STILL FEEL GONE), and I'd be willing to bet that "I Wanna Destroy You" in their hands would be pretty amazing. The deadline has been extended indefinitely. Since new blood seems to surge into the list regularly, I'll belabor the point periodically. Glass Flesh is the never-ending fan-tribute to robyn. From the feedback I've received, the first 2 tapes were pretty much a great success. At some point there will be a CD made with the best 74 minutes of music from volumes 1, 2 and part of 3. Right now Meat Ruiner's "Love" and Kevin Slick's "Brenda's Iron Sledge" are early favorites to make it on. Keep telling me which you like best and I'll decide the rest somehow. Also of interest is the "Gloss Fish" tape which will contain original compositions by "Glass Flesh" contributors. Contact terry marks (somewhere in florida) for details. BTW... since S. "The Freshmaker" Dodge was kind enough to mention him... I'm doing this for Jonathan Richman as well. :) bayard ------------------------------ Date: 03 Nov 95 17:50:17 EST From: Aidan Merritt <101356.2516@compuserve.com> To: Fegmaniax Subject: Re: The Cats Protection League The Cats Protection League: It's a vets surgery for people who can't afford vets fees. This was in 1985, when all Robyn's money had gone into _Fegmania_ and Midnight Music (both commercial disasters at the time, remember). I think he was just having it vaccinated. As far as I know, the cat ran away when he moved to the Isle of Wight. My father still has one of its kittens. (He sneaked in and had it away with the extremely expensive pedigree cat across the road to me, to the great annoyance of its owners. They were seriously talking about where you could get cat abortions. Everyone on Cyprus Road who didn't have the heart to say 'no' wound up with a kitten.) And honest, the ambulance does exist and does have a very loud siren. They also have an exceedingly annoying poster which gets wheeled out every year around this time (Christmas is coming/We'll soon get fat/Won't you spare a thought/For the poor old cats/Locked out in the rain/Alone and fatigued/Someone cares/It's the Cats Protection League). They're based in East Grinstead, while we're at it.
