This has the makings of a write-only thread, but there's nothing we enjoy more than spilling our souls to fellow fegheads. And so ... Name: David Librik Where I am: Berkeley, California, now in my Nth year as a second year grad student, this time in Linguistics. Where I was: brought up and went to college in central Illinois, in the heart of the Midwest. What I used to do: a lot of Microsoft Space Simulator is my fault. How old I am: 28 How old I think I am: 20 (Eight years ago those two numbers were reversed) Date of my discovery of Robyn: early 1986 Route of infection: Through the Move, the Kinks, and other late-60s bands I liked in high school, I got into Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd and Syd himself. I came to college in 1985 with Syd as my favorite musician, but there's only so far you can go with two really great solo albums. I met a girl named Kate who liked Syd as well, and in response to the inevitable question of similar bands, she told me the usual answer was "Robyn Hitchcock." He had played in town (Champaign, Illinois) a few months earlier and I had no trouble locating a greatest hits album called "The Man Who Invented Himself." I was electrified by about half of it and bored by the other half, but there was no question that "Brenda's Iron Sledge," "Acid Bird," and "This Could Be The Day" were deeply Sydlike. Suddenly, I could indulge my love of catchy Sixties pop rock AND appear to be in with the cool alternative music scene! My First Robyn Concert: Champaign, April 8, 1988. I dragged my girlfriend and some hip musical acquaintances to one of Robyn's more chatty and involved shows. They all laughed as I sang breathlessly along to every one of his songs. Then I laughed when he started "Balloon Man" and everyone around me said, "oh! that's who this guy is!" Fave Robyn material: the catchy rock stuff and the silly stuff. Underwater Moonlight and Invisible Hits, Black Snake, Globe of Frogs, Invisible Hitchcock, Trains, Eaten By Her Own Dinner Other bands that make me happy in a way similar to Robyn: Liz Phair, The Pogues and the related Celt-o-punk scene (Oyster Band, Saw Doctors, etc.), older They Might Be Giants, Steeleye Span, Adam Schmitt, R.E.M., Roy Wood. I agree that his production on those two albums is nothing exciting, but his work on Victoria Williams last on was amazing! Pat Collier is an interesting choice-- he's good at that catchy folk/pop thing-- it would be neat to hear. I would absolutely love to hear a Scott Litt produced Hitchcock album, though! I think since Robyn's not using the Egyptians it would be important for the producer to be someone who can bring out some different things in his music. Again, I'd like to see an encouragement of the folkier acoustic leanings. babbling Bradley ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Oct 1995 14:01:26 -0400 (EDT) From: glancaster@mecn.mass.edu Subject: ladies whatever To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu i vote against the ladies only weekend idea! ------------------------------ From: bing@student.umass.edu Date: Thu, 26 Oct 1995 14:04:33 -0400 Subject: Re: The Ladies Auxillary To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu I wanna talk about that stuff, too.... I am extremely baffled by this. I'm a woman, and I'm gay, and I post on this list all the time without hassle. Since the list restarted in January there've been only two incidents of flaming - one I think might have been personal mail that was sent to the list by mistake, and one was a clash of individual personalities.
