Jones) Subject: Robyn at Mercury Lounge, Friday Oct 6 Cc: lgaylord@iww.org I can't believe no one has reviewed or mentioned this show. Not that it was unique or anything--the setlist looks much like the other ones from this tour that people were kind enough to post to the list. Actually, from what I heard, the Thurs Mercury show was the one to go to: REM were in town, and Mssrs Buck and Mills and the pope showed up to catch Robyn's set. A cool surprise was an extra opening act in the form of Chris Stamey. Having worked at a record store, I knew alot OF him, but had never heard HIS music. It was nice. Solo acoustic. Deni Bonet and her band opened this show, the only one of the tour. She has a new drummer and guitar player, and some new hooky songs. They are getting better and better. Then, Robyn! He had the colored shirt with geometric designs on it I think. He mentioned that he didn't get to the cleaners in time and so he had to wear the same shirt 2 nights in a row. He added that when the time comes to do a RETRospective tour that he will have copies made of his old shirts made and he will lose 20lbs for playing the early material, and for the newer stuff he will gain the weight back and play with white hair and newer shirts. Acoustic: Surgery Lysander (!!!) Cool Bug Rumble Trilobyte then with Deni-- Egyptian Cream De chirico ST. Statue w/a Walkman Filthy Bird then: Chinese Bones After which he got out the electric guitar and introduced a "new" song: You & Oblivion Then he said, humbly, "Now I'm going to play some old Soft Boys songs". The crowd went wild, causing Robyn to break into a smile. Queen of Eyes Only The Stones Remain (a slower, funkier version than usual) Kingdom of Love (!!!) Shirt-change, then the encore: Acoustic: Devil's Radio Then back on electric for: I Am Not Me I Got A Message (I pictured Woj screaming "Nooooooo!" into my tape deck) And the show ended with 3 numbers with Deni on violin Never Stop Bleeding She Was Sinister but She Was Happy Beautiful Queen That was it. I loved the setlist because I was really sick of last tour's setlist set up (i.e., main set ends with Yip Song, encore begins with I am NOT me and ends with Higsons or Only Stones Remain) and alot of the songs (My Wife & My DEad Wife, Driving Aloud, Yip Song, I Something You). It was nice to hear him playing old stuff that I've never heard him do solo (especially Lysander). At the same time, I noticed that the setlist is the basically the same as some of the other shows from this tour and I feel that this is lamentable. It used to be that Robyn would just come up with a list of songs he wanted to play right before he would go on and even add to it once he was up there. The 1990 Eye solo acoustic tour was an example of this. I think the fact that he has a particular way of ordering the songs now shows that he thinks of himself more as an entertainer than a rock and roll musician and is trying to come up with a pleasing setlist--one that flows well. He is mapping the show out, much like record execs map out the track order of albums. This is what I DON"T like about the recent shows. One of the reasons I got into Robyn was the fact that no 2 shows of his were ever the same--he always told different stories, and always changed the setlist around, and played more covers and odd songs. There is not as much of this anymore. Boo hoo. That is my only bitch I'm going to make. As shows go (and I've seen 6 in the past year) (its either feast or famine) it is right up there as one of the best. Now I am done. I did tape the show as well as the opening acts, and am up for some trades. Get in touch and we can make some arrangements. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- John B. As of this date I have acquired some very interesting material. Some of it exceeds my expectations. Please email me if you have an interesting video of a live show, a TV broadcast etc.. I would like to ask if any of you are artistic, and would you mind designing a pencil rendition of RH for the cover? I don't have a color printer, but maybe I could access one if needed. Please let me know privately which songs you feel should (or should not) be included. Also, if those of you who are currently working on new covers can get them to me in the next couple of weeks, I can consider them for inclusion. Unless I can justify printing 1000 cd's (that is, if Mushy wants to buy about 950 of them b/c I can't see more than 50 or less people on this list wanting to buy one) there will be an extremely limited run, probably 20. They will be made available first to the contributors, and if there are any left, the list at large. They will be sold at cost + postage + royalties to robyn. Big thanks to Tom Clark for offering his time and CD burner. Obviously only one song per individual will make it on. I'm thinking: probably KoLove over BISledge or SNoJesus IWDY over IJ (?) Trash over underwater moonlight not sure which of Nismo's should go on. Higsons over mw&mdw I'm definitely including Vic's piece and one by yammer-jooks. Neither of the songs i contributed to will be included, nor will the voicemail message (which got butchered by SCMS.) Anyway, this is an incentive to get those tapes in the mail. I'll make the deadline Halloween. Remember, only 74 minutes can fit on the CD, so don't feel bad if you don't get on-- you'll still be represented in tape volume 3. bayard ------------------------------ From: jimm@dbu.edu Date: Tue, 10 Oct 95 15:18:00 -0500 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Re: Finding Robyn stuff in Texas >Date: 10-Oct-95 13:25 >From: BEDBUGS @ INTERNET (Brooks Martin) {bedbugs@elwha.evergreen.edu} >To: JIMM@DBU (Jim Moore) >Subject: Re: Finding Robyn stuff in Texas >You wrote: >I don't like being treated like a criminal as I shop--and so I don't go >there >anymore. I must admit that I don't listen to it much these days simply because I have heard all of those songs (except Homer and the Banana Boat song) so many times already... but the "new" versions are excellent. I believe that the 1st and last tracks (Brenda's Iron Sledge and Heaven) are the exact same live cuts from the Gotta Let this Hen Out LP. But besides that I think there are some excellent versions of some of the Egyptians material here. I especially like the acoustic versions of "Arms of Love", "Oceanside", "So You Think..." and "Perspex". I think I tend to like them better than the album versions... I also like the "Veins" and "Mandala" versions on Kershaw better... ======================================================================= Mike wrote: >From the first RH record I bought, the variability of quality on most of >his releases has bothered me. When I first pick up a new RH CD or album there are always some "forgettable" tracks--always. Examples for me would be "Moon Inside" from Respect or "Child of the Universe" from Perspex. But then it always happens that even the songs that I don't like as much seem to grow on me after a few listens. For instance, I used to hate "The Fly" from Fegmania! -- but now I rather like it. In fact, I think I like every song from Fegmania! now--but when I bought the Glass Fish CD (I've recently traded it in for the Rhino version) back in '88 or '89 I only liked about half of it. I think even the "inferior" tunes have their merit--even the songs from You & Oblivion that some of you folks out there don't like too much. Again, I'd much rather have ALL the stuff than just the superb and magical songs and nothing else--but then again, I love Robyn's work more than just about any other musician or artist... Couple of questions.... Where can I find (or CAN I find) CD versions of: Dark Green Energy DeChirico Street Trilobite Song PS: Just to let all the list subscribers know--I think this is an excellent list full of extremely nice and bright people. I was on a Peter Gabriel list for awhile--and it was mostly a bunch of people butting heads. Everyone here has been very helpful, not the least bit sarcastic in a rude way, and quite friendly!
