It's a lot easier to record a great version of someone else's song than to come up with a great song of your own (and put out a great version of it to boot). >He used the analogy of filming to describe putting an album together >and said he ended up with songs "on the cutting room floor" which >became 'you & oblivion.' Perhaps a song just didn't fit in with the album at the time. Take 'Allright yeah' for instance. Not a bad song (I particularly like the acoustic egyptians version they did on Modern Rock Live during the PI tour). At one point Robyn was asked why it didn't make it onto Respect. His answer was that it was only "allright", but not great, or something like that. But he still seems to be playing it now. I'm confused. By your definition, this song is second-rate. Why then does he play it? >Sure, there are good moments, but *by definition* not one track on >either of these records matches anything on 'respect,' 'perspex >island' or any of the egyptians records. They live their lives on the tree. Then they die and leave the tree for the afterlife on the ground. The leaf afterlife--the "afterleaf"--would begin in autumn. Hence, "spring into autumn". Usually Ryko is not quiet Why the whining about the re-releases? I thought they were well put together: containing all of the original album, hard to find rarities from the corresponding period and insightful sleeve notes featuring RObyn's thoughts on the album/songs/period. A lot of the original albums were still very difficult to get hold of before these re-releases so I am very thankful that I was able to complete my Hitchcock collection through these re-releases. I also bought some of the albums which I already had on vinyl because of the generous allocation of bonus tracks. (And these can be easily programmed out if someone wants to hear the album in its original form - I thought the sleeve notes (aside from A Can of Bees) made it quite clear which songs were on the original album). Surely you own all of these albums already so a box set would just be an expensive duplication of songs you largely already own. My complaint is that the 1976-1981 double CD collection tried to be both an introduction to Robyn's music at the same time as being a rarities collection. As a consequence it did not succeed on either front. If I was going to introduce the music of the Soft Boys then I would use this collection to do so. On the other hand, I found the CD a bit of a rip-off because it was padded with the released versions of songs I already own and therefore did not have room for the great many original Soft Boys songs which have never been released. And surely unreleased Hitchcock songs are going to be of more interest to most fans than live versions of released songs. The complilation did seem largely a waste of two CD's given what is still in the can. The collection did have a great booklet though. Thanks for some interesting email on this subject. I had begun a point-by-point person-by-person response, but it was going to end up so LONG....so here's the brief version. Basically I will always consider Robyn's 'broad canvas' egyptians stuff preferable to his solo 'doodles'. That's just my taste. There are many "doodles" I really like though, and I wouldn't like to argue the relative merits of the two broad styles to the point where battle lines get drawn and I end up as spokesperson for any anti-solo-robyn cause. I think this partly because of the convincing and well-argued case-for-the-defence mustered up by: Blatzman & Thomas Narten for pointing out that good songs can be rejected because they don't 'fit,' though I'd argue that these would be the ones worthy of putting on a compilation: I suppose my point is that some should *stay* on the cutting room floor. Mike Hardaker & Bradley for pointing out that both sides (if there are "two sides" that is) are important in a true appraisal of RH as an artist Thanks to Jim Davies for "Well, I like about half of what you've said, and the other half is garbage :+) " and "wooden hippopotamus of quality control" both of which I liked a lot. Woj also said good things. I got to say to Thomas Narten that , having thought about it, yes, I *am* saying there's nothing on 'eye' or 'y.a.o' to match the worst songs on 'respect' or 'perspex island.' Mainly because I can't think of a track I don't seriously love on either of these albums - except (you guessed it) 'Wafflehead' which (while funny the first couple of times) should, I reckon, have been long since devoured by the cutting room trashcan. If this makes me lose credibility as a Robyn fan in your eyes, I'll just have to live with it.... I was a student at his alma mater (Dartmouth College) at the time, where a 24-hour read-a-thon was performed in his memory the weekend after he died. I remember dropping by to listen several times that day and until about 3 o'clock that night. There was quite a large group with sleeping bags ready to keep it going until the next day. The whole thing was completed when the college president read "Green Eggs and Ham" to the crowd before the fotball game. I think it must have been the autumn of 1991 (or 92?) Personally, I don't like being treated like a criminal as I shop--and so I don't go there anymore. And it's not as if I am a shady-looking character. I am very clean cut and honest-looking. I'm a seminary student for Pete's sake! Yes, the pricing thing at Bill's is strange, too. He will charge you $20.00 for just about any CD--which is ridiculous when compared to Best Buy's price of $12 (and they are now carrying all the Rhino re-releases of Robyn's stuff). Two good reasons to avoid Bill's in Dallas! It did not have a listing of tracks--and I was wondering if anyone on this list has this particular CD and could share with me what's on it. If I learn that I have everything that's on it already--I can cancel my order within a day or two... There are 10 tracks I think. I guess it's like the cd version of the six-song "tell your friends" cassette, but given to record stores instead of prospective fans. ------------------------------ From: jimm@dbu.edu Date: Mon, 9 Oct 95 15:19:49 -0500 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: RE: Ultraunbelievablecolors and darkGreenenergy >Date: 4-Oct-95 15:30:27 -0500 >From: CBRADY @ INTERNET (cbrady) {cbrady@mail.millikin.edu} >To: FEGMANIA {fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu} >Reply-to: CBRADY @ INTERNET {cbrady@mail.millikin.edu} >Subject: Ultraunbelievablecolors. >Message-ID: EB70763001D75AD9 >O-SMTP-Envelope-From: >Via-host: ADMIN1.DBU > > > I have the "uul" single with dark green energy on pressed on > translucent purple vinyl...does anyone else out there have a > different color??? Haven't heard "Dark Green Energy"... is it a cool tune? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Oct 1995 17:16:26 -0400 (EDT) From: daramsey@vaxsar.vassar.edu (d. ramsey) Subject: Speaking of colored vinyl... To: Fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu there's also the 'Flesh Number One' promo blue vinyl 12" w/ 'Legalized Murder' on the back, and the 'Balloon Man' green vinyl 12" w/ 'Ghost Ship' on the back. And those Soft Boys boot 7"s, '1980 Rehearsals' and the other one I forget, are on red and blue vinyl. daveR. [][][][][][][][] End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
