OK, first of all, we all have our own taste and look for different things in a record (and so on). Before I explain why I don't like most of the solo acoustic stuff on 'eye' and 'y.a.o' I want to say that the worst tracks on these albums are still Robyn and Robyn's crap is better than most people's best. (er...yeah.) For me, 'eye' and 'y.a.o' only show a limited aspect of Robyn's work: if you were to introduce his music to a friend who had never heard of him, my guess is you'd start with one of the classic egyptians albums. In these records we hit upon Robyns biggest talent - arrangement, the grand design. He excels at the broad canvas. In my opinion, he's the first songwriter since Lennon/McCartney to truly make something of the bass/drums/keyboard/guitar (plus occasional strings and brass) formula, and let's face it, there's enough people (including myself) trying to achieve that and not even coming close. This is, for me, what makes him special, and this is missing from the two albums in question. On 'eye' and 'y.a.o' we have Robyn-the-lyricist and Robyn-the-guitarist (in a limited way) but not Robyn-the-constructor-of-unbelievably-great-pop-music. The above can be ascribed to preference - but there's another aspect. I heard an interview with him on UK radio, it was on an arts programme, he was a guest along with some film director. He used the analogy of filming to describe putting an album together and said he ended up with songs "on the cutting room floor" which became 'you & oblivion.' This means they weren't considered good enough for the albums in question. In his own terms, and perhaps those of the egyptians, these are second-rate songs. To me, that's just how they sound. Sure, there are good moments, but *by definition* not one track on either of these records matches anything on 'respect,' 'perspex island' or any of the egyptians records. To paraphrase: Your perfect song is never there, and if it was, it wouldn't be. For me, 'eye' and 'y.a.o' are not inspiring, they're *interesting*.The best analogy I can come up with to explain myself is art. If "Arthur Lee" is the Mona Lisa, "Clean Steve" is a doodle. True, Leonardo da Vinci doodled helicopters, and some of Robyn's doodles achieve a kind of musical helicopterness (Cynthia Mask perhaps). But black & white doodles they are: I have to imagine them coloured in. On a total personal-opinion level, I gotta say that the quality of the songs on 'eye' (especially) is pretty low by Robyn's standards. Many are overlong, too repetitive, too moansome, too throwaway. I ended up making a tape of the best bits, my tape consists of: Cynthia Mask, Queen Elvis, Chinese Water Python, Executioner, College of Ice, Beautiful Girl, Raining Twilight and Glass Hotel. The rest (and there's far too many) couldn't take repeated listenings. Even in its edited-highlights form, it's my least favourite album. "You and Oblivion" is better, but I also felt the need to edit out the bits that irritated me. I reckon if you combined the good bits from both albums you'd have something worthy of release. You say acoustic Robyn is the 'real deal.' I take this to mean that Robyn alone, stripped of all elaboration, shows us the 'true' artist. To be honest, if this is the case, I don't take much joy in analysing his 'true' nature - sure it's interesting, we all want to know what makes our favourite artists 'tick' but for me the 'real deal' will always be the egyptians stuff, the 'grand design'. I truly believe that even the best artists benefit from collaboration: to bring up Lennon/McCartney again, though they had great post-Beatles moments, they never matched 'Revolver' or "Sgt Peppers" did they? I fear that without the egyptians we won't see Robyn's 'real deal' again - though I hope to be proved wrong. I know this is already an overlong posting, but one more point, which I'm afraid is neither well defined or argued (maybe if anyone agrees with me they can try and put it into better words). There is something that makes me uncomfortable about Robyn releasing 'doodles' (and Julian Cope performing doodles). It kind of implies an inflated ego at work, a sort of self-importance, kind of - "hey, I doodle helicopters, and I don't even need to colour them in." I can't think up a better way to describe this, or why it bothers me, but it does. Anyway, I should be working. The first album I give them is always Respect-- after that I usually go to some of the acoustic material before getting into the "classic" Egyptian albums (the term frightens me because I feel that Robyn is constantly improving, and I can't stand the idea of focusing on earlier work as some sort of standard-- he's not an oldies act, know what I mean?) You and Oblivion, in general, really works well because it covers an incredible amount of ground and lets Robyn's talents come through without the distortions of studio production-- and Robyn, I feel, has often suffered from the "distortions" of production (although the albums are not any less enjoable.) In the end, I would say that it's a two punch combo-- you've got to show both sides, really, to get a clear picture of Robyn's talent. just ramblin', Bradley ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Oct 1995 09:13:08 -0500 (CDT) From: JAY LYALL Subject: Re: Underwater Bonus tracks To: RREYNOLD@ksjo.com Cc: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu >American Gothic and the Mona Lisa are both fine paintings, but do you really >think think the Mona Lisa would still be considered a masterpiece if some >marketing guy added a husband with a pitchfork? > Isn't that called Dada? jay %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Jay Lyall "Capy Toad Blast" "If you could free my inner child hist1a@jetson.uh.edu Then I could free your inhabitions." I was intrigued to see that he was wearing the same shirt that he wore about 6 months ago when I saw him in Boston in the spring...anyways, the show last night was basically similar to the shows last spring, though he played some songs I'd never heard before: Trilobite, Cool Bug Rumble, You and Oblivion, Devil's Radio... Of the above, Trilobite was damn funny and cool, Cool Bug Rumble had an odd sexual undercurrent to it and was okay, You and Oblivion was very very nice, though after a bit it tread that fine line of almost becoming a bit boring, and Devil's Radio was a very pleasantly melodic rock song. Along with these songs he played (in no particular order): DeChirico Street, Kingdom of Love, Queen of Eyes, Glass Hotel (which was amazing), I'm Only You (with a guitar solo at the end which absolutely blew me away!), Raymond Chandler Evening (with an interesting aside about the OJ case...Robyn gave the hint that the song, at least for last night's gig, was about OJ), and there was some other stuff, oh yeah, Statue With a Walkman, Serpent @ the Gates of Wisdom, umm...well that's all I remember. And there were two t-shirts for sale: one had a cartoon panel depicting part of DeChirico Street with some of the lyrics which I forget, and there was another shirt with the phrase 'The Afterleaf' above a picture of Thoth...does anybody have any ideas about what 'The Afterleaf' concept is about? On the back of the Afterleaf shirt is a picture of a snake twining around some vines and the logo 'Spring into Autumn' with the phrase 'Suspicious Fruit!' at the bottom... In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, I am _not_ assuming that the individual in question has the wit to send such a request to a listowner rather than the list itself. I did indeed see the mail to which you refer, sir. Charming. (sorry if i sound pissy folks, but i've been living through the worst day in the last 6 weeks...and it ain't been no banner month.) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Oct 1995 17:47:32 -0400 From: beach house tiki god To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: adminstrivia hey all, for the record, no one was receiving mail sent to the listowner. rather, someone who had been subscribed to the list via a prankster was trying to get off the list the backasswards way - by screaming at the list instead of the listowner. it's been taken care of and i'd appreciate it if no one sent any hate mail to ctrykitn@ix.netcom.com. in other news, i'm going to be out of town yet *again* until sunday. this time, i'm headed up to maine. net.freedom is a good thing. trust me. ;) i'll send out a digest or four sunday night when i get back. woj ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Oct 1995 18:10:32 -0400 From: beach house tiki god To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: bang bang, maxwell's silver hammer... jojones@mailbox.syr.edu (John B. (if anyone wants a dub, let me know and we can work out a trade). > And there were two t-shirts for sale: one had a cartoon panel two? i only saw one and i looked both before and after the show. the dechirico street shirt is probably "jaspar, this one's evil". some random thoughts: - robyn's not really that funny. i say that in all seriousness. his rambling and lyric changes were cracking up people left and right, but i only laughed a couple times. am i jaded? is there something wrong with me? i thought i was easily amused. maybe i'm just immune to his humor now. - whomever said his voice is clear as a bell is spot on. as with the guitar control, his voice control has gotten much better. every song was sung perfectly. - why does everyone like i got a message for you? why does everyone laugh during that song? have so few people heard it that the schtick is new every show? ugh. - i met gary assa (who promised to teach me how to swear in armenian) and bayard and his friends john and cece (contributors to glass fleshm woo hoo!). very cool to meet all of you. wish i had know that dave was going - would have been nice to meet even more fegfolk. think that's it. toodles until sunday. woj [][][][][][][][] End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
