After seeing the Egyptians w/ Peter Buck at the Paradise in Boston in '88, I was hanging around outside chatting with Morris - we were both waiting for Robyn (me for an autograph and Morris to go back to the hotel) - when Andy and Peter came darting out of the club and into a cab. DISCLAMER: None of the posts claiming that the drummer in my band is in fact Morris Windsor are designed to turn Fegmaniax into my personal mailing list. Bradley posted a funny message, I responded to it with something I thought was funny in an attempt to get some light-hearted banter going. It was not ment as a self-promotional item in the slightest. If it was offensive, I did not mean it this way. I would not like to see each and every joke/story that has anything to do with personal experience turn into flame-fodder. I would equally dislike the extreamily uncomftorably scenario of listmembers being forced to post disclaimers like this one on every post that includes the phrases "my band," "my music," "my bassist/drummer/guitarist/singer/keyboardist/glockenspielist," or the words "I" and "me". ---Mike (Nickname o' the month - "Grumpy Ol' Alterna-Guy") Check out the Other Days home page at http://www1.usa1.com/~mikeb/odays.html mikeb@usa1.com mikester@bix.com ------------------------------ From: BLATZMAN@aol.com Date: Thu, 28 Sep 1995 03:22:16 -0400 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: More McCabes It's old news by now, but I also walked away from Friday's McCabes show with mixed feelings. Just saw the Portland show last night. Robyn played a marvelous set and he even hit all the high "aaahs" during "DeChirico Street." My only complaint was that Morris Tepper was unnecessary (though not without character). By the time Robyn came on, looking remarkably like Richard Gere in his white (yes, pure white!) shirt and grey hair, it was near midnight and everyone was groggy from beer. But I woke up. Well, my other complaint was the venue--Berbatis Pan has the bar too close to the stage. It's annoying to hear the bartender shake ice and whirr his blender while Robyn is trying to sing "Glass Hotel," which is best heard in respectful quiet, I think, the better to hear his voice. But anyway, my sister & I are going to the Seattle show tomorrow. There's a Starbucks right by the backstage, but I don't know of any other meeting places nearby ( I went to the Backstage solo last year). Robyn appeared to have arrived straight from the airport, suitcases in hands, in jeans and unshaven, only to find out there was nowhere to dress! As the door guy took my ticket, I noticed a tall, dark handsome figure trying politely to shove past my sister behind me. He was profusely apologetic, saying, loudly "Where is MORRIS? That said on with the review.) By the time we got inside Berbati's it was already nearing capacity and the good seats on the floor were taken. My fault for the poor forecasting and my insistence on ordering one more pint before leaving. Tiddas (that's 2 D's) took the stage promptly to perform their rather brief set. I won't comment much on them other than to say I think this may have been the wrong bill for them to be on. Morris Tepper was probably a better match, but in light of all the abuse he's been getting on this list, I'll just say I think he makes a better sideman than solo artist. When I mentioned his impending work on Robyn's album to a fellow in the restroom, he was visibly crushed by the news. ("You know I always liked Robyn, but *this* guy...") After two sets combined with a later starting time (9:30) it must've been 11:30 when Robyn took the stage. He seemed to be in good spirits and after announcing he'd be playing "wall-to-wall folk" the set list was as follows: DeChirico Street Lysander Devil's Radio ? (I completely missed what this tune was) The President I'm Only You Cool Bug Rumble Trilobyte Glass Hotel (Switches to electric guitar without leaving the stage) You & Oblivion Queen of Eyes Woman In You Kingdom of Love (Leaves the stage to the rear and comes back in new shirt from the kitchen behind the soundboard. I still don't know how he managed this) Zipper In My Spine Birdshead I Am Not Me Only The Stones Remain I guess this was a relatively short set, but I felt it was more than adequate. Their was a fair amount of stage banter (although he did seem to cut it out after awhile) and the new tunes were definite standouts. Trilobyte was a good tune although I can't say I was really impressed by it. I'm Only You was very long with lots of great guitar work. And Robyn did play harmonica on one tune, Cool Bug Rumble I think. In the electric portion Zipper In My Spine and I Am Not Me were very rocking, and Only The Stones Remain was played in a more laidback, dare I say it, funky pace. A very good show on a rainy night in Portland, though I still maintain my claim that this particular venue was not very appropriate for a solo acoustic show (too much chatter too close to the stage). But I am a little dissapointed that there weren't more of you Fegs joining us before the show. It's not an immovable object controlled by a randomizer on your computer that achieves sentience and eventually tries to introspect to discover its own nature, like the machines in "De Chirico Street," so there's no "byte" in it at all. - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu ------------------------------ From: bing@student.umass.edu Date: Thu, 28 Sep 1995 23:14:33 -0400 Subject: b-sides To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu I've been listening to "The Live-In Years" and "Bright Fresh Flower" non stop for hours, and I was wondering if there were any other b-sides from Respect. If so, where could i get a hold of them? Off the subject: is there a Nick Lowe mailing list? I know what you mean. Maybe it's one of the feg clan memories. I was at the Berbatis Pan show last night, my third time seeing and my girlfriend(the lovely Colette)'s first. I rather enjoyed Tiddas, although their politics were a bit gristly for my palate. To each it's own I guess. Anyhow, they were definitely good musicians and singers; they did a lot with percussion toys such as sticks and little metal whirligigs. Their harmonies were nice and tight. Morris Tepper is raw as a rat. When he's playing his Tele he growls like a dog or a dump truck; his 'lead excursions' seem to me to have gone beyond the experimental to the atonal. However, with the acoustic guitar, he can be almost sweet and affecting. He did this one really great song called "If You Want To Hurt Somebody (sic)" that was quite cutting; the lyrics to his songs are razor-sharp. I liked him, but wished he hadn't brought the ladder, the rope, the watermelon or the Telecaster. [after he left the house dj made the mistake of putting on Morris' CD.] [One other personal note: when Robyn's set became imminent, these very rude louts came and stood directly in our view and stayed for about two-thirds of the show, despite my first very polite and then increasingly strident requests. They did, however, part so that Colette could see Robyn play {she hadn't seen him before and I really wanted her to; we made a round trip of 600 miles to see the gig} and she, I'll add, is now an offline feg.] [[Okay, one *other*other personal note: yes, I taped the show. My tape unit was broken, however, so cheers to the Fisher-Price company for the *very* sturdy tape recorder (with bright red microphone) I borrowed from a sympathetic child. The tape quality isn't super, though; let me know if you are interested. There *was* a fellow right next to me who had a portable DAT recorder; I'll wager his sounds better than what I got.]] ANYHOW, Robyn came on about 11:45 in the ubiquitous white shirt. He *was* looking rather tan, I'd say, on three gig's experience. He said that he hoped we weren't ready to rock, told a little tale about some things, and suggested we "cower in terror together while we cruise through this set' and started in. De Chirico Street was new for me; it's kinda like if you combined Balloon Man and The Devil's Coachman. His voice is *superb*; the high vox sounded as clear as hell's bell. (here was where he interjected a story about the blip; he finished by talking about them(?) downloading this fax from a tiny fax machine to those "things that they're dependent on" (computers?). Anyhow, it was a typical Robyn story, and then he said "Well, that's not what this song's acutally about; it's just something to visualize while I play it. It's a lot cheaper than video.") Lysander was next. It's one of my favorites, 'cause of that strange chord (the F#7 with the third *and* the suspended third in it) and the tone of the melody. God, I just gush, I guess, but as a guitarist I'm jealous and as a singer I'm demoralized by him. Devil's Radio was new for me too. I really dig the verses, but the bridge kills me ("Sun sets on the devil, sun sets on the west"). My ignorance is showing: the next song I have heard before, but don't know if it's called Tonight, but ends with: And in my mind, the color green Is oh so lonely and obscene tonight When the time is right Would somebody tell me the title please? It's great. The President was next: he was decidedly sharp in his delivery; I'd be sharp if so many people were chatting while I was singing. (It did seem to be a pretty noisy crowd; I'm not sure how many were genuine fegs and how many were just making the scene.) I'm Only You *was* a showstopper, as another post noted; it's a perfect vehicle and everybody in the house knew it, and the end imnprov bit was cool ( I wish I could *videotape* him and learn how his hands move on the neck!) Cool Bug Rumble is E7 blues interpreted by Robyn Hitchcock. As a student of that mode, I wish I could play harp and write lyrics like that, but I'm inspired, not demoralized; maybe someday ;-). Trilobyte is really neat, being about your bones named Laszlo being renamed the famous bones of Horace, which can be traded for beads. Ohhhh, Glass Hotel. One of my favorites, and I had no problem with his high vocals last night or on all of "Eye" like another poster to this list (although both of our opinions are completely valid, I say); last night's rendition sent a chill up my spine with its ringing clarity and wistful sincerity. (At this point Robyn switched to that all-black Telecaster I've seen at all three gigs.) You & Oblivion is searing, with it's open-D tuning and its stylish excursions. It's the total opposite of dreamlike, and the image of the death-train getting your ma and my pa is so real it stings. This was a highlight for me as a fan and as a human. Even better than the studio recording. (brief break to tune back to standard tuning) Queen Of Eyes was also nice without a band. It somehow seemd less sarcastic than the original Soft Boys version. And he added the following lines: Oh I wish I was live, I wish I was dead But she only wishes she could go to your head I don't know why she ...(etc) Woman In You---I'm not sure it's not deliberate, this switching and experimenting some other fegs have noted. I think it might be in there. Why not? I dig it 'cause it's like The Black Crow Knows a bit, and the chords are real spidery in the way they climb. Kingdom Of Love was groovy. To me it seemed Robyn relished the hardness of it quite a bit; he did some quite distorted grinding with the Tele, and of course the main lick of the tune is that neat jangly E thing we all tried to learn as soon as we heard "Underwater Moonlight". (he went off for about 5 minutes and came back wearing that silky-looking shirt [we at first thought we were looking at US flags, but it just a geometric thingy] and started right in again. And when he started again he was still in a mood to rock: he did a short thing I'd never heard with the lyric about 'a zipper in my spine'. Birdshead is a beautiful song. Great melody. It also made want to kiss the wife but since I'm not married I kissed Colette. Twice. I Am Not Me is very powerful. I learned a new riff while watching and missed some of the lyrics, but I can tell you that my pinkie is going to have to become more involved in my playing. I'm also gonna pick up picking. He finished the set by hoping we all survived Thanksgiving and then playing Only The Stones Remain to a rapt house. I thought it was a great show, well worth the trip and the rude people (and the trains out our motel window, but that's another story) who, by the way, left about halfway through the set. Rude and no taste too. Fancy that. Anyhow, Colette, as I said, is also now a fan and I'm newly inspired as a musical artist by Robyn's great playing and singing, but mostly by his gigantic *presence*, a word I haven't seen too much in these show reviews, even though that's what really sets him apart. Kinda long, I know, but I am kind of wordy.
