Aren't they the blokes that go around remixing Pink Floyd albums? Here's the Untabbed List (as it currently stands). If a song is not on it, it meets one of these two conditions 1) Tablature exists 2) It has been judged untabbable. This occurs if there is no guitar or piano or if the song is not really worth tabbing (ie: any Soft Boys instrumental. He seems to be slowly moving his repertoire towards simple guitar-based introspective songs, and he is playing them incredibly well. The sensitive listener (me, at least) was driven almost to tears by some of the emotion poured into the music. And I *must* get a copy of that TRILOBITE song, in order to exorcise it from my brain!! I wrote that last article having just come back from the show -- the show that I dragged a bunch of old friends who are into Jonathan Richman and They Might Be Giants and Doctor Demento to, promising them an evening of whimsical melodic pop-rock from the Lobsterman with the Lightbulb Head and the Dead Wife. I caught a good deal of flack on the way back; Moris Tepper left them cold and Robyn (who they heard for the first time) did not revive them. Me, I was appreciating the beautiful songs. Still, I must admit that this was the most relentlessly downbeat Robyn show I've ever seen. - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Sep 1995 12:22:56 +0100 (BST) From: M R Godwin To: The Can Opener Subject: Blinking, de Chirico Street The blinking goes with thinking, probably. We have tied a Radio Flyer wagon to the back of the van, so now Roger can, indeed, join us. We threatened to cut him loose however when he suggested we get Andy Thistlewaite to play saxaphone. Life on the road is hard-- everybody, it seems, wants to play the same songs and I feel like i'm constantly having to send people to opposite corners of the van. Morris has gotten accustomed to the correct side of the road, however, so things are looking up. We're playing tonight at Terry's so perhaps we had better begin rehearsal. Three things to ask you: (everyone, not just SF fegs) 1) Did anyone tape this 9/25/95 show? Please get in touch! 2) I am wondering if there is enough interest to set up a Robyn tape swap list. This would be a list sent out maybe once a month. People that were interested in tape trading would submit their entries a week or so ahead of time, and would include the following info: NAME LOCATION (i.e, what part of the world you live in) E-MAIL ADDRESS TRADING POLICIES: (i.e., I swap for blanks, I use only chrome tapes, etc.) BEST THINGS TO OFFER: 4 or 5 lines worth WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR: 4 or 5 lines worth I got this idea from the PML (Prince Swap List), and I think it works nicely. You can trade with someone based on geographic area, or policy (maybe you have no live Robyn, but you find someone that will trade for blanks), or based on what they have that you don't. Please e-mail me privately if you would be interested in something like this. And finally: 3) I am toying with the idea of making a list of all Robyn shows that have been taped and are in the tape trading underground. I have 2 contacts, made long before I knew of this list, that have pages and pages of Robyn stuff, mostly 1985-1990. Alot of it isn't in wide circulation (both of these contacts don't trade anymore) but at least it would give those people that are interested an idea of what is out there. My list would include dates, duration of show, venue, source, and grading. Is this something any of you --besides Bayard and Rob. Z :) ----would be interested in? Let me know. I'm afraid the old walkman was toasted, so no tape. Sorry. First off, I liked the description of Tiddas as "The Roches, but angry." I would say this: "Wilson Phillips with an attitude." I actually enjoyed Morris Tepper. While I didn't want another opening act (especially after the first one), I thought Morris was pretty entertaining. Raw and passionate. As far as Robyn goes, he looked great. As my wife and I were venturing up the sidewalk towards the venue, we spotted him standing next to his luggage, chatting with an unidentified female. My wife almost fell over when she saw is long(er) hair and nice tan. High points for me: The President, which he did acoustically. I liked the way he tuned down the low E to give the song the low rumbling sound we've come to know and love. I'm Only You. I think this was one of the examples of his "fearless" playing that Nick was talking about. I love the psychedelia at the end of that song, and Robyn did his best to hit every fret this time. He also did some of his best blinking. Queen Of Eyes. I wanted to sing along. Kingdom of Love. More guitar, um, heroics. Visions of Johanna. A brilliant song done with tons of respect. And of course, Only The Stones Remain. The wife (mine, not Russ') and I exchanged a nice smile; it's "our song." Low points: He seemed rather distant throughout. Apparently he had a tough time getting to the show, so he might have been a little out of sorts. Glass Hotel. One of the reasons Eye is my least favorite album. I love his acoustic stuff, but he sings that whole album in a high register which causes my tinnitis(?) to act up. The morons sitting behind us. One of the reasons we hardly ever go to shows anymore is people who think they're in their own living room at home and can sing along and talk whenever they please. Why pay $13 to just hang around and shoot the shit with your friends when you can do it for free? This country has way too much disposable income. Overall, a swell time had by all. Robyn seemed in a great mood... stories, silliness, etc. He didn't get annoyed by having to waste time tuning, smiled a few times. When his amp blew in the middle of a song during the encore, he seemed almost unfazed, finished the song on acoustic. As with last year, was struck by how much better his voice sounds lately (than it did a few years earlier). My Big-Time Honey (a major music geek) said he sounded clearer and more in tune. The exception was Visions of Johana, which at first he was singing too high for his voice, then too low (perhaps because he had brought down the wrong harmonica). Fortunately, this song has about a million verses, so by the time he got to the end, he'd found a better place to sing it. My take on his voice: clearer, cleaner, and stronger. He must've been taking lessons or learned how to breathe properly or something. Alex PS: He didn't seem into conversing with the audience or taking requests (as he sometimes is), but to his credit was more amused than annoyed when I requested Rock & Roll Toilet! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Sep 1995 16:19:08 -0400 (EDT) From: Bayard To: gigs of frogs Subject: goin' to the show... after much deliberation i have decided to make the journey to maxwell's a week from tonight. I suppose I'll have to look through my back issues now . So, is this the Mark Ellen referred to on the 25th? How about doing that Soft Boys reunion thing, only if you can't find the Soft Boys (who don't seem to be busy musically, but may want to do something like retire. I can just imagine "Mr. Davies? We want you to play guitar in a Soft Boys reunion tour that we're holding." "Go away. Some guy asked me to play guitar on an album 20 years ago. That's all. I've got better things to do than be remembered as some guy who played guitar for some other guy who later became mildly famous") Well, as I was saying...If you can't find the Soft Boys... Why not just go on with the tour, only without them? Ought to form the New Soft Boys or somehting, write your own Soft Boys songs, and take the Soft Boys in a musical direction that they sort of didn't go on before. Or should we start looking up "Melton" in the Cambridge phone books? To: bing@student.umass.edu Cc: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Nice idea, adding Roger Jackson to the lineup...Too bad he won't fit in the van.. Maybe you could get one of those mini-busses, or better yet, a full- size bus. That way, you could get James Fletcher and Chris Cox in on this also. My fridge is, currently, stocked, especially with Yoo-Hoo (my brother wants to get all 5 Cartoon Network Calling Cards..).
