Morris in my opinion is one of the best drummers anywhere, I don't think there's another one alive who could play 'the face of death' like that, all those manic triplets (or whatever they're called, diddlydums, like in 'oceanside'). Plus he could do it standing up. And that talking fretless sound of Andy's - bloody marvellous. It wasn't just Robyn, that band had CHARACTER. Fuck. I regard myself as 99.9% heterosexual - I've never been consciously attracted sexually to a man, but it *could* happen, and I'd be wrong to deny the fact. Let no-one deny you the right to slip half the population a midnight fish!!! I think Robyn recognises this fact and that his songs are a reflection of it. The only other heterosexual songwriter I know of who deals with this subject as frequently (or as well) as Robyn is New Zealander Chris Knox ("The Woman Inside of Me", for example). Hell, I know I plug NZ music a lot, but if you can stand budget recording quality ($1.50 with a tailwind) then try some of his music. His live performances, too, are amazing. But I digress. Whether it is wright or wrong for a heterosexual to speak out on gay matters ius a tricky one. Personally, I think it's fine to support a group to which you do not belong, but it's wrong to attempt to speak for them. For example, I support women's rights, and would speak out in support of women's rights, but I'm not about to go saying how women feel about an issue. The same's true with Robyn's songs purportedly about homosexuality. He's not speaking *for* gays, but his words do support them. >While we're on the subject (which one?) has anyone else noticed that the >beginning of Supersuckers' "Born with a Tail" is melodically identical to >the Monkees' "Take a Giant Step"? (Lessee...monkeys have tails, so I'm >sure it's an homage...) well, we weren't on the subject, but still. Subject: wee voices in my head... I was listening late the other night to a selection of discs on my cd changer, including _You & Oblivion_, and after awhile i nticed that many of the tracks on that disc close w/a *very* quiet voice, seemingly belonging to a little girl. At first, of course, I assumed that aliens had landed on my roof and were attempting to take over my mind. That passed, and I realized that it was much more likely that The Evil One had taken up residence among the fibers of my carpet, and was beaming seemingly nonsensical littel-girl murmblings directly to the evil-inducing lobes of my brain, making me rise up in fury and slaughter several apartment-blocksfull of goats, sheep, waterfowl, and assorted other wildlife. This, too, turned out not to be the case, and I realized that the CIA had finally discovered that I'd become aware of the secret connection between Fidel Castro and the rise of the Beatles, and how both events were intimately tied to the deaths of Marilyn Monroe and both Kennedys. The little girl's voice was undoubtedly a mesmeric "trigger" (as in _Manchurian Candidate_) which would cause me to go on a spree of mayhem, removing the government's planned atrocities fromt he front pages for a while. In this, I was, of course, superfluous, American journalists often being remonstrated to "get a spine" by jellyfish, even. Then it hit me (right after the word "jellyfish"): the XTC connection. We all know (at least we all know if we're good little boys & girls and know the XTC catalog) that Andy Partridge had some little child sing the intro to "Dear God," and a(nother?) little child mumble some nonsense in between the tracks of the Dukes of Stratosphear's second recording: the obvious meaning was that both Robyn and Andy were using these children's voices to get them both recording contracts, both acts recently having been dumped by labels too idiotic to recognize genius when they see it (wrong shade of green--American message). Of course, i could've just checked the FAQ. But I didn't. --Jeff Jeffrey Norman "Let's just quit talking about it, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and start watching it on TV" Dept. of English & Comp.
