Ordering details for 'Isle of Wight Rock' are: Price: GBP12.99 Postage - UK: GBP1.99; Europe: GBP2.75; USA: GBP5.36 International Money Orders payable to Isle of Wight Rock Archives. Write to Rock Archives, Palmers Forge, Newport Road, Niton, Isle of Wight, PO38 2DB, UK. My copy of the book has arrived; Robyn's featured on four pages, which deal mostly with his Isle of Wight influences - e.g. Compton Beach ("Airscape"), the Old Park Hotel (the "Glass Hotel" story - the book includes a photo of the fez!) and a couple of other things, like the recording of "Respect" (though not in any great detail). The price might be a bit steep if you're only interested in the Robyn section, so if anyone is interested in what else is in there and missed my last post, feel free to mail me off-list (jturner@rpms.ac.uk). I had not previously given her a thought since 1958, when I discovered trainspotting - weird! ...subsequently, somebody mentioned Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde, who I have also not thought about for decades, and the following day, Jeremy Clyde appeared on TV in a sitcom about a solicitor's office - really weird!! ...I shall now risk a further attack of nostalgia by pointing out that the original hit version of DECK OF CARDS was by WINK MARTINDALE in the early 60s. I am pretty sure that there was a take-off record by David Frost which was performed on the TV show That Was The Week That Was, which dates it to 1963/4. Deck of Cards retained the title of most offensive military hit record until the release of the obnoxious BALLAD OF THE GREEN BERETS by Sergeant Barry Sadler during the Vietnam War... * * * * * Further ELVIS observations: apparently during the last 10 years, the number of professional Elvis Presley impersonators has been increasing at a phenomenal rate. If current trends continue, one person in three will be an Elvis impersonator by 2009 - and demographic trends suggest that many of them will be Chinese! What prospect will there be then for an Egyptians tour of small venues? All the local performance spaces will be booked by guys (and gals? - see recent postings) putting over a big production medley of IN THE GHETTO and SUSPICIOUS MINDS to an audience full of Other Elvis Impersonators (!) all of whom are just waiting for an opportunity to leap on stage and whip into THIS TIME THE GIRL IS GOING TO STAY... To avoid his somewhat obnoxious companions, Robyn took an early morning constitutional on the shoreline, and discovered a corpse 'lying out there on the beach'. Things kind of went downhill from there, I think. There was a 'Robyn's Diary from Rio' article published in the WHFS press, someone typed it in and I'm sure someone will email to you. A lot easier than I thought it would be >Wax Doll is just a minor correction in the chorus It sounds a little off to me. Hi. My name's Ross Overbury. I've been lurking for quite some time, but was unwilling to post until I could find a suitably impressive nickname. Thanks to the Wordsmith wordserver suggested by another poster to this group, (sorry, I lost your article and can't give you credit for the suggestion) I am now "Orb's Surveyor" -- fit to post. I've played some of the better garages in my area in the past, and when I had to get a life, I substituted a portastudio for my bandmembers, who have since gone into country music, opera, and serving coffee. I've been wanking out chords for 20 years now but almost gave it up altogether without realizing it. This summer when I tried to play for friends I realized it was hurting all of us. I built up the callouses up again by playing stuff from Winolga (check this Internet service out at ftp.nevada.edu if you can, folks). Now I'm trying transcriptions from fegmaniax, and my fingers are OK, but something is definitely still wrong. OK, so my guitar has been in "free fall" for the last few weeks - the tuning is based on barometric pressure; but when I played this it didn't sound anything like the song I heard in my head. Got the Discman (TM) and phones, tuned the guitar to my cheapo Casio SK1 (TM) sampling keyboard for pitch reference and put on on Queen Elvis(C) . The E7 was about right, so I've eliminated the barometric factor. As I played along, the D seemed to smash violently into what was coming out of my phones. Here's my own reading of this song. It's probably not quite right, but it's getting pretty close. Revised Bass Intro (with no attempt to convey the beat). Listen carefully and you'll hear the hammer on (actually a glissando on a fretless bass, I think) in the first note under the string section G:----------------------- D:-----0-----2----------- A:--------------2-------- E:-0h4----4-------------- Try the E7 in this position: E A D G B E 5th fret | | | | O | | | O | | | | O | O | | | | | | | | Try the A in this position: E A D G B E 5th fret | | | | O | | | | O | | | O O | | | | | | | | | Try the A# in this position: E A D G B E 6th fret | | | | O | | | | O | | | O O | | | | | | | | | The A# sounds OK if you play Fmaj7 instead; that was my original call. If you play the A# in the position I showed and let the high E drone on, it sounds like what I hear them doing on the CD. Opinions on this, anyone? E7 Yesterday it seemed so cool and everything was fabulous A built of brick and made for an eternity E7 Give an inch and take an inch and what you've got is where you were A The universe is based on sullen entropy A# E E7 -it falls apart as it goes on A Yesterday I saw the Devil in the nude it was embarrassing D I turned away A# E7 He was leering in the mirror when I looked again Everything you say you won't is what you will eventually honesty is money in the cemetary If he treats you horribly, he's probably a Scorpio He's a long kebab through your ovaries the same goes out the same goes in Yesterday I saw the Devil in a mood. He wasn't angry but he stood around biting off the legs of all his furry chums I remember everything as if it happened years ago probably it did so I remember it You are just your feelings it might give you vertigo Falling off a high place and into it and I was into you Yesterday I saw the devil in my food I wasn't hungry but I played with it Blood red horns gouged through my scrambled Yesterday I saw the Devil in my heart I was expecting him The doctor came I have to call the doctor every time we kiss. ... >@SONG Wax Doll (corrected from previous version) > Terry said: >F Bb F Bb F Bb >Son there are mirrors here, watch your performing little whales I hear this: F Gm F Gm F Gm Son there are mirrors here, watch your performing little whales Or snip your harness off and take another walk around the bay the way the English say we only mustn't grumble in the end a needle in your back an arrow in your heart and you smile G Bb F Is your Wax Doll still crying in the fire? ... ----------------------------- Submitted with much appreciation for Terry's efforts in trying to work out so many songs. Maybe we should wait until a couple of us at least agree that a song is OK before we remove it from the "untabbed" list. When it's good, we should definitely post it to Winolga.
