Hello fegmaniax. what can I say to you ? This is my first posting of any kind....in fact the first task I set myself when hooking up to the net was to find the Robyn stuff - and here you all are. I'm Jim, I live in York, England (though my landlady says I have to move out, so maybe not for much longer). I consider myself a total Robyn freak though I'm sure some of you have it worse.I don't know all the catalogue numbers or what the great man eats for breakfast, but I rarely miss Robyn when he plays gigs in his own country (which isn't often). I met Robyn once, in Hull, and have a signed pre-release tape of Globe Of Frogs. Met Andy & Morris once too, in London. (Thats enough namedropping). There's so much I could say about RH, and it would be a shame to say it all now. Obviously I love the music, I am forever telling people who haven't heard of him how great he is. More than that, I am a songwriter - I sing and play guitar in a band called Freud Squad - Robyn's been a big, big influence. I might have borrowed the occasional tune, if I'm honest, but the man's existence, success and choice of shirts has inspired me to carry on at times of self doubt. When I discovered Robyn it was so brilliant to find someone doing something similar to what I wanted to do and succeeding at it, only of course he did it better. Since I'm still figuring out software, I hope this gets through, don't know what happens next, looking forward to finding out. Thanks for existing. John, buddy, this place has no seats/tables, however, let me just say that I have been to acoustic Robyn shows at places that don't have seats/tables and they decided to put some out, so oyu may want to call. Unfortunately I don't have the number. In any event the place is really small. Holds about 200 people? It is not in the best neighborhood. To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu " ... where do all the straight people come from?" asked a button I used to have. There's been some debate of late about "Queen Elvis." Hitchcock's imagery is so personal that I wouldn't try to say what the song means to him. I do believe that one of the things it's about is coming out as gay, and it's one of several songs he's written about gayness and androgyny - listen to "Ted, Woody, and Junior," "If You Were a Priest," "So You Think You're In Love," "Uncorrected Personality Traits," or "Egyptian Cream" for a start. At the second Ann Arbor show this April, he introduced "Queen Elvis" saying "This song is about lesbigays who successfully exploit their sexual ambiguity. More successfully than I do, anyway." "Lesbigay" is a word coined in the, well, lesbigay community in the wake of the bisexual movement and is meant to include lesbians, gays, and bisexuals while saving six syllables. "Queen Elvis" itself includes several other phrases common in gay slang in the States (and the UK as well, I believe). A "queen" can be a stereotypical gay man, or any gay man, and is part of dozens of compound phrases that can apply to anyone. (Some lesbians call themselves "control queens".) Someone "in drag" is wearing clothing you might not expect of them- it's usually said of men in women's clothes ("I could never fit your dress ..."), though a business suit can be called "professional drag." "Coming out" is short for "coming out of the closet," or acknowledging your gayness to yourself or others For me this song will always be about the trepidation of coming out. There's fear ("Have you got the nerve? ... It could break your mother's heart ... Coming out's the hardest part") not just of the consequences of confonting and admitting gayness but also of the terrible price of keeping such a secret. ("See that man who mows his lawn? He'll hang in drag before the dawn"). At best you have to face the particular scrutiny the world gives those who are different - "People get what they deserve ... justify your special ways" without having a clearer answer than "some are made and some are born." I have no use for the idea of gay love as narcissism, but "Two mirrors make infinity; in the mirror you and me find out just what love could be ..." is a beautiful line (and it always remindsme of "Here was a flower ... strangely like itself and yet utterly unlike itself. Such a paradox has often been the basis for the most impassioned love." (Thomas Disch, _The Brave Little Toaster_)) There was also a charge that it's inappropriate for straight people to discuss gay issues. I don't know or care what Hitchcock's orientation is. In his interviews, he's mentioned having two children and various girlfriends as well as buying gay porn and having homosexual encounters. To my knowledge, though, he's never publically identified himself with any label of sexual orientation, and until then saying he's straight or gay or bisexual or anything else would be speculation. I first saw Hitchcock perform on Gay Pride Day in 1989, and he dedicated "Ted, Woody, and Junior" to the occasion. When he played "Queen Elvis" during the next tour, people snickered at "Getting blowjobs from the press" and he gave them an evil look that would have frozen water and sang the next line as "great big juicy blowjobs from the press." It takes extraordinary courage to stand up and talk about gay issues in the Midwest (Cincinnati had just banned a Mapplethorpe exhibition around the time of the show.) If Hitchcock's straight, more power to him. It's too easy to leave these things to other people because it's not your fight. This fragile little song says more about coming out than anything ever performed at the National Women's Music Festival. [snip] I remember him once introducing "Ted..." with his usual discussion of the soft-core muscle-builder-type gay mags of the 60s, which he followed by saying "I'm not gay, I just went to a good school." Of course, as I type this, it occurs to me that that's still publicly *not* identifying himself with a sexual orientation... please note: i'm offering this only as a case where robyn did discuss his sexual orientation publicly.
