Date:8/30/95 >Stuff about bassists... (IMHO invoked liberally) I think that the two bassists were both great and tasteful. Each with ability to propel the rhythmic energy of the songs. I think that an advantage of Andy is that he was better recorded with better technology than Matt. I think that in seeing the (3-member) band together that it is extremely hard to imagine any tighter unit, without constriction, with any more positive chemistry than RH, AM, and MW. I don't think I have ever heard a better sound out of any band than when I heard them at the Warfield circa the '91 or '92 tour (my brain is all fuzzy, it needs a shave). The fact that Matthew was a great bassist doesn't make Andy a bad one. Pete Best, while having technical advantage, may not have possessed the intangibles that Ringo Starr had in helping the Beatles succeed and get their music heard. And no, I wasn't a big Beatles fan. I am surprised at how few people are floored by Morris' playing. He makes space for the other two, and plays some of the most interesting and musical background parts, sings, and doesn't drool on himself while playing. Normally any one of these things is enough to get a proficient drummer a gig nearly anywhere, Morris goes so far as to make the whole lattice network for the musical vines to grow. If he were in a more "pop" band, his face would always be on Modern Drummer magazine, and his signature would be on half the drum sticks sold in the western world. >Stuff about Respect... If anybody doesn't like _Respect_, before trading it in I think they should listen to it again and notice what Morris does. Railway Shoes is just about perfect. This and PI are fairly alone in terms of +Egyptians studio efforts that Robyn's pain of being in the studio wasn't directly translated on tape, for good or bad. I think these albums tend to better indicate how they present the material from them live than some of the other RH+E studio albums did. I still like some of the other ones better, though. I think I could easily put Respect and Perspex up against any of the top 100 picks of Rolling Stone or even Billboard for the years they were released and, though I may be a bit biased, I don't think I could find anything on their list I'd like better. That'll be $.02, please. Thanks. How 'bout you? >-Mike (Nickname o' the month ...) I seem to have little problem with the reverse stringing of the Ricky. The company has been careful to set the string height very closely between matched pairs, so my clumsiness in playing is similar either way. I also do more strumming than picking these days, hopefully avoiding the seven-lead-guitarist motif of the 70's somewhat behind. I have more difficulty with the narrow neck of the Rick and fingerings than with the pick hand, since my usual 6-string electric of choice, a 1978 S.D. Curlee U.S.A. has a neck that is nearly as wide as it is long (I exaggerate, but what else is new?). The Rick neck seems only a teents wider than that of a violin to someone who holds the thing kind of like a bear anyway. -- I would like Robyn to play his Rick 12-string more. His sound with it isn't irritating like so many others who have made the guitar somewhat popular (I don't think I need to name names). I presume he uses both pickups when he is playing, or squelches the highs a little, because he cuts through the rest of the music without creating really harsh noises. (I hope I do that, but you'll have to wait for later Glass Flesh tapes or my album to hear if I succeed.) I'm usually mostly a lurker, but every once in a while I feel like I have something to say. I went to see Yo La Tengo (one of my favorite bands) last Saturday. As one of their encores they played "Queen Of Eyes" in an OK version. I'd already heard them do "I Wanna Destroy You" once, so I wasn't too surprised. Ira told me afterwards that they've also done "Humane Music" and "Give It To The Soft Boys", but that only at practice :-) Unfortunately Georgia and Ira don't like Robyn's solo work much. They used to be huge Soft Boys fans, but they told me that what they mainly liked about the was Kimberley Rew and his guitar style. BTW: I *love* Perspex Island. I think it brings out the best in Robyn as far as pop music goes. Many of his songs sound like they could be pop hits if produced that way. I don't feel there's anything wrong with that... Sure the musicianship displayed is probably better than anything heard before but the album sounds empty. Maybe it's the lyrics that annoy me. I know that 3/4 of RH's lyrics probably don't have any meaning at all, but he used to be very good at making the meaningless seem meaningful. Nowadays he seems to me to lack conviction, his meaningless lyrics sound meaningless. For my money Eye is still his masterpiece. It's a record, not just a collection of 20 (or should that be 52?) songs. Oh well you can't please all of the people all of the time. By the way has anyone noticed just how easy 'Chinese water python' (if that's what it's called) is to play? There's a tricky bit in the middle which takes some practice but the main body of it is composed of some very simple chord shapes. Anyone who can play that old Beatles standard blackbird should be able to work out the music in an hour or so quite well. The UK release sold very few copies, as UK fegs had all bought the import by then. (The same thing would very likely happen in reverse [the expensive midnight music and glass fish discs sold pretyty well here, I believe]... we're not that numerous, but loyal.) Because of various troubles with my supplier and with my inspiration, I've had troubles building it. The current address is red_panda.tbyte.com 9999 There are a couple of freaks on the MUCK.
