The waiting room had been converted into a community centre, and originally Robyn was thinking about playing indoors. However, he was soon persuaded to go out where the rails used to be, and we sat on the edge of the platform and listened to an acoustic set including: ARE YOU EXPERIENCED (Jimi Hendrix) THE DEVIL'S RADIO SERPENT AT THE GATES OF WISDOM DE CHIRICO STREET THE WIND CRIES MARY (Jimi Hendrix) IT TAKES A LOT TO LAUGH, IT TAKES A TRAIN TO CRY (Bob Dylan) MADONNA OF THE WASPS AIRSCAPE Interval for free cups of tea! COOL BUG RUMBLE I OFTEN DREAM OF TRAINS BASS VISIONS OF JOHANNA (Bob Dylan) THE YIP SONG ONLY THE STONES REMAIN Robyn was in chatty and nostalgic mood as he described where the 1968 and 1969 festivals took place, where he used to walk when he lived on the island, how the ghosts now walk in mid-air since the cliffs eroded away, how Bob Dylan played harmonica in the wrong key at the 1968 festival, why Robyn writes songs about fish, where AIRSCAPE was written and so on. He apologised for using harmonicas to much (crude but effective) and said we would have got something better if we had paid! There were some interesting guys at the gig who have been writing a book about music and poetry in the Isle of Wight (called ISLE OF WIGHT ROCK, I think) which contains INTERVIEWS WITH ROBYN HITCHCOCK on the topics of THE GLASS HOTEL and AIRSCAPE, and also has an article about Robyn's father, Raymond Hitchcock. Jonathan Turner (jturner@rpms.ac.uk) has full details of this book which I expect he will be posting. I'll check out the rumoured Am7 for the third chord. Listen to the top notes being strummed on the track, I think they're predominantly on the 2nd string so that's where I differ with some people. Well mail me with comments and suggestions. PS Respect in my opinion is one of RH's weaker albums. It can't compare to an album like Eye. I don't know or care which albums are sell outs but Perspex Island did have some very good three minute pop songs on. Yours controversially, Christian 'tin ear' Burnham [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Thu, 31 Aug 95 00:15:03 WST From: baker_d@ee.uwa.edu.au (david baker) To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Re: Opinions on Robyn's records, sell-outs, etc Hi Fegs, Sell-out may be a bit harsh but PI is definitely one of Robyn's most commercial sounding records. In some ways I enjoy the sound that producer Paul Fox got out of Robyn on PI. For instance, the shimmering guitar intro at the start of IF YOU GO AWAY is simply spellbounding. However, I also feel that some of the songs end up sounding a bit flat or dead. In this respect, PI is he one Robyn album which I find the songs can drag on without getting anywhere. RIDE and EARTHLY PARADISE are two which seem to meander in this way. Paul Fox said that when he was producing the album he was shocked that Morris Windsor did not know how to follow a 'click' track to keep in time when he was drumming so Paul had to teach him. I feel this is fairly indicative of the effect that Paul Fox had on the band - He made them sound technically better but took a bit of the spirit away. On a similar point, I have noticed that some people seem to view EYE as a bit of yardstick as far as Robyn's albums go. I find this surprising as I have always viewed this as the worst Hitchcock album. I always loved IODOT with its stripped down yet imaginitive arrangements and its wonderfully inspired songs. I feel that EYE lacks both of these qualities and sounds like a pale photocopy of IODOT. I mean it's good but Robyn's generally a lot better. On the other hand, I found the first 3/4 of RESPECT to be right up them with Robyn's best.
