I'm pretty sure Donna Summer is an impromptu song unique to that show, I'd guess the other two to be by Fairport Convention and Dylan, respectively. But I know not. And I can't think of anyone else who makes up songs on the spot, tells such brilliant/funny stories and changes lyrics suddenly, seemingly on a whim, but they make sense. I guess that's why I've collected all these tapes (and will continue to do so!) bc. I don't even consider myself a real big fan (though i do like his songwriting a lot, don't get me wrong) but i've had two dreams; one where i drove from DC to LA to see a show, and another where he was driving me around in a car at the shore; we did a uturn on a big highway and he was telling me a story that, alas, i couldn't remember when i woke up. i think he lived in a messy beach house with lots of sheets all over the place. does anyone find it odd that so many of us here on the list have Robyn Hitchcock dreams? the only other songwriters/performers i've ever had dreams about were Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple. Usually the three of us get together and play songs, and usually in an old building at the school i used to attend. does anyone find it odd that so many of us here on the list have Robyn Hitchcock dreams? Anyone have any info? > >Thanks > >Michael Michael--This is a great solo show, one of the first I ever got via trading circles. Here is some info based on the questions you have asked. Donna Summer is indeed one of those occurrences (in the Improv Hall of Fame along with Digital Spaceship, Forthcoming Attractions, and Meat Home) where Robyn made up the song on the spot. The Knight & The Child is the title of the one after that. It sounds like a traditional type of song, similiar in style to Polly on the Shore. I'm not sure who wrote this. Went to See The Gypsy is a Bob Dylan song. Haven't heard the original, but looked up the song one day at a record store whilst bored and Bob Dylan is what it came up with. There is a good Mc Cabe's show from '88 with some odd off the beaten track type songs like Big Eyed Beans from Venus (Captain Beefheart), Nightfall (Incredible String Band) Strange Delight (???) and some song whose chorus is "Yeah Yeah Heavy and a Bottle of Bread" (or something similiar). I wish I could find Mc Cabes shows from Sep 94. No one seems to have any. Recordings of most Robyn Mc Cabes shows are available via trading circles, but the four shows he did last summer are nowhere to be found. Lastly, the most recent secret gig (Jonathan Turner posted setlist and details) in Clerkenwell England is odd for one reason (beyond the obvious rare guest musicians): It is the first gig in a year and a half NOT to follow his latest setlist system. Since March of 94, his first set has always been acoustic, ending with Yip Song. Then the next set (or encore) is always electric and always begins with the song I AM NOT ME. The recent secret gig did not follow this pattern. This, I would think, signals that the tour (whatever you want to call it...it was originally called the Spring into Autumn tour--but lasted through two springs) is over. The next time he tours, it will be to promote the new album. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- John B. I type as a career right now, and my hands hurt occasionally when I do too much. Breaking the story in 3 parts allowed me to take it easy. Hope you've enjoyed it so far. Without further ado..... "It's the hair," I said by way of explanation. "Blast it," came a muffled voice from the back of the helmet. "I'm the wrong way around. I'll have to dismantle myself. Don't look." This time I stood well out of the way. I spun around just as the figure began to sneak up on me. She offered me her left hand. "Pleased to meet you," she said. Her visor was up. "I'm Katherine." Katherine was as pale as a blade of grass that had grown all of its life under a stone. Her face was round, but her nose was long. She had a greenish hue with purple eyes that vibrated against golden irises. Her parents must have been very unalike. "There's going to be a storm. Where's Rollo?" "Where is he usually?" "Well, that depends on where he is." "So, where is that, usually?" Katherine tried to brush away a strand of chestnut hair from her brow with her right hand. Realizing that it was missing, she sighed and used her left. "Ah, this time of day I'm not sure." The hopping black bird was drinking from the enamel bowl that had but lately contained her head. Risking another silence, I asked, "How long were you dismantled?" She paused. She obviously heard the question. She looked at the blackbird. A clump of elder flower brushed its white delta against the purple feather on her helmet that matched her eyes. Then she looked at me. "It's not my hand that's missing. It's Rollo's." "You mean you leant him yours?" "Exactly." "But didn't you just ask me to look for it?" "I thought you might find Rollo." "If I found the hand, you mean I might find Rollo with your hand." She looked puzzled. "If I found your hand, the hand that belonged originally to you, it would be attached to him, and so finding the hand would then constitute finding him?" I inquired. "It's my hand," she said. "He's got it." "So," I asked, "what happened to his hand?" "Em, he never really had one." For the first time, she asked me a question. "Can you imagine a one-handed violinist?" "I can imagine one." Then she asked me a second question. "What are you called?" "Rollo," I said. THE END. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- John B.
