It's just as illegal as making and or selling bootlegs. Broadcasting it is an even wider distribution of an illegal recording than copying it for friends. And if it's broadcast over an FM signal, it's a prime candidate for someone else to take a decent radio broadcast and press it up on CD. Certainly it's been done before on lots of stations, but it is illegal. Hell, record labels get their noses out of joint when stations play a new release before they're supposed to (which is really only requested for massively huge releases; I believe some station in CA once got in trouble for playing a new Michael Jackson single before the release date). I'm an assistant music director at KUOM-AM at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. It used to be a low power station that could reach only the dorms on campus. There used to be a show that had a featured artist each week and rare cuts and bootlegs were regularly featured and promoted as such. The station then took over a powerful AM frequency that reaches most of the state. We have been instructed that any unofficial recordings such as bootlegs are not to be broadcast. Can I quote you chapter and verse of FCC or copyright law? Nope. I'm just interpolating personal experience. > true, but that is because the record label controls the distribution of > the legal release - they *own* it. record labels do *not* own illegal > recordings (regardless of whether or not they *should*). I don't think it's a matter of owning the bootleg recording, but rather they have contracted the rights (from the artist) to the copyrighted songs on the bootleg. The entire bootleg debate is very complex and eternally debated. The Prince mailing list goes on and on and on about it. Paisley Park even has a company called Grey Zone openly monitor the list for the newest Prince boots in circulation. Fans swapping tapes don't seem to be anyone's main concern (and some artists encourage it). However, mass-produced CD's of bootlegs can bring on lawsuits pretty quickly. My working philosophy is that any action that comes close to duplicating what artists and records labels usually do (mass-produce recordings, distribute them, seek radio airplay, etc.) is in a "gray area". The start of this debate was someone doing a college radio show featuring some RH bootleg recordings. Most likely, nobody will notice or care and the RH fans listening will love you. But be prepared for the possibility of someone questioning your actions, especially if it's a powerful signal that can reach a large amount of people. With that, let's get back to RH topics.... > >HITCHCOCK CONTENT: I got the Sequel CD5 of MWAMDW + the 3 K single songs. I > >didn't realize the CD5 removes the studio chatter before "I Something You". > > didn't realize that the 7" has studio chatter (still haven't picked up > a copy...wah.) The copy of the 7" our station is playing (which isn't a special promo or anything) has Robyn talking to a woman about protecting cats, and then waiting to begin the song because a plane is flying over the house. Had to special order it, but it was worth it--definitely a good investment. The nine previously released tunes are a nice mix, and SWAW is in my opinion better than any of the tunes on the K single and most of the tunes on Y&O. I see it as almost a sequel to Underwater Moonlight ("a song about two statues who go out for an evening together") and now that I think about it, it's at least his 3rd mention of statues in song ("wait till you see the statues in my bathroom" being the other). He seems pretty fascinated with the idea of inanimate objects coming to life. Love the old-timer voice at the end of SWAW too. Wonder if it'll end up on "Surfer Ghost"? On a related note, I'm one who prefers Robyn's work with with the Egyptians and the Soft Boys, because I prefer the sound of bass, guitar, drums & vocals together over any of those instruments alone. I'm always a *little* disapointed when he releases new material that turns out to be acoustic, but I guess that's the direction he's taking his career so I've stopped hoping for another electric album. But when I listen to the songs on Eye, Y & 0, Trains, etc. I can't help thinking what terrific tunes they are and how awesome they would sound "plugged in". To me, his songs are BEGGING for electricity, the way Dylan's early acoustic work did. What we need is a 90's version of The Byrds to start covering his tunes and call some well deserved attention to Robyns songwriting. Here's hoping someone on this list hits the big time! By the way, have any of you musicians ever tried layering bass, drum, electric guitar & backing vocals over some of Robyn's solo tunes? I'd love to hear what that sounds like.
