To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the existence of this list while browsing the WWW. I've been "lurking" for a few weeks, and have enjoyed the discussions so far. I'm a long time RH fan. In fact I remember first reading about the Soft Boys in Trouser Press when I was in high school in the late seventies. In the interview, Robyn said something like "Syd is always behind us, around the corner." Anyhow, I bought Underwater Moonlight in late 1981, and have followed his career with great interest ever since. One of my great regrets in life is that I have never seen him perform live, I don't think he has ever played in Florida. However, I have a few bootleg LPs and tapes, and have seen most of his TV performances. Perhaps on his next tour I'll travel to another state if necessary. Only 2 of my friends are RH fans, so it's great to be able to hear from others. Also it's good to see that he has many UK supporters. I've never met a British person down here who has ever heard of him! Some of my other faves are the dB's, Television, Fairport Convention, the Church, and most of the Witchseason Productions, especially John Martyn and Nick Drake. If you know of any lists devoted to any of these, please respond to me off the list. Thanks! Ken Frankel Assistant Librarian Florida Atlantic University PS: Regarding "Which Album," I like to hear the studio versions before the live as a benchmark, although most Deadheads would disagree, I guess. Actually, I think we need to think about clever new ways to slip through those words that bug Messrs. Helms, Gingrich, et al, without them (or similar types) knowing it. Neanderthal tenacity is seldom matched by mental agility y'know. I once heard a DJ announce that a song was by the "Buttonhole Surfers"--which is certainly better than "B Surfers." And Jefferson Airplane, on the lyric sheet to _Volunteers_, substituted the word "fred" (why? cuz) for a similar f-initiated monosyllable that RCA didn't like in print (oddly, it could be recorded...). Perhaps, in fact, we can simply use the word "fish" in this context: "My wife and I were fishing the other morning..." [titters of laughter interrupt]. And as to steaming coils of matter that might be found beneath a squatting person--I propose "crab": "Watch out! You'll get crab on your shoes!" Um, I'm forgetting what other words we can't say, if laws are passed. Of course, those of us not in the Benighted States don't have to worry about this (yet)--which will create some weird linguistic friction (is "friction" a bad word?) perhaps. That's all for now. Was Andy Metalfe called upon to testify? Is Kimberly Rew now a Senator in Maine? 2) What's the big deal with this bill? I mean, it's saying that child porn is illegal on here also. Why should I be opposed to something like that? 3) Does anyone *really* know what a Serpent Guitar is? Terry "She said it's an opinion. He first appeared in collarless white shirt and black waistcoat (and I have it on good autho(u)rity that he did the soundcheck in navy blue sweatshirt, how -- unUSual) for the acoustic set, wore his yellow w/ pink and turquoise salamanders shirt for the electric set, a parquet-tiled shirt for the 1st encore, and back to the white shirt for the 2nd (he took ages to reappear and I thought, he's run out of shirts, and sho' nuff when he emerged he said, "I'd run out of shirts!"). Won't comment on music, leave that to more tutored voices, ceptin' to say that Madonna of the Wasps and Glass Hotel made me cry, but by the time he did Element of Light in the 2nd encore my butt hurt too much to do any emoting. He rabbitted on between songs about gerbils and how they don't "sex" one another from 30 paces because they don't care what sex other gerbils are and how they don't have the vote yet, about fat people and how they're easier to recognise because there's more *to* them, about towers and moats, about lung cancer (while smoking) and about how he is not particularly sexually ambiguous. Hmm. Robyn *must* be a Temazepam addict, else how does he go to sleep of an evening, w/ all those little thoughts buzzing round inside his poor beleaguered skull? My friend visiting fr York said, in her nice Brummie accent, "He's very *hunky*, isn't he?", Cap'n Sensible was spotted, we sat too near the shouting snoggers (or snogging shouters?) who had come only to sing along loudly and tunelessly w/ Soft Boys numbers and talked incessantly throughout the rest (justifiable homocide, or wot?). But all in all everyone was terribly friendly and it was brilliantly worth a tank of petrol and a drive there and back.
