My Pink Half of the Drainpipe Peter Perrett RH stuff in Austin live oddities mrs. wafflehead yggdrasil [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 9 May 95 15:26 GMT+0200 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu From: hardaker@iaccess.za (Mike Hardaker) Subject: Re: Peter Perrett Peter Perrett was the lead singer, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for The Only Ones, a British band who rode the crest of the New Wave from 1978-1981 or so. Their first, self-financed (from Perrett's cocaine-dealing) single was 'Lovers of Today', which got them a real deal. Albums are 'The Only Ones' (*****), 'Even Serpents Shine' (****) and Baby's Got a Gun' (**). There is also a Peel Sessions album. The song you heard was the band's only real hit, 'Another Girl, Another Planet', a magnificent song. The Only Ones have something in common with RH in that the vocal styles of Perrett and Hitchcock are somewhat similar, and the music was more, well, musical than most so-called 'punk' bands (many of which were given the label by default). However, the lyrical territory is more an expression of adolescent angst than mature reflections on love, death and fish. For my money, Perrett was the *perfect* singer for the mixed-up kids whose parents don't understand them. Bugger Morrissey and all those other Johnny Come Latelies. Examples: 'Why do I go through these deep emotional traumas? Why can't I be like I always wanted to be - carefree? Why can't I be happy like everybody else? There's no peace for the wicked' 'And sometimes, when I wake up, I feel like I never woke up at all' 'This ain't no missionary speech, just some friendly advice: Why don't you kill yourself?' 'I love my mother but I wouldn't wanna have sex with her.' 'Take the crutch away from you and watch you fall down It's a shame about a girl like you always falling down' 'I think I'm on another world with you I'm on another planet with you Another girl, another planet.' The band split up because of massive drug-taking creating some quite striking personality changes amongst the personnel. Perrett, in particular, became something of a basket case but finally got off the junk in roughly 1986. He has recently formed a new band called Peter Perrett's The One, written his first songs for over a decade and, I believe, released an album. I saw the first gig in Amsterdam's Melkweg just over a year ago and the sound was more or less unchanged from Only Ones days, although Perrett has evolved from being quite a pretty, frail creature to having one of those Johnny Thunders/Keef-type junkie faces. The band was, however, significantly tighter than *any* Only Ones gig, especially the later ones, and Perrett only fell over once during a set lasting over an hour. Recommended.
