The issue contains the interview with Robyn that i have been posting in daily doses. I could ship it to someone for $7 or make a few tape trades for it. E-mail if interested. Pete [][][][][][][][][][] From: CPHZ@aol.com Date: Fri, 5 May 1995 16:05:25 -0400 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: RH in Symptoms? I'm new to the list, tho' a longtime fegmaniac. I don't have any stuff to trade or sell, but I do have a question. Perhaps it has been covered in some previous thread (but I haven't read every digest in the archives, so forgive me). Anyway, without further qualifications, here it is: Does anyone know anything about the band "Symptoms" that Sir Robyn was in, oh about 1973 or so? I read in a book, _The Punk Diary_, silver covers with a CD at the end, that he was in said band and that they played their farewell gig in London on 31 Dec. 1973. The book was actually kind of neat, with (literally) a day by day account of the 70s music scene, tho' "punk" is not what I'd say the book was about, as it covered glam and power pop as well. Well, that's enough for now. A lot of the difference between the US and UK music scenes can be explained by the fact that there's no American word for "naff." "Naff" is -- well, I suppose it combines "tacky" and "unhip" and "lame" and essentially implies that the object does not carry a cachet of coolness with it. It's hard to find a good parallel. When Q Magazine says that "folk music isn't as naff these days as it used to be," they don't mean that the quality of the music has changed any -- more that it's now more acceptable to be into it. - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu [][][][][][][][][][] From: swfcooke@warren.med.harvard.edu Date: Fri, 05 May 95 22:58:59 EST To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Re: naff? > >>naff? wot? a great sounding word, but can anyone define it for me? >i may need to use it soon as i am spending 3 weeks in England (missing >all of RH's gigs, dagnaggit but i hope to locate pl;aces such as East >Grinstead and a chalk horse). >thanks! Naff = dodgy = of dubious quality = not aesthetically pleasing; as in "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno is a bit naff compared to when Johnny was on." Or something like that. RH: Hmmm... well, I would have been Bob Dylan, but he's American and I'm English so I really had to model myself of people like Syd Barrett instead, because that was the closest thing, that was English Home Counties. As an amorphous, shapeless kid that wanted to be a singer but didn't know how you went about it, that seemed like a starting place. PT: There's always been a tendency from the less imaginative corners of the press to stick you into the Syd Barrett pigeon-hole. RH: Well, I brought it on myself you know-- we used to do Pink Floyd songs in the Soft Boys, and Barrett was a huge influence, probably more than I dared to admit at the time. It was quite obvious, and the press naturally picked up on it. I think my stuff now is very different from his, but the starting point was that sort of thing, so to the casual listener it might seem that way.
