He's the guy with whom you want to make an early album in your carreer, but as you find things out for yourself, you might want to try things that are against his religion and seek the help of others. Eno's relationship with music is as a listener first, with an incredible ear, and someone who can help bring out greatness in any genre. Padgam is pretty good that way too. I also kind of wonder what Flood (who probably could get out of the way and let the music happen), or Alien Jorgensen (has to put exploding machinery in everything) would do to a RH song- a whole album might be too much to take though. Old thread: Robyn's voice: I always thought of Robyn as having a very distinctive, ideosynchratic, interesting, _and_ beautiful voice. Usually these adjectives (except beautiful) are used as euphemisms for, "I can't stand that horrible, grating shit- take it out of the CD player and melt it down so nobody ever has to listen to it ever again!" I always liked his voice, but wondered how anyone would develop the strength of character to release tracks that showed the less-than-perfect vocal tracks. Some years ago I went to my vocal teacher and said that I wanted to sing One Long Pair of Eyes, and we worked on the song for a whole lesson. She said that I should try again at least a year later. This was not a dig, and she is a very supportive person. The song is just plain difficult for the normal breaks in a male voice (the normal female breaks take place a little higher, and this song should be a little easier for the average [whatever that is] woman). I recently had the pleasure of recording Listening to the Higsons , which was extremely easy to sing and play for the _Glass Flesh_ tribute. Actually the whole process took me about a day, after my first attempt which wasn't as good and vanished by some grace of my brilliance in my use of magnetic computer media. I also recorded My Wife and My Dead Wife for the project-- About seven hundred times! Like OLPOE, this song has big jumps in it. It is harrrddd. I decided to do a somewhat acapella version, so there is no backing harmony instrument except the voice of my very much alive sweetheart- I think that made it even harder to do. I am still not completely happy with my performance of it, but it is a whole take, and maybe RH wouldn't have wanted it to be perfect. In my sesquepedalien communicator kind of way, I'm saying that my respect for the man grows with each song of his that I hear him do, and even those that I try to do. He may not sound perfect, but he hates to do overdubs, and he sings many difficult songs. -Mark Gloster making my own tower o' babble ps. I didn't receive my own "others" message back from fegmaniax, but I think I forgot to add They Might Be Giants to it. Personally, I LOVE it when an artist lifts something from his previous work --it ties his whole body of work together. Robyn does that a lot with characters in his songs, and occasionally with his music. John Lennon was good at referencing his earlier work. Frank Zappa always had old themes and references popping up in the strangest places. BTW, somebody mentioned The Jam's "Start" coincidentally sounding like the Beatles' "Taxman"...I gotta believe that was intentional, not coincidence. It's just too obvious. I've always considered that to be a tribute of sorts. (first time I heard "start", BTW, was the day after John Lennon was shot) The Bangles--before they were big (or attractive)--had a tune called "I'm In Line" which had that same "Taxman" riff. Saw them play it once and Susannah Hoffs intro'd the song by saying "with apologies to Paul McCartney" (which shows ya, some people have no clue who they're ripping off--the song was written by George) Russ rreynolds@ksjo.com "is this phase one of lumpy gravy?"
