But the actual effect of this on his music is unclear. Will he be doing a solo album like "Black Snake Diamond Role" or one like "I Often Dream Of Trains"? I hope he'll keep his tradition of writing and performing songs with complex arrangements. Much as I love IODOT, there's only so much one guy with a guitar can do: it's musically limiting. "You & Oblivion" suffers in comparison to its companion "Invisible Hitchcock" (both very "solo" albums) because of this: after about 45 minutes I'm just really tired of hearing acoustic Robyn. There's not as much sonic distinctiveness to the songs. But like a lot of other people here, I must say I prefer solo Robyn when he's playing live. It's much more intimate; intimacy that's lacking on "Respect" and "Perspex Island" (though it's present on "Fegmania" and "Black Snake"). - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu [][][][][][][][][][] From: ZeroSummer@aol.com Date: Tue, 25 Apr 1995 23:10:02 -0400 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Eye! Eye is my favorite Robyn album, easily. It accomplishes the neat task of being absolutely brilliant lyrically but managing at the same time to sound like he made it up as he went along. I picture a fireplace, two dogs (curling up) and the guitar, and let's see what we can come up with tonight. Warm, witty, and stunning. It's not much of a stretch to guess that I also adore Trains. It and Eye kinda go together, though Eye's sound and songs seem a bit fuller. OK, that's all. To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Hi all, As long as I've already intruded, I might as well continue to do so. As I said in my intro only a few short days ago, I saw was a fan of Robyn when Queen Elvis came out. I then lost touch until I went to go see him recently. I would have to say that that was a great show. It was in a small place and a lot more intimate that the original venue I saw him in. He also seemed to be enjoying himself more. He was interacting with the audience and it felt so damn cozy and friendly. It was as if he were playing to a group of his friends. That is what made the show special for me - the bringing of an international star down to the earth for the audience. I saw Bob Mould a few days after that and it was the same thing. IMHO, if an artist tours separately, only his true fans will come to the show, not the ones who are there only to hear the current MTV buzz clip and will call that out until it is played and then promptly leave. It allows the artist to be himself and play what he wants or what people who are knowledgeable about his vast arsenal of work want to hear. It allows the artist to be what he wanted to be in the first place - an artist - on stage to satisfy his own artistic needs as well as the needs of his loyal followers. I don't want to go on for too long, so I'll end it here. That's just my two cents. The prodigal feg, (thanks to tcoplan@indiana) Lew -- -- Lew J. Peter Buck has had a large influence, but ladies and gents, lets not be stupid and assume Peter is REM. I'm sure Peter doesn't want Robyn to be like REM, and Vice versa. Musicians are allowed side projects. IMHO, Peter has had a wonderful effect on Robyn. I MUCH prefer the electric version of Globe Of Frogs. Didn't he play on Chinese Bones? And another thing. Sometimes it's hard to separate a finished version of a song from the potential the song originally had. I've heard many people say how much they like Robyn's songs live more than on his last few albums. Robyn still writes great songs. Perhaps he's gotten the wrong producer. But remember, he is a musician, not a producer. This is not a put down. These are very different jobs. A good producer can make or break a recording. Think about the first time you heard Driving Aloud. It was probably live, acoustic, and it blew you away. That PROVES that Robyn is still writing brilliant songs. If the end result doesn't turn out to your liking, that doesn't mean the song isn't well written. Robyn might not be happy either. I've turned more people on to Robyn (thanks to Doug for my turn) with that one album... It's like the Posies' "Failure". Just something people hear and love. > It's not much of a stretch to guess that I also adore Trains. It and Eye > kinda go together, though Eye's sound and songs seem a bit fuller. OK, > that's all. I like trains, especially some of the Eye-ish songs on it, but it really sounds way too uneven for me to get a decent listen to it. I play certain songs from it and skip others. I mean, as funny and witty as "Ye Sleeping Knights of Jesus", "Mellow Together", and "Uncorrected..." are, does anyone else agree that they probably should have been B-Sides or bonus tracks, not real in-the-middle-of-the-good-stuff tracks? I was shocked to hear a demo of "ye sleeping knights" just because the song itself sounds like a one-off! I have similar complaints of a lot of Robyn's albums. "Element of Light" is the only other one I think doesn't suffer so much from unevenness... In fact, I daresay that a great many of the songs from Invisible Hitchcock and You & Oblivion should have been album tracks and a great many of the album tracks should have been saved for another album or just stuck on the "weird stuff" LPs... Certainly his style has rubbed off on him, but I prefer to look at it as a turn around. Peter has said in interviews that he "borrowed" his guitar style from Uncle Bobby, in fact the SB influenced R.E.M. to become a band. I believe that Robyn went one way with his style, while Pete Took what he liked about it and went in a different direction. It could therefore be assumed that Peter Buck is playing the way Robyn would if he had taken a different path. Personally I like the connection of the two. They go nicely together. Both have simplistic guitar patterns, sometimes but they make them hauntingly beautiful. 2) Why are we discussing the decline of R.E.M. on this list? Just curious. 3) after reading all the lists of fav bands, I remember a picture I have of Uncle Bobby with Frank Black and Billy Bragg which brings me to my list: Robyn, U2, REM, Sugar/BobMould, Pixies/Breeders/FrankBlack, Matthew Sweet, Live, Leonard Cohen, Janes Addiction, The Cult(Broke up), NIRVANA, Cranes, BEATLES, Belly, and many more.
