Amen to that... Not that I would have been so harsh in my flaming of the geenuinely good people on this list, but I too am kind of sick of scanning messages to look for the real RH chat. The Posies list is doing the same thing right now (and all music lists seem to do it) and it just gets old... OTOH, just because I don't like it doesn't mean it's bad. I mean, that's my vote and everyone else has theirs... > and, after seeing Robyn at the Park West and earlier solo on the 'EYE' tour, > I prefer to see him solo! It was aesthetically pleasing to watch Robyn I must disagree here, though. Even though my favourite Robyn SONGS are the solo ones (and Eye is my favorite RH album) I must say that live RH+Egyptians is MUCH better than RH alone. Even just having Deni on stage really improved it for me on this latest tour. He just seems to feed off Andy and Morris so well. It's like, with them on stage he doesn't need to repeat his song intros and all 'cause they just come. Alone it felt kind of forced. Like "I gotta tell some weird story now". IMHO, he NEEDS someone to talk to and banter with and you can't just rely on the audience for that. Besides, many songs (Oceanside and Driving Aloud come to mind) sound really awful without the Egyptians. Now, I could see not doing Egyptians tours until he dies or something, but swearing off the whole band thing is a mistake, I think. You gotta stay open to possibilities! I'd be happy with solo albums and motley group tours. Bring along Morris and Andy and Pete Buck and Deni! Yee hah! What fun that would be! I have to sort of agree (though to a far lesser extent) with that rock writer who said he gets kind of repetative alone on stage... > Another bit of news from the same radio show: Robyn said he had been > approached by FANTAGRAPHICS about doing a comic book! The last three are a little too clogged with pop cliches for my liking, almost as if Robyn was trying too hard. It almost reminds me of the big change that R.E.M. made around the time of "Document." Based on that knowledge, it's probably not surprising that "Eye" and "IODOT" are my favorite Hitchcock albums. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing some more acoustic-y material from Robyn, and to the removal of the glossy production values that took away from the songwriting on his past few efforts with the Egyptians. All IMHO, of course...I know there are plenty of you who disagree with me on this issue. -julian- [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 25 Apr 1995 00:50:26 -0700 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu, fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu From: avarice@primenet.com (Christopher Donnell) Subject: Re: Faves list Well, to further waste bandwidth here's my list of favorite bands (if only I was at home near my CDs!) *Ummm.. the big ones... Okay... I would suggest that as a musician grows his writing style changes, and as REM has moved away from the more radical sounds and vocal techniques of years past and into a more "rawk"-type sound and lyrics which flirt with the Morrissy-style diary nature, I think Robyn has shifted from a more "anxious" songwriting style into what I would call an introspective style. I enjoy both eras of both musical denizens, but I prefer the early REM sound and the current Robyn sound (minus somewhat inappropriate production on Respect and PI). I think it's silly and a tad demeaning to Robyn to postulate that his style has been dragged down by a desire to change with REM.
