After the show 5.17.93 in Georgetown, a friend and I accosted Robyn and my friend wanted to know about the acoustic robyn had played during the solo bit of the show, though he knew full well it was a Martin D5 or D50 or whatever the best one is. "What model is it?" he asked. Robyn looked quizzical. "Wot, the cheese grater?" he asked. Cheeky devil. Robyn seemed tired, perhaps from calesthenics during 'kung fu fighting', the final encore; so we left him to be alone with Cynthia. There's a tape of this floating around the states, thru Trudi's influence. The show went out some time in mid '85, before the Egyptians had really got going. They started the show by playing Heaven live, thene there were a couple of other items, including a film of the then-new US "Paisly Underground" scene (which included the Long Riders and Green on Red. At this point Mark got to interview his long-time musical hero. From Ellen's point of view this was an enlightening and sensitive interview... unfortunately, Robyn much preferred to talk about fish and socks etc. The look on ME's face had to be seen to be believed. They also showed the video of "Walking on Sunshine", which evidenced the revelation from Robyn that "Kimberley and I always had similar tastes in socks, and for all I know, he's still wearing them". This tape was also the first time that I ever heard Brenda live (with the "...and disintegrates!!!" bit). Worth looking out for. I think that although this thread is a good idea (helps people get exposed to other artists that they may have otherwise not heard of), but I think that the Robyn Hitchcock mailing list is not the proper forum for this type of discussion. There are other forums on the Internet such as the rec.music and alt.music USENET hierarchies that are more suited towards this type of discussion. My main problem with this thread is the fact that it wastes bandwidth, and more importantly, clogs up many people's mailboxes and costs them $$ they should not have to lose. Many people here are paying for the privelage of having their e-mail account and pay for *all* the e-mail they recieve. Therefore, if everyone starts posting their "favourite album list" etc., it winds up costing other members of this list $$. So we may just want to shift this thread to private e-mail The reason I'm so concerned about this is that on other lists that I am on (Costello and Sugar to name two), these types of threads in the past have eventually spiralled out of control, clogging up the whole mailing list and eventually winding up with lots of bruised egos and hurt feelings. So I think it might be idea to shift this discussion to private e-mail before we reach this stage (remember - we're a happy family ;-) ) I'm not trying to start a flame war nor am I trying to hurt anyone's feelings here - rather I'm just posting my opinion on this topic in a nice peaceful (I hope ;-) ) manner. Remember - this is only my opinion - you can take it or leave it :-) Well that's just my $0.02 :-) ;-) Slainte!, Jeff --- "But, you know "reality" is the consensus of perception; and therefore, the consensus of action: we all agree to see things in a certain way, so we all drive on the righthand side of the road. Along the way I was moved by Springsteen, Elvis (the C.), Graham Parker, but they don't maintain my interest these days. Paul Kelly's work with the Mess- engers is outstandng, but his solo/acoustic/mellow doesn't do it for me anymore either; Robyn being one of the few who can do it alone. Richard Thompson, of course, being just about the only other: he can rock an acoustic guitar harder than most anyone else can an electric. But he belongs with a Strat in his hands! Then there is the god-like Tom Verlaine who does nothing but amaze, both solo and in Television (anyone know if they're going to follow up on their reunion album of forever ago?). His playing, writing, singing (though I suppose an aquired taste for some) and overall taste and sensibility are exquisite, and he's crafted an incredibly consistent body of work. He just doesn't release enough new music. Pick up on his recently re-issued "Dreamtime"! Other major favorites of recent years: Pixies (some Frank Black, definitely Breeders)(anyone else hear a tribute to the Soft Boys at the end of "Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons"?), Sugar (but not Husker/Mould alone), Feelies, Dinosaur Jr. (especially the first 8/9ths of "Bug"), Crowded House, Poi Dog (where have you gone?), Mercury Rev (ditto), Belly (loved the new one straight through, also seeing them the night before Robyn; he spent some time there that night someone said?), and Ziggy-era Bowie (or was it Bowie-era Ziggy?). The thing that makes all these folks special for me isn't a particular shared trait, but what I am unashamedly pretentious enough to dub visceral imagination: the ability to intensely feel something in a very human way and manifest it in a manner that successfully communicates it to others, preserving as much of the original experience as possible. Enough for now: the signal-to- bs ratio is approaching the painful threshold. Please just stick to Robyn and related material.. not "love me-love my record collection" fan-boy postings! my delete finger is getting sore! Sorry for the RANT...i don't wanna piss anyone off. ok...this 'news' from the Sound Opinions radio interview from Q101 (thanks, Pete!) NO MORE EGYPTIANS!!! Robyn told the hosts of this show that the Egyptians are finished. He said he is tired of the band concept...he thinks his songs stand alone...that he was tired of blowing his voice out with the band, that he doesn't feel that he is a "rock 'n' roll belter"...he said that he doesn't want to run a "six-legged race" any longer...and that from now on, career-wise, he is a solo act. Hence the "living epitaph" concept with the RHINO re-issues. While this is sad on the one hand, I am excited that he sees his career as on-going, instead of just breaking up the band and going away...We have a bunch of good live recordings and tapes (when are we gonna start a tape-trading tree...e-mail me privately if you wanna SWAP!) and, after seeing Robyn at the Park West and earlier solo on the 'EYE' tour, I prefer to see him solo! It was aesthetically pleasing to watch Robyn take the stage without the trappings of rock (lights, roadies, a rhythm section, etc.) and just play his beautiful songs. His voice soared when he didn't have to scream over the band. And he could concentrate on the quiet passages making for a compelling evening and a truer look at Robyn, the artist in his element. His new mature approach to his performance and songwriting will keep him interesting. Robyn said on the show that he has worked through his mid-life crisis, and coming out the other side, he feels comfortable with who he is. He said, however, that he has no desire to do songs like "Brenda's Iron Sledge" or "Give Me A Spanner, Ralph" ever again! He said he considered going away at one point because "there is just something obscene about an old man with an electric guitar." That would have been a waste...glad he reconsidered! Remember this when you see him live nenext...and be considerate with song and story requests. Let him explore his own catalog as he will...let him reinvent himself...and just be glad you are there to watch a true artist practice his craft. Don't be so star-struck if you wait to meet him...think about it from his POV...it's human music he plays...don't treat him like an alien...Don't mean to be preachy...i just want him to be able to grow and keep playing without getting fed-up with fanatics that go to the shows to watch him "tell weird stories and stuff." Another bit of news from the same radio show: Robyn said he had been approached by FANTAGRAPHICS about doing a comic book! He had been given "a load of" underground comics by them (wonder if he liked HATE! or LOVE AND ROCKETS or...)but hasn't found the time to do it. Comix lovers and fans of Robyn's cartooning...keep your fingers crossed! He did say that a short-story book with illustrations (!) in the works. Remember, leave the Top-Ten lists to Letterman! To: Fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu No more Egyptians!? Yikes...I guess I'm of two opinions on this. For one, I think that Robyn is unquestionably a brilliant musician, and I think that the best gigs I have seen are just him by himself, with his guitar. However, I do feel that the Egyptians, chiefly Andy with his excellent bass playing, added something important and significant to Robyn's songs. Andy's bass work fits so perfectly and wonderfully with Robyn's guitar, it makes me a bit sad to think that their collaboration is for the most part at an end. This said, though, I certainly think that Robyn solo is a much more intense and personal, and during certain songs (Airscape) even spiritual experience. Robyn's quote that he doesn't ever want to play 'Brenda...' again is fine with me...I personally think that his new songs ('Wide Open Star', 'De Chirico Street', and the others which I unfortunately can't remember the titles of) are AMAZING, some of the BEST stuff he's ever written. His songwriting has matured SO MUCH, while still retaining that magical lyrical and instrumental sense that makes it uniquely 'Robyn'. I agree with HAL about supporting Robyn's decisions, and respecting him. I think that the whole "Robyn Hitchcock, the freaky guy who tells weird stories" portrayal is terribly off-track and doesn't do justice to a brilliant, brilliant writer and musician.
