I love the original _DecAy_ version, but the Egyptians version as presented on _The Kershaw Sessions_ was a true dissapointment, with a horrible Thompson Twins-style synth (did someone let Matthew Seligman in the back door of the studio?) making it sound cheesy instead of tense. And wouldn't Deni Bonet's violin sound great on a violin/acoustic guitar "St. Petersburg?" Robyn played, took calls from listeners, and was interviewed by hosts Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times and Bill Wyman of the Chicago Reader for about an hour or more. Robyn played three songs...... Sinister Bitch I Something You Surgery They talked about Syd Barrett, influences, the reissues, new lp which is being recorded now and will be released in about a year. No new label plans yet. I didn't get through to ask my question if Live at the Portland arms by the Soft Boys would ever be released by Ryko on cd. Here's info to anyone interested in a dub or trades. For a dub, just send a blank 90 minute tape with adequate postage. I'd be deeply appreciative of anyone who would be willing to share with me. And for that matter, I'd also really like a copy of the Manifesto, to put with the Globe Of Frogs lyrics file. He's credited as 'Robyn Hitchcock as Keith', Keith being the hero of the tune. He's very typically RH, too - he uses the word 'undulating', among others. I bought GLOBE the day it was released, with some trepidation at the prospect of his major label debut, but was not let down! Robyn stayed true to his vision like all the greats must do (Lennon, Zappa, Grateful Dead) and saw him live for the first time in Detroit on that tour. I have since seen him multiple times, but the show at the Park west was too much. I was annoyed with Deni Bonet at first, but when Robyn joined her for that "BIG" song on harmonica, i ran back from the lobby and actually enjoyed those last two tunes she played. Little did I know that she would enhance Robyn's set so beautifully. Her arrangements were just right, and the musical interaction between her and Robyn seemed genuine...she inspired him with her violin to sing beautifully. he seemed to really enjoy her dedication to his songs. She told me after the show that she has recorded with him. I hope the song "Beautiful Queen" is on the forthcoming release. as I said, Robyn sounded beautiful, and after me politely suggesting "AIRSCAPE" a few times so he could hear, he played it as the final encore. YES. A beautiful show, I was mesmerized from beginning to end. After a long wait following the show, Robyn emerged to leave the venue and my girlfriend and I along with 4 other patient folks got to chat with him a good long time! He was nice enough to draw a little cartoon addition to my RHINO Records lithograph, even though he said he wasn't in shape to be cartooning...he started drinking beer during the encores and this was about an hour or so later! He told me that his mental picture of the old geezer who narrates "Statue with a Walkman" was a very wise black man wearing overalls. When I told him Airscape sounded great, he seemed to recognize that i was the one asking for it a lot, and smiled and said "Oh, Yeah, hi" He was quite nice the whole time, telling me that his original painting weren't for sale because he didn't have enough to part with, and that was also the reason why he wouldn't show them in a gallery setting, as i suggested. I thought he was more prolific than that, but i guess not. He also told me that he hadn't been to the Compton Beach in the Isle of Wight for about a year now (it's the subject of 'Airscape'-see Rhino Element of Light liner notes). Finally, he had to go because one of the others wanted to take a picture and it made him uncomfortable. He said, "i always look like i want to kill somebody in photographs!" (see back cover of "EYE") :) He was quite interesting to talk to in a casual unhurried setting. quite a treat and worth the wait! A beautiful capper to a GREAT show. Now, who's got a tape of it???? I've got lots to trade, not only for that show, but for any others! Also looking for interviews and radio show appearances...please help. your list gets mine! Oh and Jill sobule was really entertaining. One more thing, they mentioned a forthcoming ROLLING STONE piece on RH...watch for it. In coral and in jade, HAL. You don't say anything about your intended victim, as to his or her preferences. Here are a couple of ideas I hope you find useful: 1- I almost always try to turn people on with either Element of Light or possibly Perspex Island. Half the tracks on Element are gems, and the others, with a couple of exceptions are stellar in their quirkiness. PI is lush, and is in my opinion the best-produced of any of his albums. If you're trying to turn on a pop-slave PI may speak to them. 2- Underwater Moonlight is also excellent, and it stands on its own, but isn't really representative of any of his solo/Egyptians work. 3- fill a tape with a side of his straighter stuff, followed by a side of the really quirky stuff. Throw in a couple of covers: More Than This, I have recently discovered, is good for this, if you can find it. I expect the same would be true with for a couple of tunes from the A&M covers tape. Oh yeah - The Ghost In You is good for this too. 4- Steer clear of the more um, problematic, tracks, like Sandra's Having Her Brain Out or Ted, Woody, and Junior. Some people are really put off by the lyrics, for reasons I shouldn't have to explain. I'd also suggest hitting the near-pop tunes: If You Were A Priest Airscape All I Wanna Do Is Fall In Love It Was The Night I Wanna Destroy You and possibly these: Raymond Chandler Evening My Wife & My Dead Wife Luminous Rose Arms of Love if your listener likes death refs, Trash because it gets some people 'right here', and Uncorrected Personality Traits any of the Devil songs Clean Steve Give It To The Soft Boys because they're funny and clever. You may also want to include I Watch The Cars #2 lots of Soft Boys stuff for folks who like to hear stuff that "ROCKS". I guess the best advice I can give is - pick tunes to fit your listener, instead of trying to collect all his best songs on one tape. You'll find yourself tearing your hair out, and you'll end up putting songs together that don't belong together. Hope this helps. Now I study in Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, and there's still not much I can buy! Anyway, I can't really say which are Robyn's greatest hits since every single song has been a favorite for given periods of time, but, still, I think it's a good idea if everyone of us should identify some songs that he/she THINKS are his favorites.
