One of my co-workers sent me a posting from the Richard Thompson mailing list regarding Robyn, mostly regarding Robyn's covers of various things. Terrence & I made the 3 & 1/2 hour journey to see the man in action last night. The show was 10 times better than the one we saw in Philadelphia. At least Robyn was, that is. The openers got really annoying REALLY quick - just because they use almost the exact same schtick and between song banter that they did 2 weeks ago. And I mean EXACT. Anyway, it was a good crowd, very polite. Robyn opened with "Surgery" (!) and ended with "Higsons" (!(sarcastic)). Got an hour of it on tape using Terrence's handy-dandy portable cassette recorder. It actually sounds pretty damn good! We had brought along my 4-track in the hopes of getting a mixing board lead, but no such luck. Robyn plainly stated "Uh, not tonight." So I taped him anyway. The set contained, but was not limited to (and not in this order): DeChirico Street Queen Elvis Chinese Bones Surgery Higsons I Often Dream of Trains My Wife and My Dead Wife I Something You Only the Stones Remain Man with a Woman's Shadow Never Stop Bleeding I'm Only You And a bunch others (about 2 of which I've never heard) Terrence was persuasive enough to go hang out with the man after the show, got him to sign our lithographs (which Robyn called "crap"), and managed to bring him down so I could at least meet him. He was very happy and couldn't have been nicer. He asked us how we thought it sounded about 3 times. Still didn't get a chance to ask him all those questions I've been saving up, though. Oh well, maybe next time. Well there ya have it. Deni offered us free tickets to the Ann Arbor show, but we can't make it that far west. bye clint P.S. Also got one of the Rhino sampler tapes in the mail today. It's a 6 song that I can't remember the tracks from. Pretty crappily put together, but I didn't expect much more - hell, it was free! At the Burlington show, Robyn told a story about a car in a train who was annoyed because the car in front of it kept on flicking cigar ash on its nose. all this car wanted was to get ahead of the other one so it wouldn't get cigar ash flicked on it. as it turns out, though, the train is on a circular track around a lake, and whats more, there isn't an engine; just a circle of cars all joined together. and they may be moving, or the track is moving, or none of them are moving. a sort of existential dilemma from the standpoint of the carriages... so if, as james noted, the train is a metaphor for the journey through life, what we have here is a sort of twisted eternal return scenario...or something like that... can anyone put this in a more understandable translation? ...b [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Fri, 14 Apr 1995 21:21:49 +0100 (BST) From: "Espen H. Culled from the disc "Fegmania," this track represents his highness' first work with the players who later began the Egyptians (WHAT THE FUCK?). That would make him a Pharaoh, we think, but we're not particular. Slake your parched ears on something richthaus from the deepest well of liquid refreshment we know-as cryptic as he is prolific, this soveriegn songster always hits the spot." 2) I found Rout of the Clones on CD, good sound quality, 18 tracks, nice booklet & SB discography. i will give more info after i have had time to evaluate it. 3) i got the rhino cassette sampler... Sounds Great When You're Dead artwork from the rhino CD sampler and the following tracks: A) Acid Bird, Uncorrected Personality Traits, Heaven B) If You Were A Priest, Airscape, Cynthia Mask 4) i found a book in SeeHear on E 7th St. called "Robyn Hitchcock, The Golden Prince" which is a neat collection of, i think, almost every article written about the man as well as rare cover art, a full discography, some neat-o press releases "A&M is pleased as punch to present the latest album from this offbeat English import" and promo photos from other labels and some fiction and the covers of odd stuff like live death and concludes with the promo-only compilation that rhino put out at the start of the reissues.... it is a good size booklet, the front cover has a picture of robyn, the back has a setlist that says, New York, 5/19 and there is also an order form for the "Society of Dark Birds," which i thought was no longer in operation (trudi? sandra?) 5) i forgot. sorry. thanks for caring.
