There, now I've got that out... I went to the Toad's show, got worked out of Providence and TTs and Ticketmastered out of TTs on Sat. But I made it to Amherst! And I'm REALLY glad I did! The place was small and new, like a recital hall. The audience was very "into" the performers and were all rather mature about everything. It was even better for me, though, 'cause a friend from Conn who I met at New Haven was first in line in Amherst and saved me a front-row center seat! Best in the house! *grin* Deni's band was almost full. There were three in New Haven, and four in Amherst. There are supposed to be five, I hear. They were MUCH better with a bass player, even good! The violin wasn't annoying even! Jull Sobule played a completely different set than New Haven, too, so it was great. Just a few overlapping songs... And EVERYONE was in a great mood! Robyn was in a really great mood, though his voice was a bit shot. He warmed up all night and was smiling and joking all over by the end. He mentioned Mishy (no longer sick, I suppose) and sang I'm Not Me and I Something You smiling and gazing at the back, so I guess someone else special was there too! He wore the lizard shirt again. He must have 20 of 'em... Some great witty banter, but no real stories. He did mention the link between salamis and CDs, though, so he really is repeating himself a bit, but everything else was spontaneous and odd. Whee! The sound was GREAT too. Maybe 'cause I was in the front row, but the accoustic parts were just superb. Mixed perfectly even though I couldn't hear the main speakers! The electric set was a bit guitary since Robyn was playing Rock God and cranked his amp way up. He really has fun with I'm Not Me, headbanging and laughing... He really cracked up Only The Stones Remain and ended up jus tscrewing around with the guitar and laughing. And Deni was really wonderful on Beautiful Queen!!! The best Robyn show I've been to, even though he didn't play Cynthia Mask... I recorded this one, too, so if anyone is interested I can dub it for you. It came out fantastic! Here's a take at the setlist: Night Chinese Bones Balloon Man Man with a... But the first thing I noticed, adding fuel to the problems-with-A&M-fire, is that the version of "The Ghost Ship" here is not the same as (nor, in my opinion, nearly as good as) the one that appeared on the "Balloon Man" single. I assume that Robyn is not able to release that version, since it was under his A&M contract. It's nice having two versions, though, even the demo that the Y&O version seems to be. "The Ghost Ship" is one of my favourite Robyn pieces, and it's interesting to compare the slight lyrical changes. Another thing: someone asked about the song "Eight Miles High" from the "So You Think You're In Love" CD single. Robyn does not change the lyrics, and it's a faithful, rather beautiful rendition of the Byrds song. However, during an instrumental break he says "In 1965 the Byrds first visited Great Britain. I was 12. You weren't even born yet." The other song on that single is "Watch Your Intelligence," which is a pretty fantastic song, IMHO of course. In "You've Got" does the line "You've got a shirt(,) which is nice" mean "You have a nice shirt" or "It's nice that you have a shirt"? Hypothetical question. Thanks, Susan, for the info about the Fast Forward festival in Nijmegen. I'm thinking about going. Does anyone know about ticket pricing and availability, or how to get there? Obviously, I can get to Nijmegen by using a map, but once I'm there what do I do? Chances are, I'll just show up in a rental car.... I don't have the phone number myslef, but I can get it. Still 60 gilders (that's roughly $40) is a little too much for me, just to see Robyn. I also have to get there and all... Think "It's A Mystic Trip" or "Give Me A Spanner, Ralph." This is parallel to the way he puts different relatives in verses of "It's Not Just The Size Of A Walnut." The interesting question is "are these real people he's thinking about, or is he just looking for a good rhyme?" Now obviously the line in Ralph about "mamas like Joyce with a turned-up voice" is interesting 'cause Joyce IS Robyn's mama, but who is Joanna with the modern-day manner? Can a man have this much fun in such a short space of time? Seeing Robyn 4 times within a little more than 24 hours is definitely one way to find out. And I must say that it was one of THE most enjoyable, exciting times I've ever had (which doesn't say good things about the rest of my life). In a nutshell, Friday night was bone-meltingly good, Newbury was great, and the 'special' Saturday show was even better than Friday. By the late show Saturday he was pretty tired but still managed to pull out even more stuff we hadn't heard. Highlights: - He did "Bleeding"! I've never heard this on a boot, let along seen it. - Unlike other artists who I've seen multiple times in a row, every show was SIGNIFICANTLY different. I think the acoustic stuff was almost entirely different at each show. - The new stuff is universally great (De Chirco St., Beautiful Queen, I Am Not Me, Wide Open Star, Happy Bird Filthy Bird, Statue with a Walkman, Many Wands [I think this is called Heliotrope], Sinister But Happy, and one or two others.) - Deni Bonet and Jill Sobule were perfect compliments to Robyn. Deni sang many sarcastic tunes and Jill opened with "Don't Fuck with Me". Jill has a new album coming out tomorrow, but Deni's band is only a few months old and hopefully will record their stuff. Ken loved "Bigger" and I dug "Alone". - Meeting a bunch of great Feg's (Ken, Doug, John, Eugene, Karen, and a couple of others.) In fact I recognized a couple of them from shows around the area. - Ken, Doug and I had great fun doing the audience participation thing with Deni and Jill, wisecracking about the tunes, their shoes, their bounciness, Fabio, etc. We tried it with Robyn put he don't play that game. - Newbury Comics appearance was fun, he played: Bass, Mr. Rock 'n' Roll, Wide Open Star, Egyptian Creme, I Something You, Ghost Ship (!). - There were two electric songs that I felt didn't work: Only The Stones Remain and Driving Aloud. - On Friday night, the Cakekitchen opened. They're from New Zealand and are a bit of an acquired taste, but I thought they were great. - Also that night, Jill Sobule's mike wasn't working, so when she moved, her guitar pedal was out of place. She said to me, "You look like you know what you're doing. When I nod, press that button." So I played her foot pedal that night. The next night, she saw Ken and I and said, "Oh I'm so glad to see you guys, I've had a bad day." When her audience sing-a-long song came up, she asked Ken and I to join them on stage to sing the "Baa Yaa" parts, which we gleefully did. But then she asked us to sing the chorus to "All the Young Dudes", which we did even though I really can't sing. It was a blast. - After Robyn played a new one, I asked him when it was coming out. He said, "It'll all come out eventually. You should just get a copy of a tape of the show, it has more...life to it." I interpret this as a slagging of the whole recording/producing process. But it was interesting to see him advocate tape trading like that, even though I know he has no problem with it. - Chatting with Deni after the show, she said she and Robyn had just been working on "Beautiful Queen" in the van-ride up. She'll be joining him in the studio later this summer! I think her violin really works well with him. - Robyn's manager was a nice fellow, handing us the unused water left by the opening bands. He said one of the main reasons for the tour was for Robyn to work out the new stuff. - Talking to Robyn the first night, he was yakking about his Rio trip, and Ken and I didn't really engage him. But Saturday night went something like this: Robyn: Did you guys enjoy the show? Me: No, we went to all of them to tell you how much we don't like you. The new stuff is universally great. Robyn: Yeah, thanks. You certainly know the right things to say. Ken: I wanted to ask you about your art, I saw a picture of death eating an ice-cream cone called "Death takes a snack break." Robyn: Which one is that? Oh yeah, the one with the Hooded One. That was Andy's idea, the Hooded One eating ice-cream. Me: I imagine there'd be a big interest in prints and such. Is that something you'd sell through Mrs. Wafflehead? Robyn: Yeah, right now I'm touring and working on new stuff and there's all the old stuff out there now, maybe later. Doug: Do you know about the Internet mailing list? Robyn (says with resignation): I, I know. If I want to know what I've been up to, I know where to look. Me: We know what you do before you even do it. (Robyn turns to finish talking to another guy, we all start to leave.) Robyn: Happy internet surfing guys! Ken got the set lists for Saturday, he should be posting them shortly. With all the tapes being made, we should be able to compile a hell of a collection! I remember something about him having to bind his head up with bits of newspaper to keep his brains from oozing out, or possibly being eaten. Was anyone out there at this show? It was at the old Jonathan Swifts in harvard sq., which later became a comedy club. Aside from a million other questions/comments, What I really want to know is whether there is any firm info on UK tour dates. From what I've read so far only one date in London was mentioned. I am going to be in England from May 12 - June 8. I would love to see him again and was planning to spent a week in London, which could be scheduled around Robyn related events.( I'm also trying to get an interview, but more about that another time.) I could also travel to shows outside London, depending on where they are. I would be very grateful for any info and would be happy to meet other fegs. Robyn really doesn't seem to mind folks taping shows. At the early show on Saturday, he was even more explicit than Mitch indicated. He literally told folks to get a copy of the show from someone who was taping it. My friend and I also went to Friday's show early to talk to the manager. He wouldn't let us tape directly off the soundboard, but he would have been happy to let us tape with mics. His concern was simply the quality of a SBD->DAT recording was too high, and didn't think that was right. Unfortunately, we didn't have our act together and didn't get any tape at all. :-( The early Saturday show found Robyn the most relaxed. He bantered with the audience for 2 minutes before even starting to play the first song. He also seem a lot more inclined to tune his guitars at length. At one point, he asked the audience if we had all been there the night before, when some of us loudly answered YES!, he decided to play 'statue with a walkman' rather than the 'sinister but happy' he had on his setlist. He also got into an exchange with a photographer. He wanted to know if the film was black and white (the shirt he was wearing wasn't a good shirt for black and white) or color. He offered to go change. It was pretty funny. All in all, I didn't feel like any of his bantering at the other two shows was nearly as relaxed. It seemed to just flow during the first show. Between his immediate bantering and opening with 'surgery' and 'chinese bones', the tone for the show had been set. Personal comments: I didn't much care for the current working of 'egyptian creme'. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it doesn't have the urgency of the version I've come to love so much on 'hen'. Other slowed-down versions of his songs work great (e.g., 'heaven'), so it's not just the tempo change. I didn't feel like 'driving aloud' worked all that well either. The electric version of 'only the stones' was also pretty bizzare. Calling it "noisey" is being diplomatic. Overall highlights for me included 'heaven', 'surgery', 'chinese bones', 'beautiful girl', 'never stop bleeding', 'glass hotel', 'i'm only you', 'my wife and my dead wife'. Friday's opening of 'city of shame' followed by '52 stations' was pretty good, but I don't think the sound was quite right at the very beginning. I think I'm gonna like some of the new songs, but none of them blew me away as decisively as 'when I was dead' the first time I heard it on the PI tour. Oh. Robyn has apparently been hanging around DC fairly recently. I chatted with a non-feg fan at the show who's parents live in DC and were neighbors of where he was hanging out. He crashed a party where the band was playing once, and the neighbors have fed his parent's cat. Nothing like silly trivia; I really hope for robyn's sake he doesn't read this list too often. :-) Thomas [][][][][][][][] End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
