I thought i might share something that i saw that no one else has posted about.... if so, sorry. The Pop Life by Neil Strauss from the New York Times, today, 4/6/95 For Robyn Hitchcock, a dry spell seems to be over. Dry Spell In the last few years, the idiosyncratic English songwriter Robyn Hitchcock has been going through a strange sort of metamorphosis. "I was in Rio Recently," he said in an interview before his concerts at the Bottom Line last week, "and there was a corpse on the beach when i got there at sundown. It was lying there very still with flies on its wrists and ankles, a towel over its head. It wasn't just motionless like sunbathers and sleepers are. It's the first time I ever saw a dead human. It's funny; that's what I'm going to become someday and I've never seen one." The change that occurred in Mr. Hitchcock (huh?-ed.), who is 42, was evident not because he decided to write a song about it, but because he didn't. "What's funny is I didn't actually write anything about the corpse," Mr. Hitchcock said. "It's something that I would have written about in the past, but no so much now." Unfortunately, Mr. Hitchcock doesn't have an outlet for his new material. Though Rhino Records recently reissued eight solo albums he recorded after his influential group, the Soft Boys, broke up in 1980, Mr. Hitchcock is not signed to a record label. Since "Respect,: his 1992 album on A & M records, he has released only a three-song single on K Records, a tiny label based in Olympia, Wash. "After 'Respect,' I got very menopausal," he said. "I think I was just burned out. My father had died, I'd been unsettled from traveling a lot, then I moved to the States and lived in Washington, D.C., for a bit with somebody I was going to marry. But it didn't work. And I just didn't write anything for eight months." Mr. Hitchcock's personal stamp, which is not quite madness or looniness, as it's often described, but normalcy with an imaginative or symbolic twist at the top, is still on all the songs. But his subject matter, which was once dominated by the small, squirmy members of the insect and amphibian worlds, has moved up on the evolutionary ladder and is about more warm-blooded creatures like cats. This is in part a function of Mr. Hitchcock's improving self-esteem. "I was a white middle-class kid from a wealthy background, and I used to hate myself and I didn't want to be human," he said. "I spent a long time feeling as if I was walking along carrying my head floating in the air like a balloon. Or I'd feel like an angel's head sewn on to a baboon's body, which I think is pretty much the human condition. But now I feel a bit more human and less harsh. And I suppose I'm at least halfway through my life. There's no point in trying to stamp on the rest of it like a cigarette end." (*fin*) for the record, i think the manifesto is great, and i think it still stands up, though i suppose we have forsaken the advice of our prophet. oh, wait, what was i thinking? i really thought someone else would have seen it, for some reason, seeing his face in something as serious or whatever the Times feels it stands for these days, was heartening. and i agree, a label would be nice, but i don't see how my whining about will help. and bayard, welcome back. Was the 3-29 show broadcast on the radio ? Did anyone here tape it ? Please send e-mail ... We were pleasantly surprised to find Robyn standing in front on the 9:30 Club, smoking a cigarette (!), when we walked up. Feeling a little bit wicked, I walked up to him and said, "Robyn, do you know how far I've come to see you play ?", unzipped my coat and displayed my Viva SeaTac T-shirt (~50 were made for the "secret" second Seattle show). The look on his face was priceless. "My God, did you really come all that far to see *me* play ?", he said. I did have to confess that my presence in DC in time to see both shows was a lucky accident. Robyn graciously chatted with us and signed autographs. Deni Bonet's set list for Tue 3-28-95 : Sun Promises Please Die Alone Big (great song !) Then I'll Luv Ya Deni's set list for Wed 3-29 had one different song. I thought she was really good, but I grew up with and am partial to the violin. Her band and own material showed a great deal of promise to me. Jill Sobule was the second opener. I wasn't all that impressed; though they're getting some airplay at the moment, musically I don't think they have what it takes to become a major act. About half of Robyn's set list changed between the 2 nights. Also, on 3-28, the encore was acoustic and on 3-29 the encore was electric. Not the song I would have chosen, but I'm not complaining; just seeing him on TV was good enough! What was with those facial expressions; kind of shell shocked; or like a deer caught in headlights. I know he's been on TV before, so I wonder what was going through his mind. When he was really getting into it, practically bouncing up and down, really excited, singing the "I didn't know it could be like this, be like this..." part, and then BAM, went back to the somber expression, and slow "I something you..." part, that was just great. This reminded me of young Peter Cook, (like someone already mentioned), specifically in the movie _Bedazzled_ when he sang, "You fill me with inertia." Same even voice, almost a monotone, but I know that's not the right word: monotone conjures up an image of tedium, and this was just the opposite! And is the in-store at 3pm or 5pm now??? OK, I think people may want to know this: Newbury Comics is a pretty cool record chain. The signing is at 3PM on Saturday. To get there, go to Boston and follow the signs for the T. Park. Get on a T. It's 85 cents. Coming from the West, you'll probably get on a green line train inbound, so you'll have to switch to the red line at park street station (underground). Take the Red Line outbound to Harvard Square. You'll come out at the "main" square, near the gates of Harvard with the Coop and the Wursthaus and all. Right down the road from there is a "mall" called the Garage 'cause it's built in an old (and small) parking garage. Newbury Comics is on the second floor. Is everyone sure the signing is in Harvard Square and not on Newbury Street? > And are people getting together before hand?? Where at?? People are meeting at the Middle East Cafe at 7 which is right next door to TT's in Central Square in Cambridge. Note that it is difficult (though not impossible) to walk (or even find your way) from Harvard Square to Central Square if you don't know the area. My advice is to take the T. From Harvard Square, get on inbound and get off at the next stop, Central Square. When you get off, look for the Middle East. It's just about a block from the stop, so walk in one direction and if you don't see it, go the other way instead. > If someone could give me directions, we are coming from the WEST via I-90 > (NY Thruway, and then we'll get on the Mass Turnpike I guess and keep going > from there) Well, yes, the Mass Pike ends in Boston, so you'll hit it ok! *grin* Right off the Pike there are some "park and ride the T" places, though I never take the Pike so I'm not sure exactly where. Ask a toll attendant? Like I said above, you'll get on the green line most likely. Go inbound to Park Street and change to the Red Line outbound. > Another real treat would be if Robyn played his harmonica!! He does. A lot. I also got to see our Mr. Hitchcock sitting in a bright green blazer outside for a photo shoot for about thirty minutes when I was waiting in line for the show. He seemed very shy, and no one had the guts to approach him and say anything. Oddly, at the last show, he actually came out and stood at the bar watching the opening act. He was standing with a short brunette woman. They had their arms around each other and looked like they were pretty intimate. Any guesses who this was? The Bottom Line was packed, but no one approached him the entire time he stood there! He is quite an intimidating presence, let me tell you. In addition to my desire to hear Robyn (always), I was just re-listening to all my Don Dixon CDs and loving them all over again. Does anyone know if Mountain Stage is broadcast in Los Angeles/Southern California? Please e-mail me privately so as not to annoy the entire list. Thanks.
