Rhino are NOT domestically released in Canada (neither are Rykodisc for that matter). They are distributed by Denon (much like Cargo distribute Sub Pop etc.). But when Rhino/Rykodisc put stuff out it takes 2-3 weeks (for no known reason as far as I can tell) to reach Canada (then another 1-3 weeks to reach the record stores depending on where you live). If you are in Toronto and Montreal you can usually get them almost as soon as they make it here but if you are NOT (like London where I am or Halifax where you are - BTW, why Halifax???) then it takes even longer. I only got IODOT etc. (the first 3 reissues) at the beginning of March and I STILL have not gotten the remaining 6 I have ordered (nor the two Rykodisc Costello reissues I ordered at the same time) so the Halifax stores are not to blame - Denon and Rhino/Rykodisc are!!! Anyone know if and when Robyn pursued higher education, and if so, what did he major in? My guess would be marine biology. BTW, I also watched him on Conan, which was the first time I'd seen him on TV in a long while. Does he always sing that "you're my HungarianJewishAustralianAmerican girl" line in the song? It sounded improvised to me. If any of you missed the witty banter between Robyn and Conan, I think it went along these lines: CO'B- What kind of guitar is that? RH- It's one a friend of mine from the south of England made. CO'B-Can I have it? RH- (pauses for a second) Natch. And that was it. Robyn came across much better the time I saw him on Letterman playing Madonna of the Wasps and he ran out did a crazy spoken word intro before starting the song. Of course, on the back of _Globe of Frogs_ it makes a poor introduction to the music, since Robyn has seldom been more resolutely elliptical than on this "Weirding Out With Uncle Bob" exercise, but viewed from the perspective of 1995 it strikes a real nerve. If you have one that it is printed correctly, then it may be the collectible one. Which ever version has the low numbers, would in my opinion, be more collectible. For that matter, all of the glass fish cds should have more of a collectible value now that Rhino has reprinted them. I don't know what it is like elsewhere, but it is difficult, if not impossible, to get them anymore in the Portland, OR area. Regardless of whether they are "valuable" or not, the market for collectibles is pretty slow now. Value is also dependent on how bad someone wants it. If you have any Glass Fish cds then I would hold on to them, I wouldn't sell them to replace them with the Rhino reprints. Imports tend to be pretty collectible in the long run. I know this is getting long-winded so I'll stop here. It's just that I have been a collector of various things for years and I tend to speak at length about it. Good. I'm glad you approve. 8) >To me, he's such a good guitar player, I find myself imagining him using >different guitars, to broaden his sound and creative palette. Two things. The first thing is, when you find something that works, and works _well_, you tend to stick with that. The other thing is Tone. And I spelled that with a capital T on purpose. Tele's have a very distinctive tone, as do Strats, Les Pauls, etc, all _different_ and unique. I used to play a Tele until I got my *ahem squire ahem* Strat. Originally I wanted to use it 40% of the time, with the other 60% taken up by the Tele. Eventually, the Strat songs increased to 50%, then 60%, then 75% until one day I realized that I wasn't using the Tele on anything at _all_. I ended up selling it about three years ago to a friend of mine who promised me "visitation rights" and complete unargued access when I wanted to use it in the studio or live. And you know what? I haven't even asked him for it, and it wasn't because of the playability. The Tele was a much better guitar, and far more playable than the squire Strat was. It was the squire's Tone, which wasn't far away from a top-line Fender's. That guitar went through about four years of _hard_ use. Finally it began falling apart (pickup screws getting stripped, in dire need of a fret job, bad connections, etc), and rather than dumping money into getting a bottom of the line Fender up to snuff, two years ago I got the '62 re-issue I use now. And I never even considered buying anything but a Strat. I seem to have gone off on quite a tangent here about my guitar history, so I'll bring this somewhat back to Robyn. Someone's guitar style can be said to be made up of 1 part playing, and two parts sound. Within sound is the actual _sound_ of the guitar, and the _tone_ of the guitar, which are far more different than a layman realizes. So let's compare Strats & Teles (which _do_ after all have a similar _sound_ but a completely different _tone_, as upposed to Strats and Les Pauls which have completely different sounds _and_ tones). Someone like Robyn could certainly play both (and I'm sure he probably owns a Strat or four). He picks up a Strat, and while he plays like Robyn, and probably even sounds like Robyn, his tone would be, not necessarily wrong, but _off_. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that there comes a point where a guitar player hears himself on one particular guitar and says _this_ is me. Robyn with his Tele, Jimmy Page with his Les Paul (and _he_ used a Tele through the Yardbirds _and_ LZ's first album) hell, even someone like (is he unhip?) Steve Howe, who regularly bounces back and forth between several Gibsons, a Strat, a Tele, and a Rick, _always_ (according to interviews) goes back to his ES-355. ---Mike (I am Strat man) ----------------------- "People ask me why I'm obsessed with fish, but it's not true. I had asked him if he knew anything about the english CD5, but he thought I was smoking something... ..so I went back. In the small vinyl 7" there were at least 5 copies of the Hitchcock single, in my merriment I decided to go to the CD section (I still don't have all the Rhino things! Low funds!) and there I found what seemed to be someone ditching his Rhino promos (he swapped the cases for smashed ones) I picked up EoL and GLTHO! (I either had the rest of the used ones or they must have previously sold) - and then - underneath the stack of used 'Perspex Island' CDs was the 'My Wife And My Dead Wife' CD single! Right on! I hadn't noticed any messages admitting to a confirmed existance of this beast (although I'll admit to losing about 40 messages a day due to my old account and me being lazy...) Well, juse in case - It does exist (and it does say 'For Promotional Use Only' in REALLY hard to read dark green on dark green type) - It has the live My Wife and the three 'K' songs... I don't know how the sound compares to the 7" (since I'll probably never listen to it) but the CD sounds great! A case of Robyn doing his own fashion reviews ? And Polly On The Shore: Owen noted that was a Fairport song, and was credited as such on the 25th anniversary CD. I checked my copy of 'Fairport Nine' which says that the lyrics were 'trad., arr Swarbrick/Lucas' - I don't know how 'trad' they were, but I guess if they could hijack traditional lyrics and call them their own, then so can Robyn. The music claims to be original, however (on the Fairport version). Does anyone know the 'rules' about using traditional songs and calling them your own ? A friend played me some Sharon Shannon the other day (accordeon stuff, great for jumping around your living room to when you've had a couple of beers...). Her sleevenotes for several of the tracks said 'I learnt this from so-and-so' but she managed to get the writing credit for most of the tracks. I guess the old blues guys did it all the time. Second, Conan should have at least cared enough to know that "Y&O" isn't the first re-issue, but the last in a series and all unreleased besides. Now... as to Robyn's choice of "I Something You," personally I would have rather he did something off of Y&O ("Ghost Ship," "September Cones," "Surgery," and "Birdshead" come to mind) or one of the other releases ("Autumn Is Your Last Chance," "Glass Hotel," "Winchester," any number of tunes...). But by doing ISY, Robyn shows the world that he would much rather be promoting a _brand_ new album rather than eight re-issues and one rareities collection. As to the song itself, it's a good song, but not, IMHO a great song. Besides, Robyn bad is better than 90% of other people's good. Anyway, ISY strikes me as well as being a "knock-off," kinda like "Clean Steve," a song that maybe we're not ment to take 100% seriously. I'll have to reserve judgement on the rest of the new material until Friday and Saturday. ---Mike ----------------------- "People ask me why I'm obsessed with fish, but it's not true. To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu I was just listening to "the Bible of Bop", which is basically a record by Kimberley Rew playing guitar and singing on eight tracks. Three of these tracks are done by the Soft Boys as we know and love them, with Robyn on guitar, Matthew Seligman on bass (not Andy), and Morris on drums. The interesting thing is that Kimberley is doing the lead vocals instead of Robyn. The three Soft Boys tracks are most excellent...distinctively Soft Boys in terms of guitar sound, especially. Kimberley does a great job with the vocals, which set me thinking...what would it have been like if Robyn and Kimberley had both sang on various songs in the Soft Boys? I think it would have been very interesting...Kimberley seems to have a much poppier musical sense than Robyn. Anyways, I'm just sort of rambling...but if anybody encounters this record, pick it up, it's very pleasant. Besides the Soft Boys tracks it has Kimberley with the dBs, and also with the Waves. daveR. To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu (fegmaniax) Date: Thu, 6 Apr 1995 11:01:45 -0400 (EDT) Good morning everyone! So I DID go to the RH show at Toad's last night. It was grrrreat! Well, actually, it was only pretty great. I was going to meed a pile of feggers at Pepe's pizza, but got out of work an hour late (meetings...). So I decided to go to meet them late. Well, being from New Haven but not for a long time I decided to follow BritPop's instructions in reverse... Silly me... After driving aloud (oops, around) for half an hour I decided to just go to Toad's. I got there in time to get ripped off for beer ($3 for a can of RR!) and to catch both openers. Deni wasn't awful, but not something I'd go out and buy. I really didn't find the violin annoying (much). The next band (what was their name?) was really good! After the show I was downstairs preparing my recorder and I ran into them. They're great people! They've got a video on MTV's 120 minutes a week from Sunday with Fabio in it! Yow! And Robyn poked his head out and looked at us. He looked upset and later said that Mishy was sick, so he probably wasn't in a great mood... So Robyn came on, played accoustic. Here's the setlist 'near as I remember. I recorded it too, but haven't gotten the list written yet. Accoustic: Cynthia Mask Shuffling Across The Flagstones (like Chinese Water Python) Man With A Woman's Shadow De Churico Street Egyptian Cream Sinister (?) The Devil I'm Only You I Something You Queen Elvis The Yip Song Electric: I'm Not Me (?) Autumn Is Your Last Chance Never Stop Bleeding Driving Aloud Arms of Love Encore: Bring Me To The Cheese (?) She Worships The Sun (?) Deni played with him (violin) for many of these songs. I felt that she added to lots to some (like Autumn) but really mutilated Dirving Aloud. In fact, as good a song as it is, I think DA should be reserved for Egyptians shows. It just doesn't sound good solo! Some new songs, though. De Churico Street was great as was She Worships... And it was great to hear Bleeding! As for the Yip Song and I Something You being "bad" singles, let me tell you about the girl sitting next to me. She just recently "got into" Robyn because she thought "that Yip Song" was so great! And she was crazy for "I Somehitng You" too! Perhaps they're not so bad after all? Zippy little pop songs that stick in your mind are just what makes people want to listen more! And they handed around Robyn Rhino Reissue fliers. Just a souvenir to those of us who know about the reissues, but cool nonetheless! So is anyone going to Providence tonight? Stephen PS: I can sample any of these songs and put them on the FTP site if anyone would like and I'm always open to trades! Most record companies will only pay mechanical royalties on ten songs per album, so there is no reason that he would do so to appropriate money considering his affinity for multitudes of tracks. For traditional songs that are in the public domain, I think there is some grayness in what is allowed. I don't think there is a clearly defined set of rules so much as some accepted practice that allows one to rearrange a song that allows the arranger the writing credit. One may declare a work "derivitive" of another when it is copyrighted and when one clears his/her song with a performance rights organization. The work is then given authorship to the derivitee (is that a word?), but the royalty granted becomes less. (eg.- A hit in the seventies was Bouree by _Ian Anderson_ (of Jethro Tull)- that is really a lie, but he did rearrange it, and probably took some share of the possible royalties. J.S. Bach could not be reached for comment, but he had stopped collecting well before the advent of the vinyl disc.) Actually a great deal of classical and modern classical composers did, and do, this to enhance certain aspects of songs or to learn a different style of writing. In the case of the blues guys, there are many of them that were never compensated for their writings. Elvis was credited for writing blues songs that had been recorded while he was an infant. Some of the bluesers made minor changes to each other's songs and called them their own. There is a singular chord progression in so many cases, and it seems that many open with "I woke up this mornin'". It seems to me that it is difficult to sue for copyright infringement based upon a chord progression, but a particular melody, or arrangement, or even an intro to a song if done verbatim are all items that have been sued successfully.
