It's all the same Vera Lynn, popular Brit singer during the '40s, especially associated with performing for the Tommies during the war. Given Roger Waters' fixation on his father's death in WWII, it's no surprise to see her cropping up on _The Wall_ and _The Final Cut_; her appearance in "The Yip Song" is as the equivalent of nose art on the U.S. B-17s--"Vera Lynn, Vera Lynn, painted on my tailfin..." And I'm not remembering the song she was most associated with during the war... "The White Cliffs of Dover," perhaps? She sang songs such as "The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot" (featured in the film The Wall, but not on the album), and "We'll Meet Again" (which the song Vera on The Wall is referencing when it says "Remember how you said that we would meet again some sunny day. This song was also the closing theme from the great film Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb). Floyd invokes her because of the story's flashbacks to the death of Pink's father in WWII, and how obviously Pink and his father did not meet again. Robyn's use is somewhat similar, imho, although perhaps a bit more oblique. The Yip song is full of combat-hospital imagery, and I think he was calling on Very Lynn as some sort of sacred icon of safety. Then again, I've never been right before. In one of the recent CD's liner notes Robyn mentions that the reason there were three versions of "Can Of Bees" was because they kept trying to get it right. I'm pretty sure few (if any) of these new bonus tracks were ever candidates for the "right" version of any album. Most sound like early demos with Robyn making little attempt to sing with any authority. I think it was John Lennon who once compared listening to a demo track to reading an author's notes after you had already read the book. The finished product is brilliant; why expose the rough draft? Those added demo tracks aren't going to help Rhino recruit any new Robyn Hitchcock fans, IMO. -RUSS (plenty happy to have HTGPrince, Can Opener, Higsons, and all of Y&O on CD!) rreynolds@ksjo.com (but what about "deck of cards"?) PS-the second verse of "Surgery" sounds like it has one set of lyrics sung over a different set of lyrics. I imagine SOMEBODY on this list took the time to decipher the burried lyrics. You can always stop the album before it reaches them. I agree that it does seem daft to expose everyone to a rough draft, but they are useful for hearing those lyrics you can never quite decipher from the original. It's also interesting to hear lyrics which were later changed for the "proper" version, or solos which were later cut. I prefer the choice to listen to or ignore the demo versions, than to just hear serious collectors talking about them - thinking I'm missing out on something amazing. I'd hoped to write a whole long note about the three shows that I saw in D.C. and NY, but with this much work on my desk I'll have to content myself to a couple of quick sentences. First, Robyn was standing in front of the 9:30 club before both of the D.C. shows. If you're at all interested in meeting him in person, it might be a good bet to get to the show a little early. I had a whole list of questions that I wanted to ask him, but of course I choked when he came out and started talking to me. I did get some great news though, he says that he is planning on going back to the studio this summer and the sessions will include Deni Bonet. I meant to ask him if the Egyptians would also be there, but of course I forgot. He also talked about the fact that he really didn't like Washington D.C. that much which would explain why he didn't appear to happy on stage here. He was definitely a bit more loose in the New York show that I saw. The music quality was excellent at all the shows, but in NY he actually seemed to be having fun. He did, however, refuse to smile despite repeated requests from the crowd. Well, hopefully more later. I know what you mean too, and it isn't just fashion - it's the whole psychological feel of the thing. There are times when I, for one, get a certain self-conscious feeling about the guitar I use. Most of the songs I've written are vaguely acoustic-ish numbers, written while playing my beaten-up Ovation semiacoustic. The only thrashy songs I've written were on an ancient Fender copy (gulp, an Aria...). Makes sense, you'd say, writing acoustic-y stuff on an acoustic and garage sounds on a scummy electric. Yes, but there's more to it than that. I've recorded myself playing the quieter numbers on the electric, and they sound OK, in some cases better than on the Ovation, and vice versa. But they didn't "feel right" when I played them, and I sure as hell counldn't have written them with it. I could picture myself with the incongruous instrument, and it was off-putting. I wrote thrash because I was using an electric, if you see what I mean. Robyn with a Flying Vee might well lead him to write or play in a whole different style. OK, I'll post a blatant plug. My collegue and housemate, Dave, is playing at The Boat Race, Cambridge, UK on Saturday 8th April if any Cambridge residents are interested. I'll try and dig it out and post it (If I'm too lazy, someone please email me and remind me). He says that the "yip" is saying yes to the surgery - when it's hopeless anyway ("septisemia always wins"). I thought the line "Forces sweetheart, I'm your twin" was to do with his father hallucinating and seeing Vera Lynn instead of Robyn, but that might just me a product of my fertile imagination. If I'm right, then it's a pretty funny line in it's way. Clean Steve ----------- Just who is Clean Steve, and why does Robyn do such great versions of this song live?! Anyone who hasn't heard the "Give it to the Thoth Boys" version should buy the tape from Mrs Wafflehead right now. I've not noticed Clean Steve's ID being discussed on the list - I did even start searching the archives a while back, but it was taking ages, so I gave up. Still, the English singer-songwriter is much loved in Washington, and at the 9:30 club on Wednesday, the second of two nights there, he was greeted rapturously by an audience that demanded two sets of encores. Hitchcock is most effective when playing with the Egyptians, his versatile backing duo, but acquitted himself well accompanied only by his own guitar (and, on some songs, Deni Bonet's violin). Though he mostly played acoustic guitar, he didn't restrict himself merely to almost-folkie ballads like "Arms of Love." He also managed to perform such elaborate production numbers as "Driving Aloud (Radio Storm)" and "The Yip Song"-the latter "about death from cancer," he explained-and rockers such as "So You Thing You're In Love" and "Only the Stones Remain." The latter, originally recorded by Hitchcock's Soft Boys, was outfitted with an electric guitar intro that could hardly have been less folkie. This isn't ment to be a flame at >>the original poster, but with as good a sound as some of those guitars >>get, Robyn with a Flying Vee or Explorer would just _look_ wrong. That's me -- the original poster, that is, and I quite like where this thread has headed. Anyway, after having read others' comments about those guitars looking "wrong" with Robyn, I tend to agree. However, I made the original post with the concept in mind of Robyn as a guitar player, i.e., a man who knows his instrument and is more concerned with the sounds it can make than its appearance [but, yes I agree, appearance is important. Morris would look *real* funny behind, say, the 4,000-piece drum kit Alex Van Halen used to use, and lord knows Andy would look like a fool with one of them black stick basses (Steinberger?)]. To me, he's such a good guitar player, I find myself imagining him using different guitars, to broaden his sound and creative palette. It's just when I'm listening to a song when Robyn really lets it all hang out with his electric guitar playing, like say on the new rambling alternate take on "I Watch the Cars". Or, wouldn't it be neat to let him loose at The Plastic with a Theramin, some PlaySkool toys, a Moog, an ARP, some sandpaper, a few dwarves, a guitar or two, and maybe a producer like Bill Laswell. I mean, I wonder how far out Robyn could get? Is "The Pit of Souls" it? Does he have it in him to do his own White Album? =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Gene Hopstetter, Jr. + gene@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu Writer/Layout/WWW Guy + Tulane Computing Services http://yodelling-hoover.tcs.tulane.edu/GeneHome.html =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ [][][][][][][][][][] From: sfoskett@mailhost.viewlogic.com (Stephen Foskett) Subject: Re: Robyn on Conan Date: Tue, 4 Apr 1995 11:32:23 -0400 (EDT) Cc: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu > Yay! Date: Tue, 04 Apr 95 11:44 Did anybody else catch Robyn on Conan O'Brian last night? I haven't watched the whole tape that I made, but I think that he was only on during the last two minutes to sing I Something You. Great to see him on TV, but I'm not sure if it was exactly the right audience for the song. He had this look like he wanted to launch in to a story when it was all over but Conan was over there pretty quickly with the standard great song quote and the quick cut to the commercial. Conan introduced him by holding up a copy of Y & O and saying it was the first of nine reissues by Rhino Records. Now it seems to me that it is neither a reissue nor the first of the Rhino CDs but IMHO its pretty typical for the show. On another note, I like Y & O more every time I hear it. However, am I the only one that is disappointed that the song You and Oblivion isn't actually on it? I'm starting quite a list of songs that I've heard on this tour that I'd really like to hear on the next CD including : She Was Sinister But She Was Happy, You and Oblivion, DeChirico Street, Statue w/ a Walkman, and of course I Want to Cheese You. At the last New York show he introduced I Something You as being written about the same person the I Want to Cheese You was, just at a later point in the relationship. Joe P.S. I thought RH's performances was OK but not stunning. The main problem is that on that type of show you're on-3 minute song-off and Robyn could not do any of his funny banter etc. that make his performances stunning. I liked how he played etc. but he's better in concert! And did everyone noticed how "freaked" out RH was when they came back from commercial? Esp. during the credits where he seemed to ahve no clue as to what was happening - VERY very bizarre But it's cool to have RH playing anywhere on international TV so I'm thankful for that....
