I had never heard of 'duckweed' before. Mike. Fiend Before The Shrine ----------------------- I stumbled with a friend of mine To see a fiend before the shrine With pointed eyes and furry breath He summoned men who faked a death Within a cloister full of ferns An ivy twining 'round the urns That brink with duckweed and with snails The fiend his mouth was full of nails Oh come and see my swarming shrine His little pointed eyes did shine Forgot his life and life his lust And will be after after you are dust The shrine, It writhed with giblets and with hairs And little tongues in flickering pairs And throats that grew from pats of cheese And then came out behind the knees A pumpkin smiled, and from its beak A pair of scaly legs did peek With squirming elders for its hair And from that midst an eye did stare It winked at me, as if to say You've seen enough, now go away I sing of life, I sing of death Until I might run out of breath I stumbled with a friend of mine To see a fiend before a shrine With pointed eyes and septic ears I knew this fiend did last for years. An excerpt from it appeared on the back of the 1982 "Eaten By Her Own Dinner" single; I think "Eaten" was supposed to be Robyn's parting gift to the world when he retired from the music biz after "Groovy Decay." When I talked with Robyn at the Neurotic Records in-store back in September, I told him that I had read "The Professor" to several groups of people and everyone always wanted to know what happened next. He said, "oh, The Professor. I wrote that with Fletcher many years ago. We got together a few more times to work on it, but he seized up -- like a mule -- and wouldn't write any more. I think he still has the bit that we did, somewhere in his house. No, it's no use you writing him, it would just drive him further into seclusion. Drop me a letter when I get back to London and I'll see if I can't get Fletcher moving." Well he did finally get "The Professor" to me -- and finished it, too. Though I must admit it would have been cheaper just to mail me the thing. I'm pleased to see that I've played my small part in (invisible) history, though I know the people wondering "how it comes out" are still not going to be very satisfied when I finally continue the story. - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Thu, 30 Mar 1995 00:50:05 -0500 (EST) From: the magus To: fegmaniax Subject: mountain stage does anyone know how to go about getting tickets for the mountain stage show? how much they are? thanks so much for helping out this puzzled feg who might be planning a roadtrip.... cory "zurich is stained and it's not my fault" http://www.duke.edu/~car3 [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Thu, 30 Mar 1995 07:12:42 -0600 (CST) From: MILES GOOSENS Subject: Re: Mountain Stage To: peoples@moe.coe.uga.edu Cc: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu WEIRDO sez about Mountain Stage: > Well, the show will most likely be taped and then edited for the > hour long show. Is it just a hallucination of my fevered brain, or did someone say Robyn will be on the Conan O'Brien show on April 3? I looked it up last night and didn't see him listed. Matthew Sweet, however, is listed as a guest on his show this Friday night. Did I mix the date up? (Accidentally deleted the post!) :( I've also been thinking (admittedly, more than I should) about the man who someone posted about, who was spotted at a show trying to film Robyn with his camcorder, and was asked to leave. Why didn't they just ask the man to leave his camera with the management until after the show? Wasn't it highly unfair to boot him out? I know it probably wasn't cool for him to videotape Robyn without permission, but who were these bouncer-types that took it upon themselves to punish him that way? It makes me wonder if I even dare to *audio* tape Robyn's show if he ever comes my way again. If it's against management policy, I'd fully expect to be asked nicely to stop it, and perhaps turn over my machine for the duration of the show; I certainly would not want to be thrown out, after paying for a ticket. And heck, while I'm here, I guess I should say that in response to a fairly recent post, I simply can't help wondering about Robyn's personal life. If you really love someone's work, how can you NOT wonder? As a really cool Robyn fan said to me recently, if Robyn comes on the list and says "Stop wondering about my personal life," I'll try my hardest but until then, this Enquiring mind wants to know! You're probably thinking of the back of the 'Eaten By Her Own Dinner' 7", which contains this paragraph: "TECHNICAL INFORMATION: These are a random selection of songs from various sessions over the past year. 'Eaten by Her Own Dinner' was recorded in November '81 and represents my most recent attempt to work in a recording studio- my ideal sound would be on a cassette machine in Green Park underground. The accordion was added at Bill Carter's suggestion. 'Listening to the Higsons' was taped by Matthew Seligman on a portastudio in a barn in Sussex, not far from where Dennis Healey lives, on a full moon. Your stereo may need a new needle but the vocal sound is intentional. At the beginning of the song I play a wok (Chinese cooking utensil) 1/3 full of water, tipped through an angle of 40 degrees to vary the pitching. Using my left forearm to cradle it against my chest, I struck it repeatedly with a wooden spoon. The last track, 'Dr. Sticky', was spontaneously recorded at Smithsound, and hasn't been tampered with before or since. This song is not a dig at anybody; it is a celebration of fact, much like the Falklands victory parade. James approximated the rhythym I was playing on the guitar with the drum machine, and added some percussion of his own. James, incidentally, is going to be an ostrich. At last the full version of 'the Professor' is ours! It was a clever ploy to divide the story between "Y&O" and "Invisible Hitchcock". Now I'll have to go by "IH"... Anyways, I think "Y&O" is a very pleasant collection. Y'all should dash out and by it, if for no other reason than at least to hear Robyn sing a groovy song about squid ('Victorian Squid'). I still haven't decided how well all the songs fit with each other...with the exception of 'Mr. Rock n' Roll', which I just do not like at all, I enjoy all of the tracks. One thing I found interesting was that instrumentally, 'Dust' sounds very very similar to the demo version of 'the Leopard' on the new "Element of Light" CD. Does anybody else hear this? Another interesting thing I noticed is that in the booklet where the musicians are listed, besides noting the guy responsible for art direction, design, etc., there is a notation of a Judge. This Judge's name is Michele Noach. Would I be correct in assuming that this is Robyn's new girlfriend? If so (or even if not), why is she given the title of 'Judge' and listed in the credits? Finally, I have to say I was really pleased to read in the liner notes to the new "Element of Light" that Robyn's favorite tune on that album is 'Airscape'. Being my favorite Robyn tune, I'm glad that it means so much to Robyn as well. daveR. Agreed. It was excellent. Since there were a number of other list members present, I'll let them tell their own stories and comments, but throw in my obligatory $.02 on sundry items.... Firstly, _don't_ miss the opening acts. Both Deni Bonet and her band and Jill Sobule are wonderful. Rarely is one privileged to see opening acts of such quality. Both women are wonderful songwriters, and I really enjoyed them alot - all the more surprising considering I had never heard any material by either of them. Deni's material has more of a folk feel to it, and Jill's a more "modern rock" feel. The guys in Deni's band - Andy and Joe, are nice, too. Talked to them for a little after the 3/29 show. Buy them a beer! I think Robyn had something to do with their touring - Joe was excited that he got to use an amp belonging to Billy Bragg! For the instrument-minded, for the electric portions Robyn was playing a black & white Fender something-caster. For the sartorial- minded, he was wearing the usual print shirts, with the obligatory shirt change between the end of the set and the encore. I liked the shirt with lizards on it. In general, I'd also have to add that Robyn's arrangements with Deni playing along really add something to some of those songs, with Arms of Love and Never Stop Bleeding come to mind. Her violin playing adds color to the songs, giving them more of an emotional appeal in some parts than they would have otherwise. and Sharon northers@nwrel.org says re taping Robyn: >It makes me wonder if I even dare to *audio* tape Robyn's show if he ever >comes my way again. If it's against management policy, I'd fully expect to >be asked nicely to stop it, and perhaps turn over my machine for the >duration of the show; I certainly would not want to be thrown out, after >paying for a ticket. Here's a story with a happy ending. After the end of Tuesday night's show, I was just sitting on the edge of the stage, chatting with some fellow fegmaniacs. The soundman suddenly came up to me and said that he'd have to ask me for the tape I had made of that evenings' concert (I'd been surreptitiously taping it with only the tie-tac-type mic visible). So I pulled the tape out of the walkman and handed it to him. He took it and said he would ask Robyn whether it was OK that I had taped the show. He comes back to me about 5 minutes later with the tape, returning it, along with a business card, saying that Robyn had no problems with it, and that if turned out OK I should send a copy of the show to his manager's address on the card. For the curious, and for those others of you who might be taping upcoming shows, here's his manager's address - perhaps if he got copies of the shows from all us tapers he would be pleased. (Maybe even suggest a "best of" from Mrs. Wafflehead?). Manager = Peter Jenner, Sincere Management, 421 Harrow Rd., London, W10 4RD, England. [Note: this isn't to imply that one definitely does have implicit permission to tape his shows. I'm just relating what happened in my instance. Use your own judgement. Maybe even ask Robyn first, if you happen to see him before the show.] Also, fwiw, when I was writing a fellow taper's address on the back of Robyn's manager's business card, fellow taper asks me: "Is that _the_ Peter Jenner?" I said, "I guess. Is there a _the_ Peter Jenner?" And he then said something about this Peter Jenner person being Pink Floyd's management. (Another Syd Barrett connection perhaps??) Anyway, for the patient, copies of tapes for both nights at the 9:30 Club will be available. Analog, audience, recorded from front of the stage, pretty decent quality although not amazing or anything. However, since the second show may have been broadcast (we'll find out soon), for the moment I'll only offer the first for now. Just email me, and we'll work out details. Looking forward to seeing more setlists from upcoming shows.... Robyn asked everyone to dub copies for him and send them to Peter Jenner -- I think he especially wants recordings of extemporaneous songs he dashes off in-concert. Do I have the eerie power to affect the mind of the great Robyn? Keep in mind that he doesn't know my name ... and listen to the following story, from my brother Mike in Austin. He went to hear R.H. at SXSW, getting in free because his roommate was the main sound guy for the show. After the acoustic set, it was discovered that the amp wasn't plugged in, and Robyn got annoyed and stomped off stage. The sound guys got the amp running, and Tom (Mike's roommate) went backstage to try to convince Robyn to come back out. He was unenthusiastic, saying "do they really want me to come back out?" "sure! they're all clapping for you out there." "no, no," Robyn says, "it's been too long ... it's time for the next band ..." (further discouraged excuses ensure). Chorus: G Nothing, not a flash, G D Or a ripple, left to prove you were here, A But then you move daveR. I imagine that if Robyn began playing a Gibson flying vee, or practically any other solid-body Gibson, it would affect his musical style. If he was writing with these instruments, his songs would be different. That is certainly not to say that it would be bad. I believe that with the retro Genders (Fenders), this difference would not have to be drastic; but with the Gibbons (Gibsons), there are many voicings and sounds that wouldn't work the same way. This has been aluded to by others. Then there is the fashion statement, which I believe also influences the music. Would the anachronistic visual quality of playing a Flying Vee, or a Firebird force Robyn to play some amalgam of Randy Rhoads and Lynyrd Skynyrd material? Would he have evolved into a blazing Steve Vai if he were playing one of those behandled seven-string Ibanez guitars? I think that some of these energy evocations might have worked well in the Soft Boys, but his solo and "E" music, as it is, just wouldn't be the same with them. (Note: this does not mean that it would be worse. I do sometimes wonder how it could possibly sound better, though.) Personal guitar info: My current fave of all my electric guitars I have ever owned is a seventy-two-thousand-pound (hyperbole invokation) butcher block maple, but painted red, ~1979 SD Curlee. It has a single coil (Hitchcock style) neck position pickup for "jangling" (which I do mostly nowadays), and a dual coil (deathmetal to jazz) bridge pickup. It has the widest neck of any electric I have ever played. I play this guitar more than my other electrics combined, but haven't been playing it as much since I bought my accoustics. I play my Taylor 655C jumbo 12-string just about every day. I worship the water it walks on. This is the guitar that I used for my acoustic contributions to _Glass Flesh_. I have a Taylor 812C 6-string that I have a very personal relationship with as well. I am hoping to buy a red 360 V12 Rickenbacker in my adult lifetime. I hope that it is close to how I dream it is (the Rick- not the adult lifetime), and that I may do half what Robyn does with one.
