I've just re-signed up (thanks to my friend, Doug) upon hearing about Robyn's upcoming spate of New England shows! Well, I'll be going to every single one of 'em. And I live just about centrally to all of them, too (Worcester MA if you must know) so if anyone needs a ride or a place to sleep after a show, or if anyone would like to meet and go to the shows together, I'm willing! I'll be taping them all, too, since I always do. If anyone has a video camera, though, that would be really nice! I'm sure some places would allow them... Maybe not Toad's, though they do always tape the shows for themselves. In fact at the Toads show last year (which I also taped if anyone wants a copy) Robyn was joking about being on TV too. Said he felt like the Rolling Stones or something... So let me know! Some of the electric guitars, esp. on IODOT, sound awfully non-Fender to me. Has anyone ever seen him play, say >a Gibson Les Paul or SG I _seriously_ doubt it. See below. Also, I believe Robyn does all his 6-string work on Teles and his 12-string work on a Rickenbacker 360-12 (or maybe it's a 610-12). >Kimberley's axes, right? I have a sneaking suspicion that the SG-playin' guitarist in the pics on the SB's boxed set is Allan Davies. If you listen to the pre-Kimberly mateiral, the lead guitar has a fatter sould than Robyn's (or Kimberly's, for that matter. Listen to the boxed set version of "Give It To The Soft Boys" back-to-back with the "Can Of Bees" version. Completely different guitar sound). That's yer SG. Kimberly, OTHO (and confirmed by the back shot on the back of the box. Look at the headstock) played a Strat, I would bet, 95% of the time. Not only that, but it's identified by the "Claptonesque" tone. Another thing is that, IMO, you can't jangle as well on a Les Paul or SG as you can on a Strat, Tele, or Rickenbacker. This is something I know as being a fact for at least _my_ guitar style anyway, since my roommate owns a Les Paul and he said, "You sound awesome on that Strat, but foolish on my guitar." Someone on here said that they saw the SB's in NYC right after "Underwater Moonlight," and Robyn and Kimberly were playing identical black Tele's. >For some reason, I really like idea/image of Robyn fronting the Soft Boys >with a Gibson Flying-V or a Fender Mustang -- I think he could do a lot >with that sweet sustain those geetars make. But getting back to the jangle thang, Robyn's style just isn't condusive to a humbucking non-Rickenbacker sound. He's got a really trebily tone in his playing that you couldn't get from a Gibson, or even a Mustang or Jazz Master. YMMV, and I wouldn't be suprised to be proven wrong. ---Mike (Proud gear-geek, plays a Strat, owns two of them _and_ a Rickenbacker 610 12-string) ----------------------- "People ask me why I'm obsessed with fish, but it's not true. To: Hitchcock Fan-List Date: Tue, 28 Mar 1995 21:47:42 -0500 (EST) Well, I picked up You & Oblivion today. I'm glad to have it in my possession, but I'm not about to lend it to folks when I do my little Robyn Hitchcock recruitment drives... I think it's an interesting move re-releasing Y&O with Invisible Hitchcock and Eye. I can say without apology that IH is my favorite post-Soft Boys album, bar none, and it's not just because it was the first of the pre-A&M albums I ever heard. It's just that about half of the tunes blow me away. And it means a lot to me personally. I don't care if it was a garage- cleaning album. Oh yeah, and when I first heard it, it still had Grooving... on it, a tune I would love to have on the same disc with The Higsons, by the way. Eye is a good album, too, although I don't listen to it often. It's much too arch and painful. I don't really want to know *that* much about Robyn Hitchcock the man... Some of the songs are excellent. And some of them are too painful for words. I don't want to know what they're "really about". And this brings me back to Y&O. There's enough too-personal stuff on it to make another Eye, and it's a garage-cleaning album like Invisible Hitchcock. In my humble opinion, if albums were high school girls, IH would be the prom queen and Y&O would be her unattractive best friend. And we get a glimpse into what happens when Robyn Hitchcock sits down and doesn't write a gem like Airscape or Raymond Chandler Evening or Glass or even near-pop like If You Were a Priest or All I Wanna Do Is Fall In Love or Madonna of the Wasps or even the much-maligned Balloon Man. I'll make no apologies for Y&O. It's better to know and say 'oh dear' than it is to not know at all. At least this time. I think N. Rob Leas did a good job with his reviews of the tunes, so I won't bore you with mine. But run out and buy this CD. When you're old and dry you'll wish you had. And I guess I'll say that my favorite tracks are Birdshead, because I know it's a nice song, and I've heard it before, and Surgery, because I think it's clever, and Nothing, for reasons I can't identify, and Ghost Ship, because I've wanted to hear the whole thing for about 8 years (ouch!). I'm sure some of the others will sneak up on me and straighten out my spine eventually. Here's hoping Mr Hitchcock has many creative days ahead of him.... I will say two things about You & Oblivion (besides the fact that its a must have): 1- I can understand now why Robyn omitted these songs when compiling Invisible Hitchcock. That album had a certain feel to it, and most of the songs on You & O would've spoiled that feeling. 2- You & O doesn't really have an overall feel to it, aside from the obvious (its all acoustic stuff, no drums). It is definitely a CD to play in shuffle mode, and I look forward to playing it like this until it disintegrates. 3- WHO IS THAT at the end of the last song??? The song ends, and then you hear a child singing "Left hand round/ Oh Belinda/ Left hand round/ Oh Belinda/ Won't you be my partner"--its rather soft, you have to turn it up to hear. I wonder if it is Robyn, or his daughter (actually, doesn't he have two daughters?) Below is an article found in the March 24-31 issue of Philadelphia's "City Paper" Entitled "Ice Pack:The sound of Style" written by a.d. amorosi. Enjoy Rob Z WHAT BECOMES A LEGEND MOST IS ROBYN HITCHCOCK "Is this for a style or flair section? Are you gonna talk about what kind of shoes I wear?" I think I'm scaring the ever fearless Robyn Hitchcock into believing that our conversation will be about pant leg width and coiffure gels. "That'd be most probably very silly, " says Hitchcock on the subject from his London home while preparing supper; for what becomes the Hitchcock legend most isn't his bizarre assortment of polka dotted or cheesy patterned baggy tops, but the fact that he is a complicated modern master of the twisted phrase. Over the course of almost 20 years and a baker's dozen of recorded things, Hitchcock has made mincemeat of any normal thought process, made heroes out of animals and made a legion of fans reel in delight. His insect's view of the world has maintained its whimsy in a business that's normally dictated by a sourpuss' mentality. "It's tough to keep your humor. The easygoing aspect of making music is always there at the very beginning whether you're talking about starting out in 1956 or 1995. Unfortunately, it's always combined with a frenzied egotism and a blind unreal idea of how important you're gonna be. There's a sort of vertigo looking down on your youth, you never know how real it seems or how real you're being taking about the past." Like imagining what you could've done to not lose your hair or gain weight? "Yeah" he smirks, "I shouldn't have rubbed all this hair remover onto my scalp regularly or I could've stood under a waterfall less often." Hitchcock is only looking back because Rhino records is doing it with him. The last two months have seen the Hitchcock back catalog get a kick in the ass from Rhino what with nine discs released, dating back from his post Soft Boys days of 1981 to his pre-90 A&M period. "I'm the one who has to unearth it all so it's not like it was done independently of me," says Hitchcock. >From the delicate sparsity of "I often dream of trains......edited" brief review of records cut... "influences assimilate quite slowly. I think I had a tendency to write songs in a pastiche fashion, in certain styles say a la Lou Reed or John Lennon. I'm quite a good mimic. Being so good at doing pastiches is probably not a good thing. I didn't have a definite sound from the beginning wherein with say R.E.M., they always had an identifiable sound; Stipe always sounded like Stipe. At what point I became 'me' rather than a set of influences I don't know. Probably around mid '80's with Element of Light and Fegmania. End of part one.................................+++++++++++|||||||%%% [][][][][][][][][][] To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Phila City Paper Interview part 2 From: robert.zarzecki@radiowave.com (ROBERT ZARZECKI) Date: Tue, 28 Mar 95 21:53:00 -0500 Part 2 of City Paper interview from Phila City paper March 24-31,1995 written by a.d. amorosi "The Sound Of Style" RH: "Fegmania! had good songs on it even if some were derivative. Element was my first grown up album. I think I went backwards on Globe Of Frogs--back to my pastiche psychedlia. I think since then it's been a;; all me even if it did have bits of other people floating in it" Hitchcock's hair also begins to come into his own--it seems, well, fuller, more stylized. "Yes. I experimented with a series of disastrous hairstyles throughout the '70's and '80's. It's only in the last year that I've come to terms with my hair as it's beginning to go grey." As accorded to all Rhino reissues, it's chock full of unreleased goodies, remixed junk and perhaps a lock or too of Hitchcock's very own doo. "It was quite interesting to go back because there's so many formats or now obsolete formats. When some of this stuff was recorded we were still using stuff like four track quarter inch tape. No digital stuff around on the kind of level we were working on." And which level was that? "That very cheap level. Now these things haved been mixed onto DAT which didn't even exist in 1980. God, it's becoming like translating hieroglyphics in the Grand Pyramid of Cheops onto a typewriter--a strange mixture of media. Hitchock's love of the cheap isn't a kitch thing, but an effective factor in making works that sparkle expensively. Take, for instance, the record "I often dream.." or 91's "Respect." RH: "The concept was to record around the kitchen table but there was very little innocence involved because we had a 24 track mobile unit outside the house and the place teeming with wires and computers. I thought it'd be more like Bob Dylan's basement tapes with The Band. We rehearsed and ate at the kitchen table but that's all that really happened." For Hitchcock's recent tour and a new single out on Seattl'es K Records, he's gone back to the simplicity he's been known for since the days of the Egyptians. "Recording cheaply isn't just cost efficient, but time efficient. I'm not part of the Kate Bush/Bryan Ferry school of lingering in the studio. I like to do things in one and a half takes. I think that a song has an essential feel and you either get that or you don't." This also figures into Hitchcock's lone bullet theory of solo creation. "Working with other people often finds them trying to get the fine tuning right but they very often lose the soul of the song. It's like spending so much time mending the net they scarcely catch any fish in it." "Generally I've found that my achievments have been in inverse proportion to my budget. We did the K tracks in a day in a basement. We did the first two tracks upstairs but had to stop because the other people in his house wanted to make soup in the kitchen." Since Rhino has captured a large chuck of his life so zestily and with great ease, I figure that it must be strange for Hitchcock to imagine himself as an artist who's been doing it since the early '70's, a time not most notable for personal flair. "Twent years," he ponders, "back then, I lokked like some rabling English twee folky thing. I had a beard and long hair like everybody else and sat cross legged. I was a slightly dodgy folk type." Hitchcock then asks me if I've got a mustache. "No," I say. "Why, do you have one?" "No, not a spare but I know where you can get one, " he says, ending our chat. As long as its cheap. But after listening to that solo acoustic Robyn at shows, and on the new rarities CD for almost a year, I'm starting to miss the harmonies!! And the rhythm section! And if I feel that way, I can really relate to Robyn saying it. (Didn't someone say that Robyn mentioned recently in a radio int. that he missed the Egyptians because of the harmonies??) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- John B. Jones e-mail: jojones@mailbox.syr.edu Well, the show will most likely be taped and then edited for the hour long show. So don't expect the show to be broadcast for about another month. I was going to the show, but tickets are $16.50 and $18.50. And being extremely poor... :( There are plenty left though if anybody wants to travel to Greenville, SC. Supposedly only 500 of 2000 have been sold for Saturday's show. Starts at 8pm. Write me if you need directions. oh well, back to lurking... ;) Weirdo - peoples@moe.coe.uga.edu [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 29 Mar 95 12:16:21 CST From: ron_harvey@il.us.swissbank.com (Ron Harvey) To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Re: Robyn ever play Gibsons? I know this because it inspired me to find one for myself (though with a cherry finish). Because 12-strings tend to emphasize the treble ranges, I don't think Robyn's sound suffered much through the humbuckers. But for the most part, yes, the vast majority of his guitar work is on Teles, Strats, and Ricks, single coiled guitars all, usually through two Roland JC-120's and various effects. Well, actually the weekly broadcast of Mountain Stage is 2 hours long. I don't know how close to the actual performance date that it hits the airwaves, but I'd expect sometime in April for an April 1 performance. Robyn's is a well-known, respected, and veteran performer on MS, so he'll probably get a set in both the 1st and 2nd hour. I'd expect his total stage time to be in the neighborhood of 30 minutes. I try to tape this every week and then extract the bits I'm interested in. I'll gladly trade tapes of the show (assuming I successfully tape it) with anyone who's interested. Drop me a line! I had a couple of people ask about the top 10 lists: - first what the votes I've got look like when sorted on album ( how do they rank)...well I don't think this is a real good way to rank the albums, but if the votes for all the songs are added together to get a score for the album the list looks like this: 1 Element of Light (22) 2 IODOT (21) 3 Queen Elvis (19) 4 Fegmania (17) 5 Perspex Island (15) 6 Globe of Frogs (13) 7 Eye (12) 8 BSDR (8) 9 Grovy/Gravy/*.* (7) 10 Invisible Hitchcock, Respect, Kershaw, Hen (6) again I don't think this break down means squat, but some folks wanted to know, and honestly I deleted alot of mail and lost the original requests :) - Once I have my usual machine working (instead of this laptop) I will send out to who ever wants it a complete list of all the votes as they are now...its about three pages long, so be warned if you want it. To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu I got Y&O yesterday. Finally, a new album. It's got some pretty exciting songs, Fiend Before The Shrine, Nothing, Stranded In the Future....and many more. It's also good that it's not a skimpy thirty something minute album like Respect. 22 songs is quite a bit. I also got a free press ticket for the Amherst gig! Does anyone want to trade boots at either the Amherst or Boston shows? Has anyone whose bootleged shows before have any sugestions for what kind of microphone would work best? Omni? Uni? Lavalear?
