It was alright, but pales in comparison to others I've heard/have. This one had no Robynesque patter - just straightforward talk about the Egyptians (like that Andy's chosen to spend more time as a Dad and Hubby than a Bass God (my words, not his) and that he misses the harmonies of the band more than the instrumentation of the band) and the 7" single, but no tales. The version of Queen Elvis is fine but undistinguished. I Something You is a silly song but rather funny at moments. So You Think You're In Love doesn't work that well acoustic & without harmonies. Not a must have except for completists. Alas I missed the main gig as I had to prioritize other shows (heresy!), but I figured Robyn would be less than stellar in only 45 minutes. -j ******** jajasoon tlitteu (jmittell@students.wisc.edu) "You've probably heard that Microsoft has recently taken over the Catholic Church. I will be on my best behavior and expect/desire criticism/feedback directed my way for any transgressions. I have a few questions I would appreciate being answered by those in the know, and a couple short comments. * what radio station in Boston is broadcasting which show? I don't listen to the radio so I miss out on much such information; * when and which Newbury Comics is he appearing at in Boston?; * is there a rift betwixt him and the Egyptians? I know he's done solo tours before and gone back to playing with them; * I've seen him thrice, but never solo; what might I expect?; * I find it interesting to discover another Michael Thompson on the list. How many of those jays share a last name (or a first name beyond a nickname for that matter); * not to be a stick-up sticky beak (python) but if it's the same word I believe it's "sleinte" (pronounced 'slancha'); * off-the-top-of-my-head personal favorites: "Insect Mother", "Heaven", "Queen of Eyes"/"Underwater Moonlight" (always played together), "Out of the Picture", "Acid Bird", "Uncorrected Personality Traits" (I'd never heard it before they did it as an encore the first time I saw them: of course, it was to die), "Leppo and the Jooves" (live, especially), "Insanely Jealous" (this vote wasn't restricted to post- Soft Boys, was it?), well, I have been known to go on ad infinitum/ nauseum, but shan't, further. yours in the palpitating ritual, MT aka Oliver Muxx-Wett [][][][][][][][][][] From: Andy Ruppenstein Date: Sat, 25 Mar 1995 09:02:50 -0800 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Re: The Female Hitchcock (was Re: Considering artistic...) Deni Bonet played violin on a few of the songs on each set including "Arms of Love" and "Never Stop Bleeding" As noted before, his stage shirts are getting more "colorful" these days. The fan shirts were both $15.00. One was black with Robyn's name and picture on the front. The second shirt had a drawing for "Man with a Woman's shadow." For anyone looking to talk to Robyn and never bothering (like I had before) Do It! He's real nice, friendly, did the handshake thing and even signed my Element of Light CD insert (now I can't sell it when I get the reissue) I asked what he would be playing and he said ": what do you want to hear" Wow! Not to pester him I did not ask for anything (OK, Zipper in my Spine ) because I rather he play what he wants, and judging by the 2 almost different sets, he did. The chat was comfortable, about the K records single, Maxwell's in Hoboken, Duplicate signatures, and that was it. A very nice guy. He walked on stage with a cigarette lit, asked for an ashtray, made some comments about not wanting it back and stating he never walks on stage with a cigarette. Then he introduced "Satellite" as "I never walk on stage with a cigarette." The openers, Deni Bonet and band played around 5 songs. Jill Sobule was very good and told me her new record will be out in a month. Both her sets were varied and well worth seeing (and taping). I won't give her set away as it is worth seeing without knowing the set. Robyn is scheduled to be on 88.5 WXPN at 1 PM today (March 26) in the Philadelphia area on the World Cafe, which is syndicated. There are 2 shows tonight at 7:00 and 9:30. It's also worth getting dinner reservations to secure a good spot there as it holds only 105 people. There is not to my knowledge a rift per se. Rumor on the list is that the three of them are pursuing/about to pursue varied musical projects, which may or may not include the others. My personal feeling on this matter is that the folks at Rhino only want to put up so much $$ and no more. They are the ones sponsoring the current touring, after all. Rob Leas" <74511.775@compuserve.com> To: Fegmaniax Subject: You and Oblivion brief review Hello everyone... I found an advance promo copy of _Y&O_ in the used bin yesterday and thought some of you might like to know a little more about it. So anyway, here's a few comments from my second listening. If you'd rather find out for yourself, then skip this message. I must say that for the most part, of the tracks I knew, I liked them better in performance for various reasons. You may notice I focus primarily on the music. I think the lyrics best speak for themselves. Most of the tracks are just Robyn & guitar, though I tried to note when there's outside help that stands out. "You've Got" - The guitar's slightly out of tune. The vocal's weaker than when I've seen it performed, as if some of the venom has been drained. I still think it's a pretty good song. "Don't You" - The vocal delivery & melody are reminiscent of "Blues In A". "Birdshead" - has Peter Buck on 12 & Chris Cox on stand-up. The recording quality sounds like a multi-gen dub of a home 4-track that someone forgot set the Dolby correctly; it sounds simultaneously muffled and hissey. It doesn't come close to the Globe tour rendition. "She Reached For a Light" - Is an interesting one-chord song w/ backwards acoustic and bass, several layers of ethereal vocals. "Victorian Squid" - Chords & melody extremely reminiscent of "Beatle Dennis", cool rubbery bass line, a couple of electric guitar tracks, lovely surreal lyrics. "Captain Dry" - The nautical Clean Steve w/ a terrifically stupid sounding distorted electric. "Mr. Rock 'N' Roll" - Spot on. "August Hair" - Very similar to "Autumn Is Your Last Chance" with the arpeggiated descending electric line as if it were recorded circa _Eye_ until it turns it to "Astronomy Domine" lite. Extremely beautiful. "Take Your Knife Out Of My Back" - Sounds like a psycho Dylan ballad with a great electric lead line. "Surgery" - The other end of the yip. Finally on CD. "The Dust" - This is great. Sort of a "Raymond Chandler" bass line from Andy. Maraccas stress the repeating acoustic arpeggio. "Polly On The Shore" - Probably my favourite on the disk, this is a beautiful song. Recorded @ KUSF, check out how R very briefly tries to decide whether or not to stop & tune before going too far into the song (about 4 seconds in). I wish he had, though it does make it sound more like an ancient ballad this way. "Aether" - This sounds to me like he wrote it as the tape rolled. "Fiend Before the Shrine" - I can't say anything about this song. I'm laughing too much. "Nothing" - CC on stand-up again. "Into It" - Incredible beautiful alternating flat 2nd arpeggio that turns into a psychedelic inquisition. Have you got an answer? (w/ Andy on fretless again) "Stranded In the Future" - Ouch. (Check the Lennon bridge...) "Keeping Still" - Odd juxtaposition w/ the previous (lyrically) "September Cones" - I love this song. The bv's clarify the VU influence. "Ghost Ship" - I haven't heard the version from the "Balloon Man" in several years, so I doubt myself when I say I think this is different, though I don't remember the mayonaisse reference (or any of the second verse, for that matter) Anyway, it's not the "Hen" version either. "You & Me" - I wish I could take bets as to whether or not this song existed before he sang it at KUSF. Are there any other songs from this session? Was there an interview? Anyone have it and want to trade? "If I Could Look" - Somewhere between "Bones In the Ground" & "Atom Bowl", better than both, IMHO, though I wish it was longer. Don't miss the rendition of "Oh Belinda"(?)! Who is that? Maizie? ? Cheers.
