What a f*****g rip!<< Luckily for those of us in attendance, there were 500 other bands in town that weekend, and at least a quarter of them playing that night! Not to mention John WH's stellar set... I missed Robyn's encore, though. He seemed sufficiently irritated that I did not think he would be persuaded to return to the stage. Oh well! For those of you who are curious about the festival in general, I would recommend it wholeheartedly. With that many bands to choose from, and so many great venues, and the likelihood of fabulous weather, all in a great little town like Austin, you can't miss! (Many brewpubs, too, though most clubs served primarily Celis Bock.) One of the many SXSW side events was a rather large record show, at which I was delighted to find the Kershaw Sessions CD. I hadn't really heard much about this album (or if I have, I don't remember) so I was stunned by the amount of great material it contained! It was well worth the $21 I spent, so if you can get it for $17.95 (as mentioned in Monday's digest?) do so. Cynthia p.s. There are 19 songs on the Kershaw Sessions...bringing my weekend total up to 30 ;-) [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 22 Mar 95 22:02:22 EWT From: "Jasper, this ones evil" Subject: Robyn is Austin/misunderstandings To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Id only call getting to hear Robyn do 11 songs at South By Southwest a ripoff if you were only there to hear Robyn. It was $15 if you just wanted to get into the UT Union Ballroom, where Robyn played, but John Wesley Harding, Marshall Crenshaw, and Graham Parker, plus opener David Lewis (who was also pretty good) also each played 45 or so minute sets. Or for $35-40 you could have gotten a wristband which would have let you get into all the SXSW events from Thursday to Sunday. A friggin ripoff? Well I guess it would depend on how many people you really wanted to see - but there was a lot from which to choose. Besides, as the other jay (or am I the other jay?) pointed out, if you had been a little more patient than Cynthia and I, Robyn came back and did two electric encores. So thats 13 songs. Ha! Gee, my 9 year old son has already seen Robyn twice, on a school night, even. You have some catch-up to do. The first time I took my son seemed to freak him (Robyn) out. We were in the front row of a small Portland, Or., club and Robyn was staring at the kid for a lot of the concert. The second time I took both my boys (front row for a Vancouver Canada concert). Robyn didn't seem so distracted by the boyz that time. Having seen Robyn a half dozen times, I can honestly say each time is like the first. (although it only lasted about 30-35 minutes. . .including commercials) i did notice that someone at the sxsw show was video taping his appearance (i was in the front row - it was kinda hard to miss), but he was approached by management a few songs into the set and then led away. i wonder what came of it. i noticed the video camera caught robyn's eye, but he didn't address the issue. wonder what his thoughts were. . . . . anyone know anything about this situation? i caught the dallas show as well as the sxsw appearance. ... .. and i'd have to say that the dallas show was better, if just for the fact that it was a more intimate show, and there was more time for between-song banter and the like. the bit about the fruit from the past was particularly great. plus, i am one prized possession richer because of that show - i have an orange plastic dolphin to which robyn affixed his signature, portholes and a door "so they can get in". but, i would never say that the sxsw show was in any way poor. he was great, as is his nature. it seems that not everyone is of the same opinion as me. . . the following is one lee more's review (from this weeks' austin chronicle, reprinted without permission) Robyn Hitchcock participated in last year's SXSW, but fans of his music were left disappointed as his only official performance was in the spoken-word showcase. This year, he was back and playing music, but his solo acoustic set at the UT Ballroom may have left some fans feeling another sort of disappointment. Hitchcock mixed the familiar and the unfamiliar in his set, reaching back to 1986's FEGMANIA! for a beautiful rendition of "I'm Only You," performing a few newer songs from a recently released EP, and ending with an oddly detached performance of "The Yip Song" (introduced as "a song about cancer"). "Oddly detached" might serve to describe the entire set - after all these years, Hitchcock's non-sequitar surrealist patter has begun to seem less like freewheeling inspiration and more like alternative-showbiz schtick. Maybe he was bored, or maybe he just seemed a little lackluster in comparison to John Wesley Harding, whose intense, crowd-pleasing set Hitchcock followed. Maybe he needs to bring the band along next time. anyone else who was present agree? disagree? by the way, i took some photographs at the austin show, but i am a poor photographer. i have some photographs from a dallas show 2 years ago that a friend was kind enough to take. . .. i was several continents away and could not make that show, . . but those pictures capture much better robyn's great gestures and facial contortions (and one of them, i believe, is of him crawling on the stage) and wasn't robyn's spoken-word showcase participation *2* years ago at sxsw? he mentioned on the radio appearance that it had been 2 yaers since he'd been to sxsw (which he called, pretty accurately, "a good schmooze") -efrat [][][][][][][][][][] From: Cynthia Peterson To: Fegmaniax Subject: Re: Considering artistic endeavors Date: Fri, 24 Mar 95 14:21:00 PST If Robyn's daugher ever records anything, then we can start asking questions? The main disappointment was the shortness of the set (most all performers at SXSW get only 45 minutes) and the bad vibe at the end with that electric guitar thing. I think it may be hard for Robyn to really get into a groove knowing that the set will soon be over. Just a theory... >>reaching back to 1986's FEGMANIA! for a beautiful rendition of >>"I'm Only You," Preceded by a short pondering on what gender identification is good for, introduced by "This is a song about cross-dressing" and followed by Queen Elvis. This little segment was indeed beautiful. >>an oddly detached performance of "The Yip Song" "Oddly detached" might serve to describe the entire set... I agree that he seemed a bit detached. I've seen shows where he seemed detached at first, and then gradually came back into contact with the audience. Again, I would say that a 45-minute showcase isn't the best setting for Robyn. Also, every solo accoustic version of the Yip Song I've ever heard has sounded a bit odd to me... >>maybe he just seemed a little lackluster >>in comparison to John Wesley Harding Never lackluster, and not to be compared! Although JWH's show was pretty great. >>Maybe he needs to bring the band along next time. I have to admit that I really miss the Egyptians. I hope their separation doesn't last too long! Cindy P.S. Robyn was also involved in one of the panel discussions at the convention center on Friday. Does anyone know anyone who attended? I can't even remember what the topic was... It would be interesting to hear him speak in that sort of setting, but maybe not worth the $300 conference registration fee! Crenshaw flubbed a line when he saw him...come now is he a feg? Whoever he was, he looked a lot like Stephen Rea! One of the great things about SXSW is that the performers tend to come out and take in all the other acts, so you never know who's going to be in the audience with you. FYI, after John Wesley Harding admonished the crowd not to leave to see other acts that night, but for their own good to stick around and see Robyn, Marshall, and Graham, he and David Lewis were seen in the crowd enjoying the Giant Sand show at the Electric Ballroom... ;-> CP [][][][][][][][][][] From: AMcCon@aol.com Date: Fri, 24 Mar 1995 21:59:22 -0500 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: The Female Hitchcock (was Re: Considering artistic...)
