I don't know if those > shows were really old when EmptyV played them. If they were relativiely > new, then Robyn came first. Actually, they were already rather old when MTV (i like eMpTyV, BTW) first ran them. "The Young Ones" were made back in 1984 (or 1985?) and have been replay- ed at various times in the States. Lucky for us video archivists, Comedy Central (cable channel) has finally had the good taste to rerun them again, Saturdays at 11 pm, if yer interested. Too bad Robyn was never a "musical guest" in the YO living room. He would have fit in so well with the manic absurdity of the show, and they had other bands (Madness, The Damned, Motorhead etc) of the same general level of fame, so why not? Anyway, as far as "Mellow Together" goes, I have always thought of Neil (Nigel planer) as the inspiration for that song as well. Even if we're wrong, it's pretty obvious that Robyn and Nigel are both playing off an absurdly exaggerated hippie figure. -ed. I know that at least three of _my_ favs would be Soft Boys tunes, and I think Bayard would agree if he were on the same contenant as his computer. How 'bout this... On Loud-Fans, we divided it up into four parts, Favorite Alternate Learning tunes, favorite Game Theory tunes, favorite Loud Family tunes, and favorite albums. We could divide Robyn into Albums, SB's and RH/RH&E's lists, _or_ albums, SB's, RH (solo, which would obviously include the two acoustic albums) and RH&E's. There's enough of a difference between each of the song lists to warrent it, and enough material, too. Hell, we voted on 10 Loud Family songs based on two albums! Personally, I think that to exclude a body of work as brillant as the SB's catalog would be a mistake. ---Mike ----------------------- "People ask me why I'm obsessed with fish, but it's not true. You might also try the one and only Rockpile album SECONDS OF PLEASURE. Rockpile was Dave Edmunds' and Nick Lowe's band -- they would play on each other's albums in the late seventies but couldn't record under the name Rockpile for weird contractual reasons. When the legal problems were resolved, they issued SECONDS, escalated their feuding and promptly broke up. Getting back to Nick Lowe, I'd stay away from some of his mid-80s releases which were -- for want of a better term -- bad. He also has a fairly decent Greatest Hits album if you're into that. A few notes. Re the cover tape: As somebody tentatively guessed, Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) is from _Street Legal_, not from _Under the Blood Red Sky_ as somebody else guessed. _SL_ is from 1978. It's the last Dylan album before his Jesus trilogy. The song is indeed also on the _Biograph_ compilation. I think "Arms Around the Rainbow" is by the Incredible String Band, but I only think that because I read it in the old Fegmaniax... I think. Someone who saved all the back issues might be able to search for "Arms" and confirm it. At any rate, I know Robyn has done live versions of ISB songs. Most are written by Robin Williamson, about who RH has spoken highly many times. They are on my list of subjects for further investigation. As several folks pointed out the Roxy Music song is "Take A Chance WITH Me." "Take a Chance ON Me" is the ABBA song. Re Matthew Sweet: As a power pop buff I gotta stick up for _Girlfriend_, and to a lesser extent, _Dinosaur Act_. The former is just about perfect as far as I'm concerned. The latter also has some fine stuff. The guitar work by Richard Lloyd and Ivan Julian and even Sweet is pretty amazing. Admittedly, his live shows are not as great. Saw him once with IJ but it went out live for a radio station which shortened the set and crimped the mood. He was kinda jerky but I attributed it to the radio thing. Also saw him open for Robyn at a point where he had probably sold a lot more CDs than RH. Again he was kind of a jerk. But if I didn't like music by musicians who act like assholes I'd have to throw out half my record collection! Looking forward to the live show in Cleveland April 13! Re: Reissues It's shrewd or cynical, I think, to add "Higsons" to Invisible Hitchcock. I have looked for this single for years unsuccessfully. It's probably the only possible song they could have added to IH to make me upgrade from the old CD, which I don't much care for. Oh well. Date: 3/17/95 One of my best friends went to SXSW. I made her promise me that she would see a performance of Robyn. This story is second hand from two consecutive messages- she ran out of time on the first- that she left on my phone mail at work late last night after she saw the Hitchman. She was rather out of breath she was so excited (and she had only heard a couple of his tunes prior to this). She called a place called Dave's Bar(?) after noticing in a local Hey-what's-happenin'-in-town kind of paper that he was playing there last night. They told her to come on down since it wasn't sold out- and that she should come early. Robyn came out and said something like, "I'm just starting my tour, and I'd like all of your suggestions for my song list," to those standing in line outside. As she'd heard the Mark version of LTtHigsons and the Dave and Mark version of OLPofEyes, she suggested those. The line seemed rather short, and when she got inside, she was amazed at what a tiny place it was. She said that no one in the place was more than four tables away from the stage, and that she got to sit less than ten feet away from him. She said that she wished that I could have been there, because Robyn was really _on_ (I've only seen him once when he wasn't "_on_", and that was about the best concert I saw that year). She said he played a one-hour acoustic set and then a one-hour electric set. She said he was a complete nut. He must have done some of his usual brilliant, imaginative, stream-of-conciousness prose. I hope Robyn makes it back to the west coast on his tour this year- I'm going into withdrawl. I'm glad I'm picking up his rereleased CD catalog- that will take care of me for a little while I wait to see him again. It was at the Perspex show in Portland, Oregon, and my sister and I were suffering (politely) through the Sweet set (at the front, of course) while anxiously awaiting Robyn. After they finished, Sweet and his guitarist (bassist, whoever) came out into the audience and started pestering me and my sister, trying to get us to attend some "party" they were having after the show. We declined (not so politely) several times, and they were pretty beligerent. Later, they had the nerve to come back, (during Robyn's set!!) having rethought their strategy, and shoved a note in my pocket with some lame address on it and said "you guys should come, youknow, like, Robyn will be there.." (Bear in mind, this was all happening two feet in front of R. during Ultraunbelievable Love which made it particularly mortifying for us). Not having been born yesterday, we decided to pass on the invitation. I came to find out later that Robyn's father had died that night; casting further doubt that he was at the "party". Sorry this is so long, being my first posting and all, but it feels good to have gotten it off my chest in a forum where someone could relate.
