I don't know if his tunes have made it onto any CDs or not, but here's what you'll get of his if you get the whole show, both nights: First night (April 14, 1991) Sometimes I Wish I Was A Pretty Girl Birds in Perspex Balloon Man So You Think You're In Love he also sits in on You Ain't Going Nowhere during the encore, primarily because he seems to be the only one who knows all the words... Second night (April 15, 1991) Oceanside Ultra-Unbelievable Love Birdshead Queen of Eyes encore: Listening To The Higsons You Ain't Going Nowhere He & the Egyptians sound *good*. I believe Peter Buck sits in on several songs. Unlike a lot of these acoustic/unplugged/intimate thingies, they actually seem to be having fun. I've had a bit of trouble sending messages lately through the slobber encrusted doors of our gateway to the cyberanything. I'll try this again... >the last thing is that i was wondering if any of the UK's list members might >know why it is that robyn doesn't seem terribly popular there... the only >thing i could think of was this speech that Vyv gives in the "Young Ones" >(coming back to comedy central on 11 march) about felicity kendall (sp?)... >he says that he hates that show, (neighbours?) because it gives the bloody >impression that everyone in england is a lovable middle-class eccentric..... > which is not the case, to hear Vyv shout it..... Since I am not A UK list member, I may be typing out of turn, but I have read a great deal about this in the music trades. Robert Fripp, Morrissey, Brian Eno, Brian Ferry, and I think I remember even Robyn have said in interviews I've read how cruel the British press is to acts from the UK. The general consensus is that someone like these bands/people may have a successful (profitable) yet cultish status here in the USA and in other parts of the world, have devoted fans, and continue to get good press and airplay anywhere but at home. All of them were frustrated that only if they reached the popularity, financial success, and longevity of the Beatles and the Stones would they actually be embraced by the home press and get airplay at there. They can't seem to get enough of us dull-witted yanks though. This may be good for me, as my next carreer I hope to be in music. I hope I'm just dull-witted enough for their tastes and no more. Perhaps they will think this wacky eccentric is cool because I'm from cowboyland. Since I live 40 miles away from Carmel, they may wonder if I know Clint Eastwood. I can honestly say that while I was in Britain, I did not hear one song on any radio station that I liked. I don't even think I'm terribly picky. I thought that just about everything I heard sounded like horrid 'muricun swill pop that rots teeth, and causes severe I.Q. reduction, Newt, and glaciers to form over the minds of otherwise nice folk. I actually did hear a few of those unforgettable (damn!) american '70's "freedom rock" tunes that had made their way back up the charts, supplanting fresh, interesting, and probably local music that had some right to being there (except whatever rules they had against freshness and interestingness). I occasionally get to hear a show from London that plays "what's new in the UK" on a modern rock station here, and much of the stuff is pretty good, but I sure didn't hear anything that good when I was there. Maybe I was just fiddling with the wrong side of the radio while I drove the car on the wrong side of the road into the wrong side of the ditch. The brits I have met that I liked were all lovable eccentrics. This makes their cultural rigidity resolve itself better than, say the vice-like sphincterfaces that Margaret T. and John M. broadcast. And all that before you even take into account the royalty. RH, Adrian Legg, Robin Williamson are all delightful whether talking, playing, and/or singing. My little bit that I am doing for _Glass Flesh_ that I'm really happy with is not accurate to what RH does on "Listening to the Higsons", but I really like playing it this way on an acoustic (it doesn't sound as good played with these voicings on an electric with mass quantities of distortion): Substitute the barred F# with: (F# open thingamajiggerdoohickeymabob- I haven't taken the time to figger out what this chord is called) 0 0 3 4 4 2 (like a barred F#[or E moved up two frets], only without the barre,) (E, boring old E open position) 0 0 1 2 2 0 Substitute the barred B with: (B open thingamajiggerdoohickeymabob) 0 4 4 4 0 x (like a barred B, only without the barre and the root) These are the only chords I play in the song. This really impresses people when I play it on my twelve string- a little less with my six, but it's less intimidating- I can't hurt them as much with it. I do these kinds of chord substitutions as part of my schtick to make people think of my playing as being better than it really is. I also let the heel of my strumming hand lightly beat on the bridge as I play to give the songs some sense of immediacy and rhythm. That's most of my guitar secrets, all distributed within one three-chord song. wo-o wo -Mark Gloster "The D.P Gumby of guitar" mark_gloster@quickmail.apple.com [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 06 Mar 1995 21:08:54 -0500 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu From: pmcohen@netaxs.com (Paul Cohen) Subject: Re: Kiss the messenger! >> And unless I'm mistaken, Polly on the Shore was the title of a Tangerine >> Dream album several years ago. As further evidence of the brain-dead critical establishment of that blessed isle, consider Q Magazine's review of the reissues of A Can Of Bees, Invisible Hits, and Underwater Moonlight. They got two stars ("recommended only if you like this band"), two stars, and three stars ("recommended if you're into this genre") respectively. THREE STARS for the best album of the British 80's "new wave"?! And Invisible Hits, while not as good as Underwater Moonlight, is jam-packed with great songs well-played. Meanwhile, the same magazine regularly gave four and five stars to bands like the Happy Mondays and The Fall -- neither of whom were ever as tuneful, innovative in the field of rock music, lyrically creative, and catchy as Robyn 'n' the Boys on their worst days. - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu [][][][][][][][][][] Date: 06 Mar 95 22:13:23 EST From: Benjamin.M.Brainard@dartmouth.edu (Benjamin M. It is especially evident on eye. in beautiful girl, it's not just any E chord he's playing, he's playing it at the 7th fret, and he's only fingering three notes, the E on the third string, the B on the fourth string (both 9th fret), and the E on the fifth string (7th fret). He plays the rest open, and it's a much bigger sound than playing just a plain first position E chord. same thing with the B chord that comes next; he plays the lower four strings and removes the barre and plays the upper two open. much nicer sound. a long time ago i posted some chords and descriptions to that and queen elvis...did anyone happen to save those? otherwise i'll see if i can resurrect them. of course it is finals week here, so i'm sure i'll have a lot of time to be transcribing things. finals, btw, is why i haven't gotten a chance to write back to those of you who wrote me about trades...stay tuned, as procrastination sets in, the 'clean mailbox' response kicks into high gear. unga unga, ...ben [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 06 Mar 1995 21:18:19 -0600 (CST) From: "Dolph Chaney, vox/gtr, PORT RADIUM" Subject: Re: the higsons beginner tab To: Mark_Gloster@quickmail.apple.com Cc: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Mark, Sorry everyone -- I messed up that last message. Apparently the gig was being DATd by someone associated with Mrs. Wafflehead (Todd can elaborate on this) for possible release through the fan club. I certainly hope so. This was one of the most lingering performances I've ever been to. I couldn't fall asleep until 4.30am; My mind kept running the songs over and over again. It was well worth the travel. T-shirts: two new designs were available. A colour cartoon on white for Man With A Woman's Shadow; and a white-on-black print of the promo photo of Robyn with a very big smile. I imagine that if one hasn't heard his music before, he appears quite a friendly guy. The photo shirts had the Dingwalls date printed on them, so I don't imagine these will surface elsewhere. Hair: This was by far the best I've seen Robyn's hair looking. He's wearing it longer, with the top part of it mid-cheek. It suits him much better than that chopped off on top style of the A&M days. (Unless that's his touring style and he'll turn up with it chopped off again when the US tour starts.) Beer: Robyn was drinking Perrier on stage. Earrings: Well, no. Robyn wasn't wearing any. But Martin Carthy had two rings in one of his ears! It was a joy to see him play live. Unfortunately, I only recognised a couple of his songs, and I'm not aware of their titles. Again, the gig was well worth the travel. By all means, don't miss the upcoming tour if you have the chance to go!
