Cleese, the eldest, went there first and established the sort of wacky sense of humor that prevailed there, along with the recently (and sadly) late Peter Cook. At the same time, Michael Palin and Terry Jones were attending Oxford. Terry Gilliam was still in America, attending Occidental College in California. He, like Terry Jones at Oxford, was something of a BMOC (there are great pictures of Gilliam in those days with a crewcut!). All of them would have been graduates by 1965 or so, I think, so they would have predated Robyn by quite a while. John Cleese is 14 years older than Robyn Hitchcock. His second release, 1982's more-rounded Groovy Decay is for the first time presented back to back with its sister album, the remixed/remodelled Groovy Decoy (1985) and features the Beatlesque charm of the Rain, the new wave wonder of "When I Was A Kid" and the demented "Grooving on an Inner Plane" and "Night Ride to Trinidad" (two versions here, as with many tracks). 1984's I Often Dream of Trains (largely Hitchcock unplugged, accompanied mainly by piano or acoustic guitar) is a difficult one for the uninitiated, particularly the more challenging melodies and rhymes of "Furry Green Atom Bowl," although the sweetly nostalgic "Trams of Old London" and the near-classic "Uncorrected Personality Traits" still respectively warm the cockles and raise a smirk. It shows up on the unspeakably great Mark Radcliffe BBC tape (11/15/93) -- now there's a set of songs that someone should compile and release officially!
